hehe, flammenwerfer, I suppose we're saying real-life mashups are okay, whether disclosed or not? Maybe that's how alter-reality we regard our media now. It no longer matters if what our eyes are showing us are real, because we use TV to get away from life, not to draw into it. That could explain a lot about American political behavior the last eight years...

This reporting that the cute singer's voice wasn't good enough is the reverse of the way it has been reported, i.e. that the singer's face wasn't cute enough. Either way, I'm surprised this story found the light of day. Re-education for a certain music director, perhaps?

Vince Carter's dunk was possibly the greatest basketball play of all time. LeBron's blocks on Angola, et. al have been amazing. Although US-style play is generally rougher than international ball, intimidation and physicality are important parts of elite basketball anywhere. Greece-Germany had some fouls today when Nowitzki couldn't get himself free.
The quality of play will get better in the medal rounds when teams have to play defense and execute. The US simply can't trap and run to win then.

Shame on the mainstream media for not touching this until he 'fessed up. I'm a Dem but am glad to see Edwards go down. This isn't the only issue he's a twoface on and it's better now than before the general on an Obama ticket. At least he now has time to help his dying wife.

Paris' response is the best TV to come out of this election so far. Stars to her PR person. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir was a master stroke.

TPOJ, thanks for the reply. If it's just a matter of colors and hair length, that would be one thing, but it's also not the case. You deconstructed the traditional as man-catching, with which I can't agree, but why not do the same for the other. What ideals if any can be articulated from the looks, anime and music? I'm surprised you'd suggest Gothic Lolita is something more feminist than traditional arts. If my hypothetical 14 year-old prefers tea over black lipstick and Miss Moppet get-ups, I'd be damn glad. I know which is more inclined to give her the discipline and carriage to do something meaningful when she's put herself in that position. There is something wrong with silly. And skanky too.

timtak, I tend to agree that the gaijin complex thing isn't the main driver, but I definitely think the infantilism as a lowbrow escape from elegance is. At one time, being an educated Japanese woman meant skill in traditional arts, etiquette and posture. Gothic lolita is cultural degradation and the plots of those anime are intellectual kryptonite.

Hey cleo, thanks for the reply. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you--doubtful that you're still reading this. Again, I don't see a problem in the contradiction you keep pointing out. The fact that the kid was instrumental--or at least proximate--to the deaths of soldiers pretty well means the government doesn't help him out. You don't intervene on behalf of teen runaways who mug and kill a person either. You try them as adults.

Anyone who thinks Japan's last 8 years in its relationship with America does not understand how much ground they gained bilaterally after Clinton.

She looks and sounds like every other gravure idol, maybe better and suddenly now everyone has discriminating tastes? Is it that someone pointed out she's American? The Japanese can't seem to get enough of her.

Posters appear to have ignored the "for Japan" part of the question. Without comment on my own preferences, the answer for Japan is clearly John McCain. This is not to say that the Japanese government and people are not totally gaga over the prospect of America's first black president. But from day two, which presidency would be best for Japan?
For folks who can remember the 1990s, democrats are stiffer on trade, less likely to help Japan boost its international prestige and less likely to share defense information and technology with the Japanese. An Obama presidency increases questions and volatility over how the US will handle its macroeconomic policy and trade with China, relations with North Korea and others. McCain is much more likely to be predictable, and to place Japan at the center of US policy to Asia. It's not the sexy prediction to make, but it happens to be unimpeachable.

Cleo, although I'm not unsympathetic to what you're saying about child soldiers in Sudan, the critical difference is that Khadr was caught in a firefight in which US soldiers were killed. Of course child soldiers in the abstract are bad, but when they're shooting at you that trumps the abstract. It's unreasonable to expect unconditional support.
Given his bio on Wiki, I very much doubt he wasn't disturbed before his incarceration. Parental choices have severe consequences for kids, some of which harm them irreversably. My heart goes out to the kid in some ways, but I'm more inclined to condemn his parents anew for their choices than I am to pick up an armband. Being a parent yourself and having seen kids suffer because of their parents, I'm sure you understand what I mean. I feel sorry for him in principle, but not in specific.

I think this needs to be looked at through the prism of Shia-Sunni rivalry. Faster withdrawal tilts government in favor of Shiites. Sooner than later is better, wouldn't you agree, Netanyahubush?
