"He said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky “said his main goal after this election is simply to win the next one.”

Which is exactly why the tea party is doomed even if it gets some people elected. Unless Mitch gets some big gains for bubba from Kentucky in the form of jobs or aids or a tax holiday, bubba is going to be throwing mud or something else at the next rally. You see, the tea party message has always been that "the problem with Merika is big gubment." Now they can play pork barrel politics and help their constituency and win the next election OR, they can note first-hand how people vote with their wallets. They have been hoisted up on their own petard, and it will be quite a spectacle. I predict humiliation because clearly, there are no brains to the operation, and none has a plan. And who is going to help them? The GOP? Ha! Fat chance. I know who....

Billionaires are supporting the tea party so that they can get what they want. And they will certainly try. Then they will deflect the tea party rage at some new target or just let them flop around like fish out of water.

I think the Dems are going to do better than they think they will. One or two tea partiers in the House and Senate will bring a little comic relief, but that is about it. Cutting Social Security is a non-starter, lol. I wonder what O'Donnell would propose for a new sin tax.

And guys guys... calling Obama a failure for this election is just plain stupid. First, it ain't over yet. Second, this is NOTHING compared to what FDR went through at mid-term elections before becoming the only pres elected to FOUR terms. Third, he is not running for anything. The only people who think Congress and Obama are the same thing are tea partiers, and relying on them for perspective is, well, questionable. And fourth. Wait for it. One word: veto.

Back to reality, whiners. You all enjoy your majority, if you can get it. You go shout to repeal social security and howl at the moon for slashing programs. Obama will let you put that in a nice package and then read it to the American people. He will chuckle a little about "progress reversal". And then it is veto city. Basically, (watch your time line) a GOP led congress would get ONE chance before election 2012. Good luck with that. You go call him a failure, but he is your only chance to pass your legislation. Remember? Think about that before bed tonight. And sweet dreams.

"The character development is awful and unbelievable (save the Dann-o character), and the plots are far too simple."

Which makes it just like the original series. Haha. Ok. 5-0 was maybe a little better, but that late 60s to mid 70s police show tsunami was amazing. Dragnet, Adam 12, Police Story, Columbo, Mcmillan and wife, McCloud, Streets of SF, Kojak, Starsky, Police Woman, Mod Squad, Charlies Hooters, and about 30 others I can't rattle off. Boy did they recycle plots. And they just churned that stuff out. 287 episodes of Hawaii five oh. Unbelievable. Astounding. What percentage of those were just awful?

But you know GJ has a good point. Every memorable show had one or two good characters, and the rest were usually mediocre at best. Lord and MacArthur made that show.

Like a lot of the better actors, they became so closely associated with the show that they could not move on. Sometimes it was the people in smaller roles who were able to move on to bigger and better things, as MacArthur did from his Gunsmoke experience.

I am the only guy here who will say that I most enjoyed him in Swiss Family Robinson... just... did ... that's all.

Why does NK do these antics? They seem so stupid and ineffective, but it must make sense to them somehow. If we could figure out why they think this way, it might make them easier to manipulate or just play around with.

What has worked for NK in the past? Apparently it is not working for them now because they seem to be trying anything to get some attention. What are they likely to try next?

Maybe the west should try to string them along. Rather than say we will never give them aid, we should say we are going to and then just kind of "forget" or put it off for next year over and over. Have some committees debate it. How could NK react to that? The west has tried passive, and aggressive, but why not passive/aggressive?

Would they ever get the hint? I doubt it.

Let's face it, we don't really want to negotiate with them anyway, so why bother?

"Anyway, let the US go back into the stone ages for all I care -- that's what a lot of them want, so let them have it for a while."

I feel this sentiment in my bones. I am so sick of hearing idiocy from the right that I would love to watch them stumble and muck things up just out of spite. You have Nevada and Alaska, two states just sucking the federal teat for 5 decades or more, breeding these lunatics saying "live free or die." They have no idea. Federal land leases have supported all these cattle ranchers in western states and they will say the same thing about "government pinheads" who have never worn cowboy boots. Florida gets huge sugar subsidies, and has benefitted handsomely from a real live Social Security system, and they are all whining too about big government.

Pork barrel politics, ugly as it is, made the Senate what it is today. Somebody somewhere seems to think you can cut all of US government subsidy program's but not Alaska's, or not Nevada's, or wherever else. When the first votes come up to cut some of those programs, they should sell front row tickets. You will NEVER see such squirming. Haha. And less than half of the squirming will be done by Dems, if the GOP gets its way.

Former Budget Director David Stockman wrote about what happened after Reagan became POTUS. It will be a fun review to go back to that. We will find, as Reagan did, that "no new taxes" and "cut our bloated government" will get people cheering, but once the election is over, nobody but nobody wants to cut spending. In whose interest would that be? And there was almost nothing to cut THEN, let alone now. I am pretty sure that the budget is gridlocked. It is not possible to cut 100 billion without getting sued by someone. Anyway, the book was called, "The Triumph of Politics." Politics triumphed all right, but you have to read the book to know what was vanquished. Ideology. Integrity. Honesty. Reagan flushed it all in his first 6 months in office.

Libs. Rally to this: Get a list of all the GOP/TP campaign promises and keep that list current to 2012. If they can be held to their word early and often, then the only honest GOP/TP left will be the RINOs. And the rest of the right won't let them win anyway.

I have heard it bandied about among tea party people that cutting the budget by 100 billion dollars is the goal.

Someone please tell me how that is going to work. I think it will go something like the GOP/ TP will cut just about everything and pass those bills in the House and Senate, and be on record for doing that, and then, what, Obama will veto that. And then government by continuing resolution will ensue. Obama will come out the hero. He was the nice guy trying to work with the GOP, and now he will have to let them sit out on their branch way way out on the right, and he will saw it off with a veto. This will be rich.

And if he does not veto it, then something is going to break, I think. All those unemployed government workers at all levels. All those grants to states not forthcoming. All of that negative multiplier effect. All of those clients of government in Texas, Alaska, California, Florida... ouch. 2012 will go up in smoke.

It is quite likely that people will come to realize just how much they need a government big enough to meet their needs and eventually throw the obstructionist anti-Keynesians out once and for all.

I am now looking past the election in wonder at how the GOP/TP can possibly keep their promises. I think they can't. If they do they are gone. If they don't they are gone. The tp has jumped the shark.

Pleasure: "We should all rejoice that this is the closest his seed will ever get to a woman."

I was actually thinking along these lines myself. This guy should get a special Darwin award. Although he is not dead, he has gotten out of the gene pool, toweled himself off, and is walking into the clubhouse for a drink.

I am just assuming that this is the only thing that turns him on, but if he is thrilled by condoms, and thinks that throwing semen in latex is a sex act, he won't be duplicating that code anytime soon.

And he is really dumb to do this, too. After a fit of barfing, I could imagine that any person could do A LOT of mischief if they had a condom full of someone's DNA and seminal fluid. Someone could have framed this guy for any number of crimes. Who is going to argue with DNA and seminal fluid found at the crime scene? Commit your favorite crime, give police an anonymous tip, and go live a happy life while getting this guy locked up in the process. Ta dah!

Anybody else doing something interesting? Any store-bought pikachus or gachapins?

I think this is called "counting your chickens before they are hatched." If you have some lukewarm Republicans who are holding the TP candidates at arms length just to avoid the stink.... And then you have some who are pragmatists who are afraid of being called a RINO.... And then you have some fascist brownshirts thrown in there who let their people face stomp 23 year old women. Well, if you have all that, you have "revulsion", "deer in the headlights", and "clueless newbies" I wonder where you start?

I guess a tax cut. LOL. I think some Wall Street accountants will be able to write up a bill so that some Tea Partier can sponsor it. Real quick.

No. Just kidding. You don't start anywhere. You fight with each other for about three months and then watch the economy improve. Then watch your guys get voted out and washed out by scandals. Then the brownshirts start face stomping the Republicans.

You want to know what will happen in 2012? Look at FDR vs. Alf Landon 1936. Polls showed Landon ahead by almost 20 percentage points. Final tally: Landon got all of 8 electoral votes. 8. Unemployment was 17%, but it was an improvement from 19% and 20% that had continued for years. People were relieved, and they knew FDR had gone through the whole thing along with them. Where is Obama going to go but UP in terms of economic news? Bush laid such a huge egg that people voted for Obama out of spite, and in 2012 they will do it again as a reward for a job well done.

But let's get back to the agenda: how is the GOP going to cut income taxes for people with no income? You are going to cut health care NOW? When people have lost coverage along with their jobs? You are going to cut government programs that are supporting people just to make some numbers on paper look better?

"You want real left wing demons to worry about? They don't exist in the American political mainstream. Never did and are unlikely to ever exist in such a conservative system."

Boy. That is the truth. Gus Hall and Angela Davis. They are real communists. They were full on jokes, and everyone knew it, but they were real live communists. I don't know if they are dead or what, but every time Obama gets called a communist, their blood pressure probably pops their head off like a champagne cork. Calling Obama a communist is like calling Vanilla Ice a rapper. Obama is a little to the left of Mr. Rogers, and far to the right of people like Studs Terkel or Gore Vidal, whom nobody would ever call communists. The communist/socialist epithets of the right are really silly stuff. Whenever someone uses that tactic, it is like a red light flashing "IDIOT ALERT".

"Neither party. Let me say it again clearly. NEITHER PARTY, can deliver these things. "

But only one is even trying. Keynesianism is not perfect, but as far as I know, bankruptcy, starvation and "classical medicine" are the only things that have historically moved the business cycle along quickly, so Keynesian remedies work as well as "capitalism" and "democracy" in my book, viewed conceptually. If I could give the keys to the US economy to Paul Krugman, I would do it.

I am not going to excuse the far right for standing on people's heads at rallies just because Obama has not been 100% successful. Rand Paul is supposed to be a libertarian. The Tea Party is supposed to be about freedom. But they are just a bunch of thugs backed by a bunch of plutocrats. (Look at the Rand Paul guy who stomped on the lady's head. He is a skinhead who looks like a pro-wrestler, and he is not a bodyguard, he is a campaign OFFICIAL.) I hope they lose and chew through the GOP in a fit of Thermidor. It is time that GOP moderates learned who really cracks the whip in the Republican party. McCain chose Palin because he thought she was harmless and that he could win with her without giving control of the GOP to the Christian faction. It was probably a misstep, but it saved the GOP to fight another day. Well now it's going to be the Taliban vs. the Stormtroopers vs. Wall Street duking it out for control of the GOP. McCain, Powell and any other respectable Republican became irrelevant a long time ago.

That is a good enough reason to vote Democrat. These days, you are a Roman or a barbarian at the gate. Rome ain't what it used to be, but it is worth saving.

Yes. There are many reasons for it. If you think of being polite as a necessity for social interaction, then the lessening of that interaction will make it less necessary. People are rude, but it does not mean that they are cruel or nasty.

"Hopefully they'll do what the people are electing them to do."

    More like

"Cynically they'll do what the people are electing them to do."

"It's fun watching the collective heads of those on the left explode as their heroes, the democrats, head for a political lynching next Tuesday."

This really sums it up for the gop/tp cheerleaders. Nov. 2 is the end. It is what they were praying so hard for. tkoind is exactly right about you all, though, it really will be the end. There is no agenda or plan, just anger. Thermidor. Everything that the tp stands for will disappear by the time of the first press conference after Nov. 2. What is their mandate? In truth, there isn't one. Well, it is whatever the elected candidate says it is, but if it is the least bit out of touch with what angry voters were voting for, then the gop/tp will have lost 2012 by Nov. 15.

And if you look at how the gop/tp campaigns were formed and run, there was no platform or consensus building going on. Things might fall apart for the gop/tp really fast because there is no leader or program. Obama is holding the whole Republican party together. Karl Rove is not eligible to be the House Majority Leader. How long can they stay united when the RINOs are calling the TPers lunatics and noobs?

The Dems will do better than people think they will, and all those voters will vote again. The gop/tp anger bus has brought some tourists to the party, but they are not going to be too energized once the tp people become impotent insiders. I don't see what the gop is so happy about. Just for instance, what is the GOP game plan for 2012? What platform is going to keep moderates, rich people, religious people, and TP people all under one tent? And the closer the gop associates itself with the most populous two of those groups, the more of the center they have to give up.

I see a Dewey Defeats Truman in the making. Or if you go further back....

Franklin Roosevelt's Democrats lost plenty of seats in the House and Senate during the early 30s, but knowing what you know about history, ask yourself two questions: Were the Republicans celebrating then? So why celebrate now?

    Non threatening, weak, non challenging....

They are the kind of entertainment that is so banal that no brain is needed to enjoy them. None at all. They mean different things to different people, but that meaning is very close to meaningless.

The message? I don't think there is one. The medium? Children. There is not even a focus. Finding some meaning in 48 members of a group is something that a trained professional schoolteacher can't accomplish during a 50 hour work week.

    I think it is noise.

Maybe they are popular because nearly everyone can find something to say about them.

Nobody has said it, but it needs to be said.

The GOP and TP are lying about Obama. They have been doing so from the get go. You can't change that. But Obama and others have spent way too much time caring about that. If the Dems get whacked in this election it will be because they wasted time and energy trying to compromise instead of letting Pelosi and crew just mop up the floor with vote after vote. Instead, they just gave away the initiative.

Now things will get harder, and all the lies about Obama will reach some kind of crescendo, and Obama will become less effective as he moves to the middle.

Just as with the DPJ, these brief shining moments of strong mandates should have been seized for radical reform, and they were not. Dem vulnerability in 2012 will come from hesitancy in 2008 and 2009 more than anything.

Of course, the GOP and TP won't be able to get much done with whatever gains they get because there are about 4 factions all trying to take credit for likely gains this election, but their overall power to play obstructionist games is going to be a real pain. We will see. Between TP shark jumping and GOP conniving against their own allies, there is a lot of mutual distrust there.

I think I see the Dems way out to clear sailing in 2012, and Obama has already started setting it up.

Just want to take a minute to emphasize this too: Let's say that the GOP and TP manage to get what they want. Just everything. That means NO healthcare program, no environmental legislation, no alternative energy or space programs, no public works, deferred maintenance on all government projects, ironclad borders, slashed education and unemployment funding, no family planning aid at all, probably cut social security, and rolling back of all kinds of civil rights for people of all kinds. And tax cuts for rich people. etc. Factor in that US oil production is falling off fast, and that the dollar is dropping like a stone, the US will become increasingly dependent and increasingly vulnerable.

If we assume that the US doldrums last about a decade (half as long as Japan's), I don't know how the US is going to make it. That is the simplest way to put it. After that decade, Americans will be looking enviously at lifestyles and standards of living in maybe 20 different countries, wondering what happened to the land of the free and home of the brave. If it gets to that stage, then capital flight and brain drain will follow. People are going to get even angrier and things will just ... fall apart.

"Obama is a tax and spend communist."

Communism is worker ownership of the means of production. Compare and contrast Obama administration initiatives in health care legislation with Bush initiatives designed to take a large ownership stake in GM, authorize bailouts of banks and brokerages, while announcing policies designed to create a government "ownership society".

It is an essay question. No multiple choice.

"Obama likely to focus on deficit in next 2 years"

That would be a shame. He should focus on economic growth and getting people jobs. America needs an FDR, not a Hoover.

The deficit is a number on a piece of paper. Almost everything else matters more. To me, focusing on the deficit is the same as taking your eye off the ball.

On the other hand, if the economy is set to improve anyway, according to some observers, and all of these GOP people will be coming in, this might be a way for Obama to let the GOP recommend some new taxes and cuts in social security. Obama wants to play ball, GOP, you hear that? So let's see what coherent policies come out of the GOP... I am guessing there won't be much. Who needs a veto when the opposition can't tie their shoes?

    "Hooter girls"

ugh. Girls, huh? Does that violate child labor laws? Is a girl a minor by definition? No? So these are women who don't object to being called girls, is that it? And she serves alcohol. So let me see, a girl has to be older than 20 or she can't be a girl. And if she is a woman, she can choose to be a girl. And if she gets too old, she can't be a girl anymore.

There is this old joke about a guy who trades in his 40 year old wife in for two 20s. Ha. ha ha.

Except when you really think about it, it is the definition of hell. You grow up with your wife, you raise kids, and then you want to start over trying to deal with the average idiot "Japanese girl"?

This list of ten things above is chock full of typical stupidity, which is reinforced by constant contact with stupid friends and insipid reading material. You know, if a guy-friend did these things, you just would not hang around with him, so why do girls get away with it? Because men see them as sex objects. Women might become normal people if men stopped looking at them as sex objects.
