Fast Retailing (Uniqlo), Rakuten are rapidly growing with mergers and acquisitions. Like any company who are expanding business overseas they need to use English as the official company language. Plain and simple.

Sony, Nissan Co. are already using English in their management meetings.

Toyota's Japanese management rejected to use English as working language. But as recent safety crisis (massive recalls) is blamed on company secrecy they have started to promote non-Japanese managers. Probably they will be the last major company to switch to English.

Also to note that Japanese domestic market is rapidly shrinking. By 2050 Japanese population is expected to shrink to 95-100 million. And only half of it will be in the 15-65 age group (working population). Fewer and older consumers mean fewer sales. By 2050 Japanese language will not be as important as it is today.

Posted in: What do you think of the decision by major Japanese companies such as Rakuten and Fast Retailing to make English the official language at their management meetings?

Ando, 62, believes the stiffest challenge is curbing salt in noodles. “We have to do it gradually, step by step,” said Ando, .. “Our longtime customers enjoy the salt in our noodles, so we cannot simply reduce it just like that.”

Definitely. One pack of cup noodles has about 1500 mg of sodium, which should be the sodium intake for the entire day. Actually American Heart Association recommends 1000 mg of sodium per day.

Average Japanese gets about 5000 mg of sodium per day. No wonder Japan has very high rates of gastric cancer, hypertension and cerebral hemorrhage.

Food industry will always resist salt reduction as salt helps them to cut prices.

Well white pasta is a "cheat meal", so you can it eat once a week or so, but not frequently. It is better to replace it with whole grain (high fiber) pasta. Refined white flour is as dangerous as white rice or white sugar.

I suggest you stick to whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal, bran, rye flour etc.

Also ready-made pasta sauce contains high levels of salt and various chemicals. You would better stay away from those.

Posted in: Some diet gurus say pasta is good because it is low-fat; others say it's not so good because it's high carb. What do you say? Is it a healthy dish?

Don't let drunk people take trains and problem solved.

You would prefer they drove? Make sure you give an actual alternative solution if you say something like that or, your comment is meaningless.

Someone who is not drunk should drive they home. If they drink alone they should drink at home, like most of the alcoholics do. Also, they can always check in to a nearby hotel.

Japan is too permissive with public intoxication.

The real solution is alcohol prohibition, but we are a few hundred years away from it.

The real story is about 24,000 passengers who are affected and current state of alcoholism is Japan.

Drunk passengers are always a problem. They force planes to make emergency landings, cause delays, harass fellow passengers, vomit around etc.

Don't let drunk people take trains and problem solved.

During the last two decades Israel sold various technologically advanced military equipment to Turkey for very low prices. They have been a major ally in the modernization of Turkish military. Now they want to higher up those prices and some projects are delayed (the Heron deal). Also recently Israel found a better market in India.

Also Turkey-Russia relations are getting better and better. Most probably Russia will be a major military ally for Turkey in the coming years. Russia has advanced technology and Turkish military has a huge budget.

Turkish military would like to keep good relations with Israel but the Turkish government wants to strengthen ties with the Arab world. Beirut daily Al Akhbar's headline was typical: "Israel understands only Turkish."

Twice as likely to die in accidents, homicides, or suicides

38 percent more likely to die of heart disease

Typical Japanese diet is healthier than typical American diet, but as it is said in this article, it has some problems too. High sodium content is the major issue in Japanese diet, Japanese get 3 to 5 times more sodium than they actually need. Probably the major killer in Japan is table salt not tobacco.

A reversed sodium / potassium ratio is bad for health, and bad for the skin, the largest organ in the human body.

To the food listed here I can add citrus fruits, pumpkin, carrots, papaya, avocado, Brazil nuts and lots of good clean water.

Some Korean and Japanese woman have great skin even without makeup, probably genetic factors are involved. But the majority of them use skin-care products and make-up.

Major problem among people with white skin (low melanin) is "photo-aging", due to high UV exposure their skin looks older than its chronological age. People who avoid strong sunlight will always have a better skin than people who sunbathe at noon. No matter the diet they are on.

Tobacco and excess alcohol cause premature skin aging too.

Nowadays the term "Self-injury" seems to be more politically correct, but there is substantial literature using the term "self-mutilation".

Please see Wikipedia for Walsh and Rosen's "Self-mutilation" categories:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-injury

Chapter 4 of Walsh's "Treating Self-Injury: A Practical Guide" is available online. (Chapter 4: Body Piercing, Tattooing, Branding, Scarification and Other Forms of Body Modification)

    http://books.google.com/books?id=PlyFb0JLZ4EC&pg=PA48

As Walsh says, in the last 30 years "there has been a major shift in the acceptance of body modification as normative, even socially desirable, behavior".

Personally, I believe that tattooing is an "injury" as it breaks the protective barrier of the skin.

Yes, tattoos are examples of "self-mutilation".

Small tattoos, ear-lobe piercing, cosmetic surgery are classified as "Category I Self-Mutilation". Accepted by most people.

"Category II Self-Mutilation" include gang tattoos, full-body tattoos, body piercing. Accepted by sub-cultures.

    Walsh and Rosen classification (1988).

Presence of tattoos and other forms of self-mutilation (such as piercing) can be an indicator of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD).

ASPD is associated with physical aggression, suicide, drug abuse, sexual abuse and stealing.

Also people with tattoos can be carriers of various infectious diseases such as herpes simplex, hepatitis B and C, fungal infections, tuberculosis.

Tax on tobacco pays for far more than the health care needed by tobacco users. So we pay towards your health care.

Compared to developed countries tobacco tax is very low in Japan (in Asia and Africa in general). So if you're smoking in Japan you're not really paying us much.

But you definitely help us with the pension problem. The odds of dying before age of 65 is twice high among smokers when compared to non-smokers.

    Thank you for smoking.

Good news for the 2.5 million alcoholics of Japan. Now they can stop drinking vinegar and get drunk with this cheap source of alcohol.

Third-category beer contains no malt or very low amount of it. In Japan, beer is taxed according to its malt content. They are marketing this kind of stuff for low-income and young alcohol users.
