Cheers for the article update Kronos. They do give a few examples of errors, which seem to be less in grammar, and more in vocabulary , and mishearing / misunderstanding the speaker.

That pervious post of mine came out very stream-of-consciousness. I did try to make paragraphs! Piglet: where do you live? because in Nagoya, I have none of the problems you refer to. And I've taken a fair few cabs unnecessarily short distances in my time.

Piglet, really, do you think that they wait there for hours without cab fare? You do realise that that's not the 20 same cabs, parked out there all day. They actually move up the line quite quickly. I was talking to a cabbie a while ago, he said business was really bad, to the point of one day making only 1000yen. In these times, you'd not want to spend more on petrol than you earn. Paying them on commission? Yeah, a manager would do that.

So you'd rather they wasted gas and money, and polluted the air more, randomly driving aroud loking for you, instead of waiting at one of the many designated taxi ranks?
I can appreciate that someone with a leg injury might prefer to stand and wait for a cab, but otherwise, Mohammed, go to the mountain - it isn't that far.

I agree that the idling engines are a disgrace.
I also sympathise with the cabbie's lot- a lot of them work long hours, are far from home, and aren't spring chickens any more. Let him nap.

5 ages in one short article! Doesn't the article's author know anything about these people other than their DOB?

@lovenot: what would you do after months of hard training (which would've been mentally as well as physically draining)? A spot of Tarkovsky? A night at the opera, (ooh, Wagner)? Dip into one of Chomsky's books? Me, I'd want fried chicken and cheesecake, gin, and a hot bath. Does that make me ignorant? Not at all, just tired.
"nama" has a number of translations; I would imagine she means fresh food? I'd also imagine that they've been on a strict diet in the time leading up to the World Cup, and since she and her team won, I think they can all do whatever the hell they want.

Right. So according to you, our 2 options are suck it up or leave?
I choose to stay, but to avoid buying food which I suspect is contaminated. and if i end up buying only imported food, then that's what I'll do!
Posted in: Beef, milk, tea, spinach and other vegetables have been contaminated due to the Fukushima nuclear crisis. How much worse do you think this is going to get? For example, do you think rice will be affected?

Now I want to know what the Japanese for "I'm gutted" is.

I apreciate that she says “It’s human nature to want more,” but I can already see the weeping and accusations if they don't get the gold. What's the point of putting pressure on so early and heavily - why not revel in this victory a bit longer?

Smaller than a laptop, so easier to carry around. But I shan't be buying SONY any time ever - their stuff breaks down within a couple years (I'm talking about audio products mainly). This is way over-priced. I have a region-free 10 or 11-inch, swivel-screen, chargeable player that I got off Amazon for a tenner, and it works a charm

What an odd question - why shold rice be exempt? because of its special, magical, Japanese-staple-food powers?

Not very reassuring, is it. No wonder things don't change very quickly around here!
Posted in: People try not to pay too much attention to what is happening at Fukushima. It is as if they are looking through a kind of filter trying to think, 'that can't happen here.'

Quite right too, that she, and the others, be arrested. Disgraceful and illegal behaviour and knowledge of said behaviour. She must have known.

Poor women - to have lost their husbands, and then have their life plans taken away by paper-pushers. Out of curiosity, does this law only go one way, or is there an equivalent for widowers?

I make a point of going on the rowboats at Ueno Park whenever I'm in Tokyo - a good boatlake is hard to find. A bonus is watching the other rowers, many of whom don't quite get it, and row the blunt end forwards...

No wonder people keep topping themselves - it must be so stressful that you'd just want to lock yourself in a dark room for a month. Except that a lot of them don't have any rooms of their own. And of course, regardless what the govt. tells you, you can't really believe them. I hope everyone stay strong, with faith that things *will *get better.
Posted in: We are exhausted. We have to look at every food item we eat, we only use bottled water for cooking, and on top of that every day we confront this nagging dilemma whether it's really safe for our children to stay in Fukushima or not.

I voted no. Would a war criminal be included in such a time limit?
