As I have said before, the only way that ideology was involved is that this kook wanted to kill this Jewish woman for her beliefs. There ARE ideologies that are offended by "uppity" minorities and genders, and they are the same people who despise Obama.
He followed the laws of the state and fired 31 times... Exercising his American God-given right to kill defenseless people.
For me, it is not hard to identify the mental illness here. The guy wanted to kill "the government", which would be exemplified by a congressman, a judge, and people at a political event. There is also the insanity, the social suicide, of choosing to allowing "death" to pervade society while condemning "health" for all society.
When Wyatt Earp was running things in Cochise County, you could not wear or use firearms in city limits. Good thing we are more civilized now in the 21st century.

"Sail, I love you, and I often agree with you, but you're going too far here. He's one guy, and sure a nut, but to say Dupnik wasn't doing his job, and that he knew this guy was a loon and failed because he didn't prematurely lock him up, is simply nonsense. Admittedly it makes more sense then trying to link the guy to Palin and the Tea Party, but still, its out there."
You know, after you guys get a room, you should think about what it feels like to be wrongly accused of murder and terrorism. Maybe that is how a lot of Muslims in America feel these days.

USARonin. People are buzzing about mens rea already. He clammed up and cited fifth amendment almost immediately. It appears that he was lucidly contacting old friends hours before the attack. I will stick with my initial impression.

"Ummm....It was posted on her website for all to see"
UMMMMMMM. Yeah. That is kind of the problem. If she feels no guilt or regret, then why did she take it down immediately? Why did she get her aide to say..UMMMMM... they are surveyor's marks? Palin herself referred to them in "gun" terms.

"Monday’s flash flooding struck without warning in Toowoomba, a city of some 90,000 people nestled in mountains 700 meters above sea level. "
Flash floods. There were some that hit Spain (or Italy) about a decade ago that were so bad that the towns were just abandoned. Mud and rock two stories high, from the foundation to the rafters.
I can see this happening in Toowoomba. "Nestled in the mountains" means taht you have all that water from up the valley PLUS all the water from surrounding slopes, PLUS slopes up the valley. And because the slopes are rocky, there is no drainage. If the storm is huge, or if the timing of smaller storms is just right, all of that water hits the town in a huge wave. It must be worse than a tsunami, because it just keeps flowing. It does not recede.
Terrible news. I hope they can recover. If anybody can, Aussies can.

"Tatanka, I'll bet one of my Sig Sauers against one of your sidearms that this guy will never be put on trial.
He'll never see daylight again, but he won't see a criminal trial either."
Interesting comment that somehow I am not ready for yet. If you look at Hinckley, he "got away with an insanity plea". And went from full on prison to something less than that to a kind of halfway house just in the last couple of years. His girlfriends say he is kind of a nice guy and think he should be "freed". I seem to remember that he has problems with lying and being manipulative, and that is how they know he is not keeping up with therapeutic goals. But he did not kill anybody. He used a .22 revolver, which is what... a five-shooter? He sees daylight every day. Walks around in public in sweaters and corduroys.
Kaczinsky and McVeigh were the hard cases.
For different reasons, I think this guy will get a trial. He knows right from wrong. He knew who at least one of these people was and what her beliefs were. He premeditated this, acquired a big clip, and described it as assassination. Once he starts talking, he will face even more charges. A haircut like that in Tucson was not chosen to improve his tan complexion, after all. He has been in trouble many times. This is his "big chance" and he is not going to blow it by keeping his mouth shut.
I am sure the ACLU will fight as hard for him as it would for anyone else.

"Lets see, a quote from a former classmate, and someone who said she used to be his friend until he went reclusive, describes him as "quite liberal" and as a "political radical." "
Sorry. That quote and mine seem to cancel each other out. And maybe Marx is cancelled out by Hitler in Jared's library of great books. But don't retreat, Molenir, reload. Try to convince me that skinheads secretly admire Mao and Che more than they admire Adolf.
"Go check out Michelle Malkins website"
Go check out the Coalition to Stop Gun violence website, it does you one better and limits itself to political threats. Oh, but wait. Here is a headline from TODAY'S NEWS! Sen. Michael Bennett of Colorado received death threats just the day BEFORE this shooting. You can guess his political party, and the guy he replaced is on Palin's "gunsight" map! Palin targets Senators too! And the threats were bad enough that the right wing kook has been arrested on Federal charges for yeah. You guessed it. But don't retreat, Molenir, reload and blast away. I know that gun rhetoric really gets your juices flowing, so I thought I would include some.
"The simple fact of the matter is, people who are pushing this as either left or right, have a vile agenda"
The simple fact of the matter is that it is a political assassination. Jared wrote that himself. You need to open your eyes and look at what people are doing in your name. If you want me to look the other way while people who share your beliefs kill elected officials, mothers, judges, and children, you can pound sand. I will blow Gabrielle's trumpet because she can't. If this is how Sarah Putin eliminates her enemies using gun-sights on maps, people should know about it. Why do you want to obstruct that? I would be just as infuriated if someone took a shot at Boehner, but we both know nobody ever will. He is not on Palin's hit list.
"lets agree that we disagree on politics, and agree that he's a nutcase that should be locked up."
Agree absolutely on both counts. I knew this was going to happen from the very first time I heard Republicans talk about killing people who disagreed with them. McCain did too. So why did "lock and load and reload" Sarah not see it coming? She either knew and did not care, or she did not know and should have. She whips things up, collects her check, and walks away when her fans start shooting her targets.
"But oh... she could not have stopped this."
Yeah. But why do I think she would not even try?

This still amazes me. It was earlier reported that American Renaissance said that this guy had never visited their website.
There is no conceivable way whatsoever that a website operator can make this statement accurately about this man.
And yet, they did. Immediately. That speaks volumes.
And the DHS bought it... or said they did.
Either way, I suspect that a lot more information will be coming soon because someone is certainly not telling all that they know.

"Actually, its coming from some of his former classmates. People who knew him, rather then people who want to comment on his preferred reading list."
No. I have quotes from people who knew him, shown above, saying he thought the government controlled people too much. And he blogged and had MySpace too. Anti-semitism. Constitution this, forefathers that. Widen your "sights" a little and factor in his voting affiliation, and that sounds like tea-party rhetoric to me.
"You say this despite the fact that on left wing blogs, she was being targeted as a bad Democrat? Talk about a desperate attempt to shift blame."
Yeah. Because everyone knows that Democratic blogs and police blotters are overflowing with death threats from Democrats against Jews and Federal judges. Get a grip. Your denial is what's overflowing. Do you have a memory? McCain told Republicans to back off after they started shouting "Kill" at rallies. Remember that? And what about the guy who brought a gun to Gabby's speech a few years ago? A dem? Not by any stretch. And her office was vandalized immediately after she voted with Obama on health care. This guy is a skinhead, not a hippy.
"the many, many examples of left wing hate and violence"
I think you have two too many "manys" there. Please give me one example. You will be Googling all day for that one, or does throwing a shoe at a G8 or WTO meeting count?
"Barely winning, in left leaning district does not a good argument make."
Pretty cold Molenir. I guess you are saying she deserved to get shot because she barely won? Politics and violence hand in hand is it? One less vote for Obama in the House, is that it? Don't retreat Molenir. Reload.
You don't want to make it a right/left issue because it is. He was a right wing, Fed hatin, head shaving, Mein Kampf reading, judge killing kook who was egged on by a party that puts politicians and judges in crosshairs. You get busy white-washing this, but I see what it is. I am not going to convince you, for sure, because you just don't care how many people get killed for your agenda. You go on and try to convince someone else that this guy did not perform an "assassination" even though he wrote down that he intended to do exactly that and targeted ONLY Democrats, just like Palin did.
"and those who try to make it about it, regardless of whether he is left or right, are acting despicably."
You know what? I want the truth. I am telling people how it looks to me, and I know something. I don't want what FOX tells me or the Huffington Post. You should do the same. I am not posting because I want people to vote Democrat. I want people to see the kind of scum that gets churned up by hate mongers on the right who talk about "second amendment solutions". I don't want people to just accept some dumb quote and attempt to dismiss the whole thing as one more spree-killing. That is bull. He killed people for their political beliefs and political positions. Apparently, he also did it because she was Jewish, which does not bother anyone posting here in the least. He targeted Jews, politicians and judges. Turner Diaries.

"Sorry, but the information available suggests as I and others have pointed out, that he is a left wing nutcase."
No. The information that you have selectively cherry picked supports your case. The "liberal nut case" view is coming solidly from some guy on the right who overlooks Mein Kampf on this guy's reading list and blogs and jumps all over the Communist Manifesto.
"A left wing loon tries to kill a center left woman, and a right leaning judge because of their views,"
Nice try. But the more you try to say that this lady was hunted by the left, the more contorted your appeal. You also miss the point that he was a FEDERAL judge. Right wing lunatics want to dismantle government, as we see in the Turner Diaries and every tea party campaign slogan. The agenda is clear. If the right cannot co-opt, corrupt, or smear a popular candidate who wins consistently at the polls, well then the right always has at least one more option... doesn't it? It is a disgrace that is not uncommon to ol' Cochise County. The cowboys are hunting down the Earps all over again.

"Make no mistake. My point is not to say that Sarah Palin is responsible at all. ... No. My point is different. I think she is showing that she was and is very... irresponsible.
No, your point is that she's the only one irresponsible."
I never said any such thing. Ever.
Regarding all of your other posts, I guess I can sum it up with you being a naysayer and obfuscator... and that is about it. I used information from the articles on JT and the Wall Street Journal. Big deal. Look at you reaching for straws. And NO, impressing Jodie Foster is NOT a political motivation. That is my point. Read it again. Read it all again. You say he is a liberal lunatic or a John Hinckley, or whatever. I say he isn't. I make a logical inference based on what the available information shows.
He tried to kill an elected representative and a federal judge because of their political views at a political event. This is a political killing. Try to spin it. Keep trying. I won't be convinced that the guy just did this because he could not get to a crowded McDonald's.
Anyone ever read the Turner Diaries? Guess not. Good.

WilliB and Tea, regarding me being a psychic. Well, let's put it this way. Does this sound like a tea-party recruit?
"Mr. Montanaro recalled his friend developed "a hate for government and just how everything was systematic...He thought government controlled people too much.""
and for anybody who knows anything about the internet, this is an impossible claim from the American Renaissance.
"The group’s leaders said in a posting on their website that Loughner never subscribed to their magazine, registered for any of the group’s conferences or visited their Internet site"
and, oh brother, I have heard this kind of thing before:
"Loughner claimed the college was illegal according to the U.S. Constitution."
Add to that that facts that he was into "specie-monetarism" and that he called his act an "assassination" a priori, in writing, and you don't have to be a psychic.
Hmm. Suspicious of government and the Fed. Right wing anti-semitic xenophobic group cannot plausibly deny a connection to him, but denies it anyway. Interpreting Constitution for fun and profit. Admits a priori he targeted her as a political figure (that is what "assassination" means). Sounds pretty classic to me. Jumping to conclusions? I could tippy-toe a conclusion here. He is even getting Tim McVeigh's lawyer! This Arizona guy was a typical right wing dork who shot at her, the judge, and others to make a political statement. And he will make more.
My psychic powers? Psychic powers like these help me tie my shoes, buddy. Gyaku ni, a person would have to do some serious contortion to make a claim that this guy had the political motivations of John Hinckley.

Make no mistake. My point is not to say that Sarah Palin is responsible at all. Oh no. Not in the least. Crosshairs on political maps and statements about guns and hunting used in campaigns are not meant to energize or influence people at all. No. She is not responsible, and it will never ever be proven that she was. And hey, if it can't be proven, it can't be true, right? People will be comfortable with that.
No. My point is different. I think she is showing that she was and is very... irresponsible.

Sarah Palin: "Don't retreat. Reload."
That is her statement and the mentality of her ilk. Time to own up to it. McCain carefully called for restraint when it was clear the whole right wing frenzy was getting out of hand. But nobody listens to him anymore. We all knew that someday someone on the right was going to lose it. It is not "just" an abortion doctor this time. It is a congressman, a federal judge, a child, and several more.
Go ahead and criticize and obfuscate. Pile it on, people. When it comes out that he is an anti-semite, xenophobe, tea-party affiliated, etc., you will just have to feel that much more guilty about it. This is not John Hinckley and you know it. It is Turner Diaries and John Bircher.
Truly sad.
Molenir. If it can't be ended for reason or decency, let it end by shame. If Palin were truly presidential, she would acknowledge that this kind of thing is an American disease. Can she bear even a jot of shame for this imagery of "taking aim at people"? Even the NRA does not teach people to aim at people. So how did taking aim at politicians come into the US national political discourse? Why does she show national politicians as targets? How quickly she runs from any responsibility. Her only statement is denial of any connection. No condolences. No nothing. Just denial and running for cover, presumably at home with her secessionist husband.
I used to think the wingnuts could not think. Now I see that they can not even feel.

Oh. I won't say it is partisan, but I will state the obvious. She was killed because of political beliefs that she held so strongly that she was willing to keep them despite death threats and various intimidation efforts over many years. And her beliefs were only denounced as dangerous and treasonous by one side of the spectrum, so people should just do the math. I don't have to say it.
Gabby is an accomplished Arizonan, married to an astronaut. The little girl who was gunned down was born just days before Pat Tillman, another patriotic Arizonan, decided that his principles and her birthday were worth giving his life and his future for. Who would call them partisan before calling them Americans first? And a federal judge? Wow. This was not senseless, people. Someone targeting a duly elected congressman and a sitting judge is not an insane spree killer.
All of those people, from Gabby to Pat, set their sights on representing and improving the polity. They set their sights on doing things to help others. Even that little girl was not just a 9/11 celebrity. She lent her spirit and specialness to various causes to improve the polity.
Most obviously, others are willing to "set their sights" on ripping the polity apart by destroying these people, or killing them. In that same Cochise County, 130 years ago this October, Virgil Earp was gunned down after local newspapers had riled the people up enough to convince them that the Earps were murderers and not just Arizonans trying to protect their polity from a crooked sheriff and dirty politics. Cochise County, Arizona, and America continue to let their best and brightest and wisest take bullets in the head because of hate.
Enough. If it can't be ended for reason or decency, let it end by shame. Politics that "take aim" at humans ought to be banned, and Sarah Palin should lead the charge. It is the least she could do.

This year? We were all blinded by myopia long ago. As most are saying, it is just a blur.
The only news that matters is that another year of environmental destruction has taken place.. domestically and especially internationally. Humanity has lived beyond its means yet again, and the Kyoto accord, which was a band aid at best, is going into the bucket.
Wars and rumors of war are increasingly centering on resources and infrastructure, not ideology. Disasters are highlighting the vulnerability of human systems to things like rain and snow, which seem just a tad different from usual patterns. Just different enough to cause billions in damage on about a weekly basis.
In 50 years, the environment and access to resources will be the only thing that matters. Kim Jong Il will be dust. The Chilean miners will have a story to tell their grandkids. The rest of us will be living in a different world. Who knows whether it will be food crises, economic crises, energy, minerals, war or warming, or all of the above? The big story is that nobody really cares. And the people of 2060 will curse us apathetic souls of 2010 for being distracted by ... whatever nonsense made the papers this year.
Posted in: What do you think was the biggest news, domestic and international, this year?
