The only "spate" going on is that of sensationalized saturation coverage by Japanese TV news agency of anything remotely lurid. This practice seems modeled after the 24/7 entertainment produced by CNN (whose producers mislabel as "news"). It is immensely profitable. It has all the predictable results.

As Japan is one of the safest countries in the world (and the crime rate is shrinking, regardless of what the saturation coverage-likely modeled on western TV news-style reporting, such as on CNN and Fox news-of rare and dramatic incidents implies), I wonder if those on this thread blaming "culture"…
