p.s. if you follow that river North up to Kamigamo, there is a beautiful, large outdoor shrine called Kamigamo jinja and you can picnic, put your feet in a brooke, walk up the hillside to a nice wooded shrine and the inside shrine is beautiful and huge. Its where they do the horse riding/archery every year. Anyway its easily accessible by subway or you can ride your bike or hike up the river. Just stay left when the river forks! At the very end of the city limits to the north is a waterfall and swimming hole in clean mountain Kamogawa water! people swim and bar b cue there all summer. Its a nice river, but by the time it reaches Chushojima after traveling through the city and past the Sake factories, the water is brown and Diiiiirty!

I lived there for almost 5 years. It was a very crowded place on weekends and in summertime. Its the only real night life in Kyoto and it spans about a 2 square block radius from Karasuma to the river and Shijo to sanjo and a little beyond both North and South. The Hostesses on Kiiamachi are beautiful and friendly outside their clubs. Gion offers some nightlife as well but many of its bars are members only and its a bit more spread out and exclusive. Kyoto is a nice place to visit but I find life much more suitable for my tastes in Osaka and Kobe.

I am with the old lady on this one. What is the point of assigning priority seats if NOBODY enforces it?. In fact NOBODY enforces ANY rule or law in this country. If I was a national, you bet your a** I would fight for whats right. I would beat every punk a** androgynous, underpants showing, bad 80s mullet wearing, 1000decibal scooter driving, 45 kilogram high school dip sh** in this country with an umbrella.

Side"walks" are just that. People should not have to look over their shoulder when walking on a sidewalk. If it is a designated bicycle lane, then walkers should stay out. In the traffic laws, pedestrians have the right of way and if a sidewalk is congested, the cyclist needs to get off the bike and walk until the area clears. They do NOT need to yeild to a bell. A bell is a nuisance and should be used only to avoid a sudden danger or a collision. It is NOT there to tell walkers to get out of the way.

Japan needs to open the door on the mental illness problem and make help more accessible BEFORE people slide into insanity. This is just a sympton of the declination of a culture/country. Wake up and make some changes.

Whats the big deal? i have never met a foreigner who didnt have a gf/bf/friend/spouse who couldnt translate for them. All it takes is 5 minutes for any japanese person to get comfortable enough to start tryng to use a little English and look you in the eye anyways. Most Japanese people like the opportunity to try some English especially if there is a translator with you. And if you dont have a gf/bf/friend/spouse to translate for you then you need to get off your computer and get out of the house.

Also, the interest rate on houses is at like 1.8 percent. Whch is crazy low when compared to the States. I found an old style house from the 70s on the beach with one owner. Those houses were built solid. I dont know about the kit houses that go up in about a week these days, but the house I bought survived the Hanshin earthquake without a crack. I only had to put 50 man down and the mortgage payments are like 4 man a month for 17 years. Now i spend the weekends there painting the inside and putting carpet down, etc. etc. It is pretty awesome. For all freigners who plan on staying , I highly recommend wandering into the local Century 21 and seeing what they can do. Even for just a weekend home or a sublet. Its too cheap to pass up and the loan bank loan wasnt as strict as youd think if youve had a solid job, health insurance and a japanese spouse.

I dont live in or near Tokyo, but when I was visiting, I could take my backpack off (younger days) standing up on a crowded train, and it wouldnt fall to the ground. in fact, it wouldnt move at all. So how can you AVOID touching someone in those conditions?

and is it really good news reporting to call him a "falsely accused groper" when we dont actually KNOW if he did or did not grope the woman? Therefore, the word "accused" alone should suffice in all honesty.
