"not only is it maligned in Japan but it is next to useless outside of Japan." You are saying that ESL teaching is useless outside of Japan? I must be misunderstanding because that is just ridiculous, so I am sure thats not what you were saying.

How many teachers did you have growing up that were "good at what they do?". Or doctors? or car mechanics? or waiters? in my life, its always been 50-50. Win some-lose some. Some are good, some suck in all walks and at all education levels...even friendships. Thats life, not divided down to a single profession.

Do you get money if you win? or just a trophy? "Worlds biggest pig"? I thought these kinds of contests were for children at travelling carnivals.

btw- many many many authentically certified English teachers dont work at "English conversation schools." Especially "long termers" who have had the intelligence to open small schools with very succesful classes or immersion programs that have an extremely satisfied and loyal student body. I think what is "maligned" is the exploitation of English by the Japanese companies and the young foreigners that serve as cogs in their mismanaged machines.

The same reason anything is trashed by anonymous online posters- ignorance. Your personal experience is one in 10 thousand a year. It is not enough inforation to make an informed opinion. Neither is mine. It is not a "maligned profeesion" to the millions of Japanese who want to study and practice the language,

There is nothing immoral about porn. Its the worlds oldest profession. where would millions of married men be without porn? cheating, thats where! I agree that J chicks are beautiful in porn and look like everyday girls but the dudes in porn need some serious lessons and steroids, but who the hell is watching the dudes anyways? Half the time their faces are blurred. They can blur the dudes out completely as far as I am concerned.

In all honesty, its only maybe 10 percent teacher input to 90 percent student output. The only way to really learn a language is immersion and practice. Teachers are only the guide and shouldnt be the conversation partner, other students should be. Your English is only as good as the amount of effort you give to practice and use it. Bottom Line.

Is this supposed to be funny? Confessions of a lazy foreigner? if this is the status quo of foreign attitude and self discipline in Japan, no wonder all the old men glare at me on the train. I dont think studying martial arts in Japan is cliche at all, considering .00000001 percent of the population of any foreign country actually does it (and I am not one of them). I applaud anyone taking any class in this country and I roll my eyes at anyone that quits becuase of sloth.

HesKun- simple way to fix the situation-lie!Say you moved to the States when you were 6 months old... or perhaps get a teaching certification for English as a foreign language. BTW, why in the world do you want to be an English teacher if you are fluent in Japanese and hold a Masters in Japanese Culture?

This question is nonsense. Which "English Schools"? What fluency level of English? Language lessons or skills lessons? Learning a level one foreign language is like joining a gym. Where are you now in your training and what are the results you want? After answering those questions there are 20 different ways to get the results you are looking for. Also, as the world globalizes and English is being used more and more, it is becoming harder to define what constitutes "Native" level. I have met "non" native speakers with a better grasp on English than many of my Southern USA "native" speakers. And just because you speak English at a native fluency level doesnt mean you know a thing about how to "teach" it to someone else.

What if youre not fat? what if you are American NBA size? super tall? or what if you are a pro wrestler or bodybuilder? Does the same discrimination apply? Where does it stop? what if a person is stinky or dirty? what if a person has too many tatoos? what if a person ......??
