Witch hunt!!
Don't take the job Eddie, you'll have great success for the next four years because Japan can only continue getting better, but in the end it will all be measured on WC success, and you'll be lynched.
The reason why New Zealand won the WC this year is because they finally didn't go on a witch hunt after loosing in 2007 and kept Henry at the reins. Japan would have been much wiser to do the same. Now we have to start all over again with Eddie, and then who next after 2015?
Japan was ranked 19th in the world when JK came on board. 4 years later after winning the PNC they were 11th. High enough to get regular games with Scotland and Italy. Get rid of the foriegn players and they'll slip back down to 18-19, and will never improve.

All they have to do is develop players? Wrong. Japan has the stadiums, the rest will take a lot of work. You would know, you were in NZ to see the world cup first hand. There is a lot of work to do between now and 2019, and it's a bigger task for Japan than other host nations because they only reason they have been given the cup is so they can pull off something amazing that will help grow it's popularity here and in Asia.

This article reads like a high school homework project. Basically just a collection of almost random facts and quotes, with slight hints at relating to the title.
Lots of really interesting articles have been in both Japanese and English newspapers in the last few weeks, offering different ideas about the reasons for Rugby's lack of success. Most of them miss the obvious. JRFU has failed to attract big sponsors. Japan's failure is not because of it's National team and it's coaches or the size of the players, or it's Top League system. The problem is that the JRFU has failed to bring the amateur era into the professional.
As the article above mentions, rugby's popularity peak in Japan was in the 80's and early 90's. At that time, rugby was still amateur. Japan however was semi professional. Big companies had their own rugby teams, Kobe Steel, Toyota, IBM etc. Rugby players were given a job with the companies, with a namecard and a desk and came to the office for a couple of hours everyday to do a bit of paperwork. And at lunchtime they left work and went to rugby practice. They were offered good money, and Japan attracted some decent gaijin talent. Rugby was cool, company presidents went to dinner parties in Roppongi and talked about their rugby and soccer teams, like they were Ferraris and Lamborghinis. When players retired from playing, they just stopped going to practice and hung around the company until they retired, doing a few odd jobs, but basically having a free ride till retirement. The companies had money to spare so it didn't matter.
Then the early 90's came, and the rest of the world turned pro, and the JRFU didn't make any big changes. Meanwhile the Japanese economy collapsed, the professional teams are still company teams, half of them have gone because the companies don't have money waste anymore. J League took over as the 2nd most popular sport behind baseball, and Rugby bosses were still talking about the good old days.
And now we've got the world cup in 2019, and rugby 7's in the Olympics. A great chance for the JRFU to make some serious changes. They don't even have to be creative, just copy the J league model. Professional sport requires money. Money controls everything a team, or a sports union wants to do, it is the same as a business. JRFU is failing to attract sponsors. Look at the sponsors Rugby has. Toyota, NEC, Panosonic, Toshiba, etc. Big old companies. Now look at the companies that have bought baseball teams in the last 10 years. Rakuten, Yahoo, Softbank, and this week Mobage bought Yokohama Bay Stars. New companies that are cool. How can we do that? Is the big question that JRFU has to ask itself at the next board meeting. Unfortunately, the board meeting is probably held at the same sushi bar in Roppongi that they've been going to since the 80's.

It's culture, why the need to get rid of it? Your arguments against it are just like saying, 'why do the Hawaiin's give lei to people when they arrive at the airport?. It's dumb, I don't lie it. That's not the way the rest of the world does it, so stop doing it'. If you don't want a lei around your neck, then don't go to Hawaii. But your missing out. That's what culture is all about.
That's the way the pacific nations play rugby, we want to keep it like that, so if other countries don't want it, then don't play with us. All Blacks are the money drawer for World rugby, so no country is going to refrain from playing them over the haka. That's a good thing, because it means the haka will stay, and other pacific nations will also be able to keep their challenges as well. If you are not from a pacific nation, you will probably not understand what it means to us without some effort to understand our culture.
It's part of our culture, whether we are Maori, Polynesian or European or Asian or whatever. Ali Williams (the dude that you see in the front of the haka) is a kiwi, he was born and raised in New Zealand. His skin is white, but that has nothing to do with his culture. Even the whitest primary schools in New Zealand have kapahaka groups, and many schools have pasifika groups nowadays too. Haka is a part of our culture that we are extremely proud of, so why not just try to understand it instead of jumping to negative conclusions about it. Culture is disappearing all over the world because of views like the ones on this board. You don't have to like the haka, but it's immature to say that is is wrong or doesn't have a place.
Culture has no place in sport? Like anthems, and uniforms, and exchanging handshakes etc. Sport was born from culture.
Spend 20 minutes reading about the different haka of the pacific nations sometime, you might even enjoy watching one next time.

Yes, the "act" is that they are a "Rock" band. Besides the fact that they have a couple of guitars and a drum set, they are about as close to Pop as any pop group. Listen carefully to any of U2's songs of the past 15 years and it's Pop, pop and more Pop.

Calmdown:
Yup, most kiwis will be with you there, it wasn't the best Rugby WC final ever. Doesn't compare to SA vs NZ in '95, or Eng vs Aus in '03. Both games going in extra time etc. But it was the best ever for us kiwis. Beating our nemesis France, and winning a game when we were in big big trouble, those two aspects make it such a big win. Plus, home tournament, and been such a long time, so makes it all the more special. We aren't gonna come down from our high for a long time.
Yup, the boys sure had paralysis, but they won. Cheaters? Yeah right, nothing even worth talking about. There's always one side that gets away with a bit more than the other in Rugby. Nothing worth talking about though. A controversy free final.
A certain Queen song has been playing in the back of my head all day. We... are ... the ....champions...

Whoooohoooooo!!?! Because we got the cup back!
Haha, listen to all you sore loses. Weepu choked?? Like he cares! He's got a gold medal round his neck! It's not golf, it's rugby, team effort.
All Blacks a carbon copy of the Wallabies!? Haa!! Big difference. Abs have been the best team in the world for the last 4 years and the form team of the tournament. Aussie lost to Ireland, and even their own fans think they are crap. We deserve to finally win a cup. France have had their fair share of blind eyes from the ref over the years. So let us have our time in the spotlight. Actually, who cares, we won!
sssshhhhhhh, what's that noise? Sounds like car horns? Oh, it's us kiwis parting!!! Whoooooooohoooooooooo!!

Great, a whole article about one team, and that team didn't even finish 1st or 2nd.
Central League finale??!!!?? Oh, you mean the Giants last game for the Giants in regular season that didn't actually mean anything because the finish in 3rd place if they lose or win.
Meanwhile, back in the rest of the world, hello, aYakult still have a game, Hanshin still have 2, and Hiroshima still have 4.

bwaaa ha ha !!
Lots of humour on this board today! Ten years from now, what do you think people will remember 2011 for? The Trin nations? Aussie winning the wooden spoon by a drop kick? No, they remember it for 3 things. Aussie choking, Cooper's adventure, and wither France or NZ winning the world cup.
Burakumindes,
I hear all the choking specialists are all exhausted after having to tend to all the Wallabies and supporters at eden park last week.
Oh, Congratulations on beating Wales! Good game, both teams came to play, and Aussie finally got it's scrum together.

Aussie are this decade's chokers, that's for sure!
In London, they should ditch the Bronze Final, and instead play an all star game with players from different countries, coached by a guest coach. Winners get 30,000 dollars each, losers get nuthin. IRB is so boring for a professional sports organisation.

Of course soccer is more popular, there are so few rules that any idiot can understand it. Which is why most people that are really interested in sport get so bored with soccer. What are there, 2 rules? Kick ball in goal, and don't touch with your hand.
Still, gotta love the party around a big soccer game. Kick, scream, kick, scream, kick, scream, goal, scream, kick scream. And they even do expert analysis during the half time!
I remember back during the 2002 world cup, in a bar somewhere packed with people watching Japan playing some other team, you could hardly move or hear, and it was half girls. During a quiet period, the ref blew the whistle for an offside, and a girl near me said something about not understanding the offside thing. Within minutes there were people all around agreeing with her (mainly girls) about how they didn't get the offside rule either, and how complicated it was! No wonder they rugby can't get a following here.

As a kiwi I've gotta add to the debate.
This Aussie team has a few goofs in it, but I spent a lot of time reading the media leading up till the game, and I didn't see much trash talk. Australia have been very very gracious in defeat. I even heard a few commentators saying they will support Wales next week because they deserve the win more. There is no way you'd ever hear a Kiwi saying that. It's sports, nothing wrong with rivalry, Aussie and NZ hate each other when it comes to sport, but at the same time there is a big contingent of workers in NZ right now helping us with the oil cleanup, and Aussie were first there in March when Christchurch needed help, same as NZ will always be there to help Aussie.
But meanwhile, whooooohoooo, ALL BLACKS!!!!!!! Cooper choked !! Wooohoooo!
What scares me is Cooper's comments today. He really lookis like he is hurting. I hope he doesn't learn from this and become too good!
ALL BLACKS!!
