You say gullible, I say I've read stupider comments than yours that weren't joking/sarcasm. So apologies for not assuming you are an intelligent being.

Ummm... what's the difference between a cell phone and a mobile phone? I thought they were the same? And a blackberry is a cell phone, too, isn't it? Just a different name and a "regular" keyboard instead of the traditional number pad...

As for cell phone use on planes, I'm really against it. When people chat to other people on planes (in person), they usually do so quietly, from what I've observed. But give a cell phone to most people and they become convinced the rest of the world wants to hear their conversation, too.

In Japan, most people are very considerate re: cell phone use, as that's the culture here. But in North America, most everyone seems to think they're so important that we all must hear about the minutiae of their lives. I think air rage will dramatically increase if cell phone use is allowed on aircraft... unless designated enclosed spaces are created.

I think the lifetime ban is too harsh.

He smoked some marijuana, he wasn't selling it as a sideline business. He wasn't getting little kids addicted to crack. Some perspective is in order, I think.

Zen: I think I'm just barely keeping up. Thanks for typing slowly. And I am in Japan.

I think most would agree that this movie has a limited demographic in Japan (and perhaps other countries). Thus the limited cinema release here. But the demographic that it does appeal to, in Japan, has taken quite a liking to it. Which the article touched on. I didn't know that every article that appears on Japan Today has to be on a subject that a large percentage of the population finds interesting. Or maybe because SATC largely appeals to women, then an article about it is "fluff", according to you?

Anyway, who cares if HBO shows are minor here? If there's an article on JT about a TV show I like or want to know more about, I'll read it. Same as others, I suppose. If you're not interested in it, why read it?

And I don't have cable but I still watch my favourite shows (CSI, House, Amazing Race, Dexter, etc.). You don't need cable to see any of those shows, or the ones you mentioned.

    Re: The New Zen

SITC was a no-show anyway as it was only broadcast on cable/satelite. So most don't even now about it hence why the movie only shows at "selected" cinemas.

You're joking, right?? I'm surprised no one has called you on this yet.

Most don't even know about it? Which country are you referring to?

And the cable company you're referring to is HBO, perhaps the most successful cable channel around, which has produced a wide variety of ORIGINAL programming that has become hugely popular and won multiple TV industry awards. Examples of some original HBO shows are:

The Sopranos Six Feet Under Curb Your Enthusiasm Deadwood Oz Rome

and, yes, Sex and the City (SATC)

Just because you don't know about SATC or any other HBO show doesn't mean other people don't.

And just FYI: The SATC movie is the top opening romantic comedy of all time, and has grossed over $300 million worldwide so far...

In my opinion, you have to get yourself adjusted to the time zone of the place you're going to before you get there.

After I get on the plane, I sleep if it's nighttime where I'm going, and wake up when it's morning in that country as well. If you can't fall asleep easily, take a couple of sleeping pills before boarding. They'll kick in after take-off, if not before. Wear a sleep mask, and earplugs if necessary. Inform the flight attendant beforehand not to wake you for meals, or put a note on your tray/the back of the seat in front of you.

If it's daytime in the country I'm going to while I'm on the plane, I don't sleep and force myself to stay awake, even if the rest of the plane is sleeping. I usually watch TV shows on my laptop.

Once I land, I only sleep when it's bedtime, not before.

However, I've never tried melatonin, ... or paint thinner...

After having read over all of these comments, I fully agree with TPOJ. It's clear that some people have some kind of axe to grind re: the Americans for goodness only knows what reason.

TPOJ's post at 1:18pm, with this statement:

Olympic competition, millions upon millions watching, competing with someone who has been taunting you, last second snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, insane amounts of adrenaline running through your body.

is a completely rational explanation (as if one were needed!) for Phelps' reaction.

Those that follow, with the same repetitive whinging, stink of sour grapes or something else, I don't know what.

    And no, I'm not American.

I totally agree with Ausintokyo, due to the rational nature of his argument.

think about whole nations body differences around the world, in general terms, Asians would always fly cheaper than Africans, simply because Asians are, on average, of a lesser body mass than most of the Western world.

Why can some people not grasp how riduculous it is to say that the fare, or even the fuel charge, should be based on the total weight of luggage + passenger ??

So a person in a wheelchair would have to pay a fare that included the weight of his/her wheelchair? And before you say that a wheelchair is a medical necessity and extra fat isn't... let me remind you that some people do have weight problems based on medical disorders. And even if that is only a small percentage, how to differentiate between those with a medical condition and those who became fat due to their habits/lifestyle? A doctor's note? Yes, with over-crowded hospitals and clinics, that's a good use of a doctor's and a patient's time... ?

This is indeed a very tricky issue.

It doesn't help when we read articles like the one above that include ridiculous lines like

In the end, both airlines were punished for being up-front with their customers, even if the execution of the policy perhaps needed work. Perhaps needed work? Air France staff humiliate a passenger by wrapping packing tape around him? Telling someone who has already boarded the plane that they have to buy another ticket? Unbelievable, in both cases.

I think skinny people (myself included) have no right to judge people (who want to fly) for being overweight. Are airlines going to give discounts to very short, thin people? To anorexics? My friends with kids, very small kids, have not yet reported to me reduced flight prices for them. Surely a 25kg child (or less) deserves to pay much less, if a fat person is going to be required to pay more ?

    Where to draw the line?

I have fat people in my family and I would be outraged if they were disrespected or humiliated by some bigoted airline staff.

Hmmm.... according to Forbes, Diaz earned $50 million in 2007. Quite a feat for someone with just 12 brain cells.

Funny how almost every (other) day, there's a picture of a J-bird on here and no one makes a comment about her brain cell deficit. I'd be willing to bet that in brains/common sense, a Western actress would beat a J-talent/"actress" any day. (Could be a good variety/game show idea...)

And no, I'm not talking about Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan -- they're celebutards, not actreses.

(And let's not even compare earning power... the Japanese would lose every time).
