Was the dropping of the atomic bombs necessary?
Yes, it was. It ended the war. Gave the Japanese emperor an excuse to surrender. Move on. Nothing more to see here.

Japan does not have any global phone brands. The manufacturers also missed the bus on the smart-phone wave. It will take quite a bit of time for them to get competitive globally.
Posted in: Japan’s cell-phone industry is emblematic of how little regard is given to tapping new markets overseas. The nation makes cutting-edge phones, yet with features and functions that differ markedly from global standards. As the population shrinks, Japan needs to think bigger and more internationally.

I would not go and say that the education overseas is in tip-top shape as well though.
Posted in: Observing the education of small children overseas, I was struck by how different the education is from Japan. They take a scientific approach to child education. For example, how many nursery teachers in Japan have master's degrees in education or psychology?

We will now be discussing which part should have been blocked and which part should not have been but I think the real question is whether this law was necessary in the first place. According to the this article, I am not sure it was..
Are we really sure it is not fearmongering from politicians?

When I first came to Japan, Yodabashi Camera did not want to accept my Citibank Japan credit card since they thought it was a foreign bank's card. After I explained it was actually Citibank Japan, they accepted it. Other than that no problems so far.
I work with Citibank and Visa. I find them much better at handling foreigners (naturally) than Japanese banks. Shinsei Bank also does not look bad but I prefer to have only one credit card so if I ever give up Citi, they would be my next choice.

No, it is not. The one who earns the money has the final say in the decisions. Simple as that. You want a say in it? Get off your bum and work to contribute (unless you are physically disabled)

Maybe not. But the breadwinner should control how it is spent. If one does not contribute to the family income, one does should not have much say in how it should be spent.

I do not mind banning all religious wear if we are going to treat everyone the same across the board and not be biased against Islam only.
Let us also ban Jewish head caps, Christian crosses (I think Italy did, but there is an appeal),etc... from all public places. I am not sure we can.
And if we cannot treat every religion the same, then this process is nothing but discrimination.
Posted in: In some countries, there are moves to ban or restrict the wearing of religious clothing and symbols such as burqas, veils, head scarves, skullcaps, turbans and crucifixes in public places like schools, recreational facilities and so on. What’s your stance?

Ummm.. I am not so sure about this.
Foreigners buying land in other countries is always a touchy subject. Where are they buying? How much are they buying? Should there be a cap on ownership? In case the government feels uncomfortable with anything, can they come and take it back? etc...
I somehow cannot blame the Japanese getting upset over foreigners buying lots of their land. I would get upset if similar thing happened in my country.
If we are talking about China in particular, I am not sure what their intentions are in Japan but it is a well known fact that they are after resources to support their expanding economy (Mines in Australia, resources in Africa,etc...) India is also trying to expand as well. Have they come to Japan, I wonder?
Japanese taking care of the forests poorly is different matter that needs to be addressed apart from foreigners purchasing Japanese land.

Yeah, I am one of those. I do not see any need for a 3D TV. Maybe it can be a niche market, only for those tech fans.
Posted in: Television makers' expectations for 3D are high but looking at the degree of interest among consumers, there is a big gap with the enthusiasm of manufacturers.
