Basing the country's decision on a national poll - not a good idea. If we accepted the results of a poll, Japan would have no organ donation and jury duty would have been deemed too confusing (like adopting summer Time is). I am against capital punishment - I think that there have been far too many cases of wrongful imprisonment - not just accidental, but with the knowledge of the authorities (forged documents, forced confessions) - to trust that th right person is being punished.

Over 100 stores in Tokyo - were they anywhere else in Japan?
Posted in: Tesco failed to imprint itself on this fragmented, hyper-crowded and competitive consumer market. Japan's notoriously conservative and fussy shoppers simply had too many other choices.

Just from reading today's Yom, it's clear that in a typhoon you're damned if you do and damned if you don't - one person killed in their own home as it was washed away in a landslide, one person killed as they left their house heading for the safety of an evacuation center... Sometimes in a natural disaster, no way is the right way to keep safe.

Spinach is quite nicely prepared in Japan - lightly steamed (I think; or is it pan-fried?), with sesame seeds. It doesn't look like slop, and doesn't smell bad. I've grown to really like spinach.

It's all in the preparation. If mums are offering up eggplant in long slices, in all its sliminess, no wonder they don't like it. It was only when I started steaming vegetables and fish, and roasting chicken,a few years ago that I learned that you do not have to cook food until all the colour, crunch and flavour has leached out of it. Grilled eggplant is nice.

I used to think typhoon were fun and harmless, too, back when I was new in the country and had no experience of their danger. I gradually learned that typhoons are dangerous: property is damaged, trees fall down, large objects fly around and hit people, and people die. Oh, and there was that one time about 11 years ago ('99?) when my kitchen ceiling caved in, while I was at home. These people who downplay typhoons have dumb luck.

Oh, the poor, poor boy. He couldn't face going back to school for the new term, and obviously the homeroom teacher had done nothing to reassure him. It's easy enough for adults to tell children what to do, how to behave in times of trouble (ignore it; stand up for yourself; laugh it off; try to make friends with them, etc.) but we forget how fragile teenagers are, how fragile we used to be... Too late for an investigation, Principal. what you going to do, give a few lectures at assembly, maybe detention? Useless.

Cleo - I have a few male person friends here (he-he) who rave about it, as an art form. I don't get it myself, and passed on the opportunity to see a shibori 'exhibition'. Not my cup of tea. It's mutton tied up as lamb.

" a female person"? What an interesting choice of words to follow on directly from your use of "women". I wonder how many women do shibori, and do they mostly do it using men?

The membership price is very revealing (if it's correct) - women pay so little because chances are good that they'll be the ones being tied up, and therefore not learn very much about the art? Or is it just that men are more likely to quit after a couple of classes?

I know it's done a lot cos I see the pictures on FB all the time, and not just by women. I imagine Mixi is worse. It is very odd, because most of the pictures are of very commonplace, sometimes rather dull plates of food.I could understand it if it were some sumptuous feast, but not a plate of noodles.
