salesman and politicians, you already know they&re lying, because it&s their job. Pathological liars you can usually tell because they are kind of crazy and they are always wrapped up in some weird sh"t, so just keep away from their sh"t and you&re ok.

It&s the con artists you have to be careful of as they are masqquerading as real ppl, they&re not just lying, they&re acting, and that&s where you&re screwed. Since they&re pros, I have a feeling they have a good handle on and good controol of the cues mentioned in this article.

    kofuku no kagaku-

they didn&t translate the name-- "the science of happiness"

my home country has no shortage of odd religious figures, so I wonT commenT.

kofuku no kagaku has a church near my house. They always give the appearance of overly well-meaning Christians who are/ want to be really Nice. I didn&t know they were into seances and nukes. They have all these fliers about how ppl aren&t happy with their lives and how to find happiness. (haven&t read it but probably has something to do with joining their church.) They also have a political party with a similar sounding name, forgot what exactly.

Beat is one of those ppl who seems to have good understanding of his medium and works hard, not at all an idiot, but yet somehow never makes movies that I actually Like very much. I will probably see it and give it 2 or 3 stars out of 5.

    Branded,

Non-native Jpns vegetables and fruits to me do not exactly "have no taste", but the taste is all sweet, and the original taste of the thing itself is blurry or almost erased. Sweet apples, sweet carrots, sweet tomatoes, sweet everything. However native vegetables and fruits are not so sweet and have distinct tastes. Such as kin-toki ninjin (the red Kyoto carrot), gobo, kabura, Goya, umaina, all the mushrooms and many others. Persimmons fruit (kaki) and various native citrus fruits provide their original myriad of flavors, including bitter and sour as well as sweet. Though I have to admit that in just the past couple of yrs, the kaki has become sweeter and sweeter as have some (but not all) of the citrusses, at the expense of original taste. Sweet must be a fad.

Wouldn't this be too hot in the summer? Is there something about it being wool that makes it good or convenient somehow? Is it really wool?

steve, well I don't know whose house you ate at, but love it or hate it I can't see how it'd taste the same. It is gnrly "blander", however a subtley made taste that is often very different house to house and region to region in my experience. When watching a friend make, or TV cooking show, it is gnrly pretty complicated affair. When first here I had no strong feeling like/dislike, but over time came to like it. However any jpns who eats what I cook, even miso soup says it tastes "strong".

When I first got here I would never buy milk this was because it was 2x the price at home. (And I admit because I also bought drink-yoghurt by accident once and was shocked!) Eventually I realized if I wanted milk from home it would cost me the price of the milk plus a plane ticket, so I bought whatever I wanted locally after that. Veggies and fruits are very expensive if you don't buy directly from a farmer. But better to buy and be healthy.

    Steve, forgot, looks "nice"

How is nice only a part of things since the 60's? I think presentation is a very old aspect of Jpns cuisine. Though perhaps less so inside the average home at times, which was often very poor.

Steve, re the countryside, not sure how what you said contradicts what I wrote. It sounds almost the same. I lived for several years in the country in Japan and now in a large city that is on the verge of rural areas, has rural areas in it. As you said , the ave. Jpns is not so close to nature. However in my experience ppl who are close to the land have no real aversion to different shapes. Cheapness is definitely a desirable aspect. More urban-type folks (which may be living in the "country" if it's a suburb) don't really understand about how growing things look different from each other and want their veggies to look alike.

However, as far as Jpns food being easy to make and tasting the same, I cannot agree. It seems that maybe you have not tried to make, or eaten much real Japanese food. Are you talking about instant Ramen?

I'd say it's a couple of things, but not just an obsession with uniformity.

Jpn has an old culture with a highly developed cuisine. Such highly developed cuisines (in many countries) put a high value on presentation, ie how it looks on the plate, including colors, placement, size and shape. That plus a large percentage of the population living in big urban areas with very little direct contact with the natural world, forests as well as farms, etc. leads to odd ideas of what good food is or should look like. I say presentation plus urbanization. Any Jpns living in Inaka or even semi-inaka is unlikely to have such predispositions, and will consider odd shapes as not odd, just normal (however again, with gift-giving etc., they want to get the best one or most expensive one in order to show respect to the recipient.)

Remember that in many crafts and arts here there is a very direct relation with nature, randomness and deformity, such as Ikebana, Sado etc. Food presentation can also be related to those concepts, though on the common-Joe level it's more just "pretty".

I think I need to see pix of each of the versions being modelled before I can make any final decisions. Front and back, full body and close up. Maybe those who said they are buying these underwear could start a thread of "post your panty" in the JT forums. Then the rest of us could make an informed decision.

When I first started reading in Japanese, I read a lot of miyabe miyuki. Mysteries are very good for learning a foreign language- many reasons, but for one the author wants to trick you and so writes a very obbious easy to follow story so that you will be surprised by the trick at the end. This makes for clear reading as a second language-er. For another thing, the police will go over every old peice of evidence when they uncover a new peice, and they will ruminate about how the peices may be related. So constant review. Miyabe has good plots and interesting characters and a very clear and easy to understand writing style and easy language. (When not writing period pieces). However I grew tired of miyabe.

I don't know if I only found her interesting at the beginning when reading in jpns was a challenge and fun in and of itself, or if I just happened to hit a couple of boring books after I'd already read a few. But I think Dragon was the last I read. I didn't really enjoy it, though I highly recommend her in jpns for a learning reader.

nice sum-up of home of heart, seminar group.

In jpns tabloids it is written up as a new religion cult/ harem of 10+ women for another famous musician, this guy masayo (?) & until recently Toshi. Toshi is coming out in the media about how it is a brainwashing outfit (on the women) and he was used to make money for it. the last ten or so yrs he's put most of his earnings as donations to house of heart, as well as tithing his wife and is apparently deeply in debt, now. Other HOH escapees made comments like they feel for him & are glad he's coming clean about the outfit, but they want him to accept responsibility for being the face of HOH and being a big part of the lure of getting women to join the group.

Don't know if all that's true, but it's what I read on my lunch break the other day.

    Dontknockit-

Great ideas, pls implement them immediately.

Food is the most central after oxygen. It's poisoned, mis-handled, gentetically changed. What are we to do?

I don't know about this beef-tracking system, but I would say that overall food in Japan is safe. There have been various companies lying, but overall the craftsman's ethic is still stronger than the capitalist's ethic here. Well maybe not. The craftsman's ethic is on its last legs, I think, but still stronger than the US where it is nearly non-existant. (Craftsman's ethic= you want to make a good product no matter what. The quality of your product is what you base your name and identity on.)
