This woman has all the signs of postpartum (or post-natal) depression. PPD is fairly common and is attributed to the hormonal imbalances following childbirth. Although I am not excusing her actions, it is a medical fact and is a frequent cause of infanticide. Due to the culture of hiding mental problems and comparative lack of support in Japan for mental illness, it means this sort of incident occurs more frequently here. It is a terrible tragedy but not a simple case of an evil mother not caring for her baby and deciding to kill it.
