Where does the mayor himself (and his family) live? Does anyone know?

I just saw the US version the other day (after having seen and enjoyed the Swedish original) - I enjoyed both. The US version is probably a little harder to follow if you haven't read the book. Both women do an excellent job.

Which bit was the failure - the murder or the suicide?

Moderator: The son's suicide, according to police.

A rationally, well balanced mentally healthy individual would not go out and commit a random attack. (Samantha Zoe Aso) And they don't in other countries (American Foreigner)

AF: Are you delusional? Especially given your supposed nation or origin - land of the random gun-totin' attack.

A good article, worthwhile. Wish JT could have something like this (also restaurant reviews and the like) done for other major cities in Japan.

It's illegal to smoke tobacco under 20 - surely if kids want to roll marjoram into rolling paper, they can! I've heard of these "herb shops", they sell stuff which has slipped under the radar of the drug listings, but can still pack quite a punch. It's a funny country, innit. It's only about a decade ago or so that Village Vanguard was selling mushrooms!

God, this whole thread, all these comments, the initial article, it's deeply sad, disheartening, depressing, and just plays straight into that wretched old chestnut that makes Japan, and living here, out to be somehow special and more different than any other new place or situation we find ourselves in throughout our lives. Everything takes adapting to, a tweaking of behaviour. Only a lonely, unhappy fool expects the world to adapt to them. The fact that taking off shoes indoors even has to be mentioned... and chopsticks too (used by how many countries in Asia again? )... I find the self-enforced isolation of some of the posters specially saddening. Depriving your children of a full life experience of another country, not allowing them to form their own memories and opinions, because of your own preconceptions and half-baked ideas... What a shame. There's nothing I'm prouder of than having the opportunity to be raised in a bilingual household - it's enriched my life no end. This whole "us vs. Them" mentality makes some of you sound like absolute tinfoil hatters, quite honestly. I repeat, it's such a shame.

One hour train delay, no? People calling work to postpone meetings, students to advise their teachers, workers at dept. stores and other shops which would be left un- / understaffed as a result of the delay... I can see why there would be an increase in calls.

Pinch of salt if that. Since the majority of pople n japan are A (they say), just take a look at the A characteristics, diet etc., to see how these "results" are skewed.

The comedy group Namikibashi released a DVD of sketches of spoof cultural education. It's called "The Japanese Tradition", or 日本の形 and it is pretty damn funny. Check them out on Youtube.

"her beau"? What is this, the 1890s? They have something like 5 kids together, I think they've moved beyond courting.

I have no doubt that Ms Ono has given a lot of money already to support Japan in its crisis; quite probably she just hasn't felt the need to publicise it. This is a charity concert, which requires publicity, to get bums on seats.
The posters here who are mocking her, and knocking her actions - why??

I read recently (in the GW I think) that 85% (ish) of adoptions in Japan are of adult males, so that they can carry on the family business, name or whatever. I don't think that adoption of infants is very common at all. I feel nothing but pity for this woman who, as some posters (the ones who actually read the artcile properly and thought about it) pointed out, had nowhere to go but a hostel, with her child. Terribly sad.

Oh good god people, get over yourselves. So you're getting old, and have been around longer than this guy. So what? Since this idea has been around a while and yet hasn't been implemented, why not comment on possible reasons? and not just react in a stompy, door-slamming and rather immature "if the locals dont care about their own well being, why shud I." kind of way!

25% off is not a bad deal. I could claim 4 of these, and only 2 of them require a little effort. Now, where's my hairbrush?
