Clubs in Okinawa are going to suffer from this. pfft.

Not necessarily, many non-military don't go to bars/clubs or leave them early because of military people being there. Their customers might change, but that doesn't mean they'll suffer.

If Okinawa truly wanted to get rid of the US military it would grow a pair and wean itself from its dependency on (and antipathy toward) the central government and its American overlords. The current direction of this protest movement is pathetic.

Okinawa has a pair, it wants the US military gone but no one listens, it only gets 4% of its income from the bases (but yet they use 20% of the land area on the island). Unless Okinawa becomes its own country it will continue to be under American and Japanese thumbs. If Japan wants to be defended by Americans, it should step up and host the bases where nipponjin live, rather than hosting the bases in territories where the Americans are unwanted.

These dorks better not be flying over Tokyo, one of the most populated cities on the face of the earth! The stupid helicopters already flying back and forth between Yokota and other bases here in the Kanto Plain are already loud enough, let alone having one of these wierd contraptions, Ospreys fall into a ball of fire over Tokyo!

Considering the population density of Ginowan (the city with the air base right in the middle of it) is nearly the same as Tokyo (Naha which is also close to the base is more dense than tokyo) it seems the Japanese government really only cares about flying over parts of the country with populations of Nipponjin, but could really care less about the Okinawans.

Maybe if it crashes into the PM on his next visit to Okinawa the mainland will finally start to listen.

Hopefully the Conservative government will start to regret scrapping the gun registration programme.

The quake also brought down a portion of the wall of Katsuren Castle, one of the 9 UNESCO sites on the island.

3 million misleading articles written by amateurs and full of errors, not to mention liberal bias. No thanks.

Actually the BBC recently ran an article about how wikipedia is actually more accurate than the Encyclopedia Britannica. As for liberal bias, I suppose that since it is written "by the people" it must mean that the people are liberal.

There definitely needs to be a new system to protect the accused. Two friends of mine just spent 22 days in Japanese jail and luckily were found innocent. I cannot imagine what it would be like for this guy to be stuck in jail and be innocent. But overall any country with a death penalty should not have a guilty until proven innocent policy. I mean just look at the case of Sakae Menda.

Okinawa is the only place where Japanese people can speak a smattering of English. Now they won't even have that.

News to me, after flying in from an international flight I was surprised that they could only tell me what I needed to do to go through customs in Japanese. English in Okinawa is a rarity.

I wouldn't say most, but there are quite a few places here that foreigners are not allowed, unless they bring a Japanese gaijinsitter.

it doesn't look that bad, and considering it is our only viable form of public transportation i'll take it.

We have to listen to these same-sex homosexual couples crying for this and demanding that and yet normal partners are neglected. Why do homosexual couples have to get married anyway ? Why all the attention ? Why can't they just live together and get on with their lives without needing all this recognition from hetrosexual people.

Northlondon, you are very ignorant of the issue. It is not that homosexuals are wanting special recognition or special treatment by heterosexuals. Nor are they wanting more rights than heterosexual couples. Homosexual couples are wanting the same rights as heterosexual couples and to be treated equally under the law. They could very well just live together and get on with their lives, but if one of them were to go into the hospital the other wouldn't be allowed to see them, or if one were to die, the other may not be able to inherit his or her property.

If the Japanese were whaling within their own waters that would be a Japanese affair, but the fact that they are not in Japanese waters and also are a part of the treaty protecting the whales makes this a global issue. Also the fact that they are part of the treaty meant to protect the whales makes it very hypocritical on their part. For being known as such a "green" and "sustainable" culture, it is strange that the Japanese seem so bent on harvesting endangered species.

Well, since the decorated tree and wreaths and most of the other "Christmas" decorations have absolutely nothing to do with Christ, but instead have been stolen from the Yule holiday. I don't see why are called "Christmas" decorations at all. Christians are entitled to celebrate the birth of Christ, just as those who celebrate Hanukkah are entitled to celebrate the oil miracle. But as to why Christians seem so defensive about Yule trees no longer being called Christmas trees, part of me is confused as to how they ever got that term in the first place.

However I do home that those who celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or Yule don't start seeing Christnoras, Christnaras, or heaven forbid Christ logs!
