Doesn't seem like an over-reaction at all. They are too quick to apologise. It's not like they were held up overnight - 3 hours isn't that much, compared with spreading a flu epidemic. I think NZ did all right.

@anglootaku: "EL&IC" is not per se a "depressing" film. It has sad aspects, but the ultimate message is not of doom and misery. Watch it, and then you can categorise it and comment on its quality.
To not make profit from a sad historical event, we'd have to cancel 80% or more of all films. What an awful thought, anyway - "Let's ONLY make happy films!" There'd be nothing worth watching after a few years.

I saw this film the other day and really enjoyed it, despite the sad storyline. I didn't know beforehand what it was about - if I had, I might not have wanted to watch it, but am glad I did. t does have certain unrealistic aspects, mostly pertaining to the boy's precociousness (but that's supposed to be explained away by his condition). I kind of see what Daldry means, he doesn't mean films about 9/11, but given that it's been such an enormous part of that past decade and the cause of a lot of world events, you'd think that more films would at least mention it - it's touched and affected so many people in so many countries.

"Down tools" is a perfectly fine expression for "stop working"; "seize" (means "grasp") in place of "cease" (means "stop") is not.

This interviewing style goes back at least to JHS students applying for high schools. I've been there, watched them do it. Everything is rehearsed, down to the very detail of knocking on the interview room door. Waste of time (and money). The school / company probably has already decided (or easily can decide) who they'll take. Good article, this!

I think these young men are doing a sterling job, good for them. it's a shame that the focus of the discussion about this picture has shifted. In my opinion, it shows how a thankless task can be made fun. It does not comment on, (nor does the photographer intend it to I hope) on these young men's sexuality. How they look is irrelevant to how they act - although their actions are admirable, as are their outfits.

I would have to disagree with this, Godan. I can't comment on your experience of health checks in Japan, but I have had "patient counseling" quite a few times, and after I told them I smoked I have always asked how many / how often I smoke per day; how long I've smoked; and have been presented with photos of cancer-ridden lungs. If the smoker doesn't want to quit, what's the doctor to do?

@Yubaru - a lot of media sites, whatever country they are based in, often speak in US$, so as not to confuse their American readers. I hope that JT is not doing that. 10,000 yen strikes me as a very small amount of money to have in a cigarette machine, too.

I'm not too pleased with the translation - a bit repetitive, using the verb "consider" twice. In Japanese the word play is pleasing, but not so much in English,
