diggerdog -- silly post. Just because something has been part of Japanese culture for centuries does not make it right, and critisizing it does not mean you are Japan bashing. No, it is recognizing that all cultures have room for improvement/change, even Japan. Got that?

Because you think YOUR moral on what animal to kill is higher than anyone elses?

    Killing animals to eat. Outrageous!

A human rights documentary would be so much more interesting.

smithinjapan: if the Japanese media were an indication of the medals that other countries achieved, there would be no other countries in the world but Japan.

What is wrong with you? You always speak out of the most bitter angle possible.

It feels like you haven't been to much other places than Japan.

smithinjapan: I have no doubt you think it's an interesting question. You probably also think it's 'interesting' to ask someone who catches a cold why they bothered to catch it.

No it's interesting to dissect what she thinks is the missing parts. You are not adressing the issue of whether you think that is disrespectful or not.

I'm a long time fan of figure skating compared to you who only seem interested in downtalking athletes who don't follow your code of behaviour. Who cares if she don't show happiness for silver or not. You probably haven't been close to any olympic training.

ptolemy: Japan's media are not professional journalists but just presenters

It's always funny to see foreigners put their own spectrum of rights and wrong on another countries work force. Have you seen NBC at all?

    > browny1: The Japanese poular media, especially those with apparently little sport competition nouse, should try to admire some of the greatness of other athletes instead of searching for excuses wrapped in regret.

    Grasping for straws.

ptolemy: Mao Asada did not start crying until the pompous ass of a reporter asked her, "Why do you think didn't you win the gold medal?" That shows the lack of respect and propriety that a reporter should have.

I think that's an interesting question.

Kreza23: I think there is a lot of unfair criticism from foreigners because they are misinterpreting what they hear on TV

I think that's the core of smithinjapan problem.

These stupid questions happen everywhere. You have them in Norway and Sweden. People promise a distinct amount of gold and not getting them. Ever heard of Norwegian skiing kings? Their reaction to fail makes this the micro bit that it is.

Sweden lost an olympic hockey repeat made some good stuff.

Actually I don't mind crying. I intepret it to be close to your own feelings.

BurakuminDes: I'm losing track of each event!

    lol bura. You're just funny.

In case they win gold you don't mention the equally highpowered press reaction instead you concentrate on Mao-chan. Kinda shows the objectivity of a few forumites here.

dontpanic: "This means Watson needs more doners" Considering the number of boats he's in the market for, I'd suggest he's already getting them.

No I meant he need MORE doners otherwise he wouldn't quit the whale war.

GJDailleult: I take it you didn't watch this live then. There were about ten minutes of such not smiling moments in a row.

That's a BIG problem. Athletes not being happy when they make mistakes.

Everyone has to be happy for YuNa? I'm not.

sfjp330: Probably the best female skater performance in the history for Olympics event.

Did you see Oksana in lillehammer? That was very touching.

Yuna don't touch as much as she breaks records in points.

seesaw: Kim Yu-na..yay! she's got class! Regret Mao looks so sour-grape..but that's normal for J women. I was in the final for Kimono contest some years ago, and had witnessed how the J women behave at competition...they just cant be happy for others. I wish Mao had shown a better sporting spirits,... like Mirai Nagasu!

That is a very scientifically research. Thank you for posting this data.

I once saw a beauty competition with Korean girls. The K women all had plastic smiles on their faces. K women usually have very plastic-like smiles.

    ptolemy:

Every single lady skating in this event has about the same chance.

Yu Na have won 9 of her 10 last competitions. After trailing 5-20 points from the SP this is not true anymore.

I think Yu Na will have to fall 2 times for any girl to catch up.

Even so, I would still be happy if Mao just makes a perfect skate. If she can't keep up after a perfect skate she will probably be happy anyway.

I'm simply assuming Yu Na will skate perfectly as well. I don't hope her to fall but looking at past olympic finals show that errors have made decisions before.

Yu Na will also make history if she takes gold. South Korea has never been better than 8th place.

I really liked that music Mao had on her SP. Yu Na's bond theme was really bad.

Bura really? I don't think any of the ladies are hot. Maybe one of the finnish skaters are but none of the Korean or Japanese. Nakano was cute though.

I saw a very good SP by Mao and her landing the triple axel should give her boost for the LP with two of those. I'm rooting for Mao because I like her more. Yuna looks kinda robotic and stiff with her facial expressions.

Yuna must have great confidence as she has won 9 of her last competitions. She has been practially unbeaten the last two years. It was strong by Mao to skate that good SP with all her expectations but it was maybe even stronger by Yu Na to go out there and top it.

I hope neither will fall in the free skate so they can be judged fairly.

As pointed out by many the favourite has not won in these past olympics for the women figure skating. Neither Lipinski, Hughes or Arakawa were the favourite at that time. But on the other hand no skater has been as dominant as Yu Na has been prior to the Olympics (I'm guessing).

Real props to Joannie considering her situation. I think she got maybe too rewarded. She is in fact very much a silver contender and why not gold if Yu Na falls.

Ando got a few trips downgraded. She will have problem to catch up even if she skates perfect.

Kind of disapointed to see Suzuki's level. I wanted to see Nakano instead but I guess the Japanese figure team has to be one of the toughest to make.
