BTW, the article says: "Some 55% of Syrians want Assad to stay, motivated by fear of civil war"

The majority still did want him to stay, and this article is from January.

Ben, what bothers me infinitely more is that the same superpowers are killing millions in other countries. I and many others caught on long ago. You and many others continue to pretend this is not the case. The article also explains where the "rebels" get their weapons and assistance. The best way it seems to stop the killing is for the foreign intervention to stop.

What the article clearly says is that 55% (not 80%) are afraid of a civil war.

If you take this a step further, you should realize that this also proves that the majority of Syrians do not support the rebels.

I think YGHome3 recently summarized this whole conflict very nicely:

"This is a superpower intervening in a foreign country (and mobilizing local people to further its objectives)."

I hope Assad can clean this mess quickly.

Well, it does appear that a few months ago, 55% of Syrians wanted Assad to stay. After having witnessed the brutality of the so-called rebels, I suspect the percentage would be significantly higher today. I would not at all be surprised if it was around 80%, as Chuck stated a couple of weeks ago.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jan/17/syrians-support-assad-western-propaganda

The article also mentions foreign assistance and other stuff that is ignored in most western "media".

Indeed, about a week ago, as the rebels were approaching Damascus, RT News was showing families having picnics in the city. Lets hope Assad can quickly eliminate these thugs so that the killing stops and life returns to normal.

Behind all this might be a desire to get rid of the US military all together. I think its about time to end this occupation. Japan should take care of itself.

"On April 22 of this year a convicted felon, just out of jail, went to an Aurora, Colorado, church and shot and killed a member of the congregation before being killed himself by a congregant carrying a gun."

    http://thenewamerican.com/usnews/crime/item/12175-two-aurora-shootings-one-widely-known-the-other-ignored

Just imagine if that congregant happened to be in the theater during the shooting. Maybe the cinema shooting would be as unknown to the world as the April 22nd church shooting.

Banning guns won't work. Those who want to kill will find a way to get a gun illegally, or find another way to kill. There are many ways to kill people, but I don't want to give a nutcase any ideas...

America will be pulling out with the their tails between their legs, as did Alexander the Great, Britain and the USSR.

Indeed. But the goal of war is not always to win. Many times the main purpose is to make a few people much richer.

Who's advising Mitty in foreign affairs? Neocons for sure.

Yep, Mit is surrounding himself with the same people Bush had. And Obama is basically continuing Bush's foreign policies. So we shouldn't expect anything to change either way. Unless, Ron Paul manages to win the upcoming convention, in which case he would likely win the presidency.

If NATO had any sense whatsoever they'd cut off the flow of weapons and ammo immediately, let the Syrian authorities arrest these roaming jihadist gangs and then deal with Syria diplomatically.

Oh I think they have lots of sense, they know what they are doing. I guess what you meant was "If NATO had any decency ..."

By coincidence, on this very page I now see an advert showing Hillary smiling and waving, with the UN logo in the background, with the heading Hillary Welcomes Global Gun Ban. Considering she is behind the arming of these murderous thugs (albeit probably indirectly)...

He specfically talks about talking to rather low level people in the Pentagon. What are the names of the influential advisors you are referring to?

Paul Wolfowitz; check the link, you might also want to look at the second video.

Anyway, your claim that you have been making for quite some time now appears completely mistaken as the video was done in 2007 and most of those countries you claimed would be attacked during the five years since that time have not been attacked.

My claim is correct, General Wesley Clark did say those things. The US had such plans. Clark learned of such plans in 1991, and then again soon after 911. Just because they did not succeed in regime-changing all 7 countries in 5 years does not mean that there was no such plan; those behind this plan are evil but they are not the world's brightest.

Ah, Chuck, yes. He linked one halfway decent report (the rest were completely bias blogs) ...

I suspect they are "biased" because they disagree with your views

... that also reported that the long-term exiles were sincere Syrians in trying to change Syria's government.

Yeah, you made that claim before, and I still can't figure how you get that interpretation from the following sentence from that article: "It's important to stress: to investigate the background of a Syrian spokesperson is not to doubt the sincerity of his or her opposition to Assad. But a passionate hatred of the Assad regime is no guarantee of independence."

Anyway, from the list of 7 countries (Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, and Iran) which were to be invaded and blessed with regime change, Syria is one of the few remaining, and then Lebanon (they tried and failed in 2006) and then finally Iran.

Clark admits he was just repeating what some people opinions were in the Pentagon.

Some people? Riiight. They happen to be very influential advisors to the president. And your not at all bothered by the fact that all the countries listed by some Pentagon guy just happened to have undergone (by force) either regime change or attempted regime change.

That does not mean they wanted to do it themselves.

Obviously, after the huge messes they created in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya the American people (most of them) would never accept the US to openly attack Syria. That is why they do it indirectly; Chuck referred to a report describing how "a number of key figures in the Syrian opposition movement are long-term exiles who were receiving US government funding to undermine the Assad government long before the Arab spring broke out." Hillary stated that the US continue to provide assistance to the rebels. And leftover weapons from the Iraq invasion is covertly trickling down to Syria.

What were the refugees running from

Good question. There are countless reports, even in the western mainstream media, of people escaping Syria for fear of the so-called rebels. I think Never Submit might have provided a link to one such report. The rebels are the ones who have committed the most barbaric attacks in Syria over the past year, not the Syrian army.

    Good comments above!

America has captured a piece of territory at the southern end of the country. Most of the indigenous inhabitants of this piece of territory have been banished, and western settlers are taking their place.

I just want to add that Syria and groups like Hezbollah (possibly with the help of Iran) are the only things preventing "America" from expanding further.

with regime forces shelling several neighbourhoods,

Are the neighborhoods empty, full of civilians or full or rebels. Why is that not clarified?

I guess you and I both know, but many others don't, that this is not clarified because we are meant to believe that the Syrian military is killing innocent civilians. The same can be said about the alleged total body count, we are expected to believe that they were all killed by the Syrian military, rather than by the so-called rebels.

"The US has been planning for over a decade to carry out regime change in a number of ME countries"

Gee, look how you can make up a whole load of rubbish when you have no intention of substantiating it!

Madverts, you can see a video where General Clark himself explains a plan the US had as early as 1991 for seven countries (Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, and Iran) which were to be invaded and blessed with regime change.

    http://www.docudharma.com/diary/28484/general-wesley-clark-7-countries-in-5-years

Notice how all of those countries have undergone (by force) either regime change or attempted regime change.

    Madverts,

This is not a popular uprising; the majority of Syrians oppose this "uprising"

The US has been planning for over a decade to carry out regime change in a number of ME countries, including Syria. Check out Wesley Clark's video where you can hear him explain this. Hillary has admitted assisting the so-called rebels.

The intentions of countries like Saudi Arabia who are heavily financing the "rebels" are not to spread democracy; they are less democratic and more ruthless than Syria.

The "rebels" are murderous thugs, who do not care about the general Syrian population, they run around murdering Syrian forces and innocent civilians.

    Madverts,

Obama, Cameron, NATO et al have been intervening; they STARTED this mess. They are the ones who have been financing, arming, and assisting these killers.

It's a bit like the French Revolution, with a loose association of opposition against the old regime.

Except that in this case, this "loose association of opposition" is heavily funded. armed, and directly assisted by the US, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Turkey, NATO, ...., some of which have older and more ruthless regimes than Syria.

I could see this coming because the US has made it clear for many years that they want regime change in Syria.

But with the US and her friends focusing on Iran, and talking about all options being on the table, it just doesn't make sense for Iran to kill a few Israeli tourists in Bulgaria. To me, it is so much less likely that Iran is behind it than Israel itself; truth be told, Israel has caused this kind of thing before to its own people to further its agenda.

And I've been hearing things about the bomber being from Sweden, holding a fake US driver's license, and having spent 2 years at Gitmo (tortured?); what is the connection with Iran.

Anyway, Bibi and Barak should provide their evidence or shut up; or at the very least the media should ignore them until they do. Most people will read/hear the headline, and possibly skim through the article and assume that Iran is behind it, without realizing that these accusations are completely baseless.

Spain, etc..are really getting whacked by so many economic problems, do hope they can get their economy back on their feet and that these guys get some clothes??

Yeah, the only way they can do this is by following Iceland's example. Notice how Iceland is no longer in the news; some people don't want us to know about the option they followed.
