Someone needs to ask BO when those 5mil jobs, based on his "green" economy will become available and when that same economy will benefit the average citizen.

"Green", "Change", "Relief", etc. are all really swell words that everyone wants to be a part of. The fact of the matter is that the average citizen, IMHO, is more interested in instant relief and change NOW.

ANWR has immediate benefits in employment. The tech is great and provides a much smaller footprint than they will admit. And it can provide instant relief the moment the drilling starts.

DAMNIT. We have local resources, let's get em!

Ironic that those who have never been "news" or "today's man", except when they needed US assistance, are now taking a stance such as this.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the US the first to recognize them as thier own country back in the early 90's? Didn't the US specifically point to them as a trade partner to boost their new economy? Didn't the US fight for their admittance to the EU, NATO and some other organization?

Don't get me wrong... GWB is a moron, but let's face facts. The only reason they aren't some poodunk country with no growth or potential is because of the United States.

ANWR is the answer, along with allowing production/drilling within the 80% of our coastal area currently off limits. The technology to do this with very minimal footprints is here. CO2 emissions are NOT the problem. The issue is the plight of the spot-bellied, overly-green, fishing worm or some such other nonsense.

And there IS drilling within those off-limit areas, but not by US companies. Who has a rig 60 miles off the coast of Florida? That's right boys and girls... China.

Bubba vetoed a bill that would have allowed production in ANWR. Supported by the Democrats, their reasoning was that the benefits wouldn't be visible and solid for 10 years. That was 11 years ago. How many barrels of oil could have flowed in the past year or two if he had not vetoed it. Instead, they wanted to focus on alternative fuels. And they refused to fund that research at a level that would have provided benefits by now.

    Therefore.... mickey mouse it is.

And now the news reports are gonna start on how he was a loner.... co-workers will start airing their dirty laundry... classmates will talk about how he was such a strange kid... EVERYBODY will have noticed there was something "not quite right" about him... and NOBODY will have done anything. But, even if you wanted to, what could you do?

tkoind2.... wanna lay odds that a majority of people right now are hankering for that execution? 19, 19, 21.. how many other ages are represented amongst the dead? Your right that a rational approach is needed, but how would a rational approach RIGHT NOW help bring any closure to the families of the current victims?

Now, for the record, I am against the death penalty. I am all for life imprisonment, hard labor, no chance of parole and ZERO REHABILITIATION. Punishment only.

But how often do you see a life sentence in Japan?

You know.... when you do the right thing and EXPECT something,ANYTHING, for it... it is no longer the right thing.

Yes, a thank you is in order. But, not everyone is raised like that. It still doesn't mean that you shouldn't do the right thing at all times.

And when I say "you shouldn't...", I mean "those that do the right thing even when noone is watching"... Unlike you Henry.

    Skip,

So senators have more power than the president and VP? Can I quote that statement next time bush is blamed for everything that has happened? Apparently, the powerful senators failed to stop an "illegal" war, so THEY must be to blame.

Sushi - "Biggest problem here is that Sen. McCain has not, will not and can not articulate what that "victory" is, what it might look like, and when it might be achieved"

I know what you mean. It's not like he put a blurb on his public website that defines victory in that arena. Oh, wait a minute. HE DID. Right under ISSUES / IRAQ:

"The best way to secure long-term peace and security is to establish a stable, prosperous, and democratic state in Iraq that poses no threat to its neighbors and contributes to the defeat of terrorists. When Iraqi forces can safeguard their own country, American troops can return home."

Let's see... Stable, prosperious and democratic state. Poses no threat. Iraqi forces, both military and police, can safeguard their own country. THEN our troops can return home. Stable Government. Ability to provide security for their citizens.

Anything else you'd like him to define? He spills it all out on his very public website. It's not a secret...

At least, by the time it gets here, all the bugs should be out of the sytstem. When I lived in Hawaii, one of my realtors just HAD to have one. And 2 months later she got her first bill. Yes, she was one of those that experienced the "bill of 200 pages". Damn thing arrived in a BOX!

Took me 2 hours to quit laughing. And then.... the lowered the prices during that particular debacle, and she just broke down crying.

But, I got to say, she let me play with it. I like it. Web browsing is awesome on the thing.

    Yabits,

Let me clarify... In rereading my post, it appears that I have made it sound like I am questioning YOUR integrity for using these numbers. My apologies, that wasn't my intent. I was questioning your willingness to simply believe those numbers as reported without questioning the obviously bad math.

    Yabits,

I think you've got it backwards. The pro-military groups are not going around doing anything other than DEFENDING ourselves against this currently quite common "sport" of turning everything into an anti-military and or anti-US, and at times even anti-Bush, rant.

THIS article was originally posted by JT, referencing numbers that any 12 year old with a bit of logic could see was flawed. But it was posted anyway. This study has less than 9000 women TOTAL in the military based on some 1 in 3 mythical figure. And EACH sexual assualt is done by FELLOW MILITARY MEMBERS.

Nobody is denying that these things occur. But if YOU, paid code-pink contributors, or JT are going to post obviously stupid commentary and present them as "fact".... all of you need to quite trying to back peddle when someone whips out the logic card.

"Naturally, those defending the military can be accused of their own kind of bias in wanting to play down the numbers, whatever they happen to be. The fact is that LOTS of rapes and assaults do occur."

Horsecrap. Look at it this way. Only 2688 sexual assaults last year. If we were to simply "buy in" to this study, that number becomes 75,000, based on current numbers of 229000 female military members.

All reliable reports say 2688 sexual assualts TOTAL occured (male and female). Your referenced study wants us to believe 1/3 of all females, which is 75,000. And you accuse me of "downplaying" the numbers. I accuse the author of deliberatly misleading everyone, and you for supporting it.

But let's look at the "spirit" of the man's question. If the odds are one in 10, that would be 22,900. Which is, I hasten to point out, almost 10 TIMES the actual reported figure. So, the environment that the women is subjecting herself to ACTUALLY is quite safe.

The spirit that is "lost" is not the mans question, or even the seeking logic that looks for a reliable study. What is lost is the sense of RIGHT and WRONG when it comes to reporting facts or at least being responsible with the numbers. And, to get back to your original point, that is what the pro-military crowd has to face CONSTANTLY with these "commentaries". We have no desire to seek middle ground with those who don't toe TRUTH. I'm happy to meet you half way if your numbers and my numbers aren't fabricated, misrepresented, and simply are presented in the correct way.

    Yabits,

    That study is extremely flawed:

The story says "one in three women in the military will be raped BY FELLOW SERVICE MEMBERS during their enlistment". The fact is that while that many may be raped, it is NOT always military members doing it. There were 2688 reported cases of sexual assault TOTAL last year, 70% of which were rape. This number includes male and female victims AS WELL AS perpatrators. This is not the number of victims only. And in any case, the number 2688 does not represent 1/3 of military women, nor does it represent 41% of military women. Either way, this obvious flaw in the presentation of the data makes the entire article suspect. THAT is the point I was making... not that it isn't happening, only that it isn't happening as they present it.

That study also points to a 73% increase in sexual assaults without explaining that 2004 was the first year DOD and the VA collected sexual assualt data for comparision. And EACH YEAR since then, the criteria has changed. It's gone from fiscal year to calendar year. In 2004 and 2005, crude behavior and language ("Hey babe.. nice rack!") did NOT fall under sexual assault, but some report it as such ("Yes, I've been sexually harassed/assaulted"). The goalposts have been moved several times.

And for further proof of flaw.... these statistics are the exact same ones, down to the numbers, that the hardcore feminist websites/lawyers use to press their point. The same group of people that believe ANY sex is rape are the ones that like these stats/numbers.

    Taka,

Your correct in that the the surge was put in place to stabalize things. Your also correct in stating that less violence is not the bar for success. However, the bars to success will NEVER be met if the surge doesn't stabalize things and reduce the violance to a level that is managable by the newly trained and organized IG, IA and IP.

Questions: - Has violence decreased since the surge started? Yes, it has. - Has the Iraqi government been able to make "forward" motion in getting itself setup and stabalized? At least, at a faster clip than at pre-surge levels? Yes, it has. - Has the Iraqi Army taken over more of the security of their nation since the surge commenced? Yes, they have. - Has the Iraqi police responded to their training, care of the surge, and taken over more of the security of their communities and neighboorhoods? Yes, they have

Are they at the level they SHOULD be? No, they are not. But, they are getting there at an increased pace, in large part because of the surge.

The surge IS working. It's not setting land speed records for goal accomplishment, but it IS working in every definable way. Those items that are missing are the pieces of the puzzle that belong to the Iraqi Government.

However... Petraeus said it best. The gains made, and they are verifiable, are easily lost if things don't improve on the political front. I'll lead the pack to say the surge is working right now. I'll also lead the pack in 5 or 6 months without any further changes to state that it is sputtering.
