the Haneda-Sendai,Niigata flights don't exist for the very reason you mentioned, that the airlines can't effectively compete with JR on those routes. There's no Haneda-Hanamaki either.

There were times, however, that the Haneda-Niigata air route was revived when the Joetsu Shinkansen was under repair from the earthquake/derailment.

Also, regarding JAL safety record with 747's, I think they only had 2 747 hull losses, of which 1 was blown up on ground by terrorists. Of course flight 123 is notorius, but many fingers also point to Boeing…
