Absolutely sick behaviour in any country and culture. People without bomb making skills and no real training or budgets will resort to this kind of terrorism. It is easy to pick out soldiers anywhere: short hair, physical bearing, youth, accents different than locals, etc. What will change for the bases in the UK for now is they may implement a buddy system, maybe a curfew and everyone
s situational awareness will be on "11" - for a while.....until it doesnt happen and time passes. And now watch all the ignorant whites hate groups react. Rinse, repeat. Tragic.Posted in: Anti-Islamist protests flare after British soldier butchered near London barracks

I thought everyone knew by now that the 1st class and business flyers are subsidising everyone else. I
ve flown 1st class about a dozen times and business about twice that (on someone elses dime) in my life but was quite happy to enjoy the benefits (lounge, food, wine, etc), including lots of baggage. Of course, the weight of luggage (and passengers) adds to take off weight so it is tied with safety to some extent. When I know the load factor of a flight is not full I`ll often be able to get out of paying for extra baggage. One big tip is to try to fly as often as possible with one airline and partner airlines to build up miles. That will help you as you smile and ask for something special at check-in. Those ground staff have a lot of leeway...always keep your cool and be the nicest person in line. Been bumped up many times :)Posted in: Do you think airlines are sneaky about fuel surcharges, fees for extra baggage and other charges for various services?

In the land of salarymen passed out in their own barf on the train platform at 8pm on a Monday, this article is like reading about people living in an alternate universe.

This looks worthy of watching on a transpacific flight ( free & not bothered if I slumber) My favorite film of his was when he played Joe Pistone aka Donnie Brasco.

With 5 colleagues who are lifeguards or at least work at a pool and would presumably be familiar with basic rescue techniques? Was alcohol involved? If not, this is bizarre.

But really - what was the point of the video - unless you are pre-pubescent only one thing "comes" to mind.

Awesome. This young man is a rare example of someone who chose to get involved & folled through & remains humble). I've caught two pervs on the subway here in Tokyo - if you have situational awareness you'll notice it happening.

Why would a couple on a date be concerned with "scholarly and scientific facts" regarding the cuisine they might choose for the date? Has this guy ever been on a date? The type of food definately factors in where people go but most couples are concerned with atmosphere, location and cost regarding a particular restaurant. If a fairly new couple, the guy is probably aiming for something a bit expensive and more on the quiet and romantic side of things. Italian and French offer the chance to drink wine, which is a draw in itself as a lot of women in their late 20
s and 30s are into wine.Posted in: We hope this endeavor serves as a catalyst to have couples on dates say, 'Let's have Japanese cuisine' rather than debate over whether to have French or Italian for dinner.

Somewhat similar case here in Japan that took place in Niigata in 1999. A girl was kidnapped in 1990 and kept hostage for those 9 years. Police incompetence was a factor and his mother lived with him but "didn`t know". What are your neighbours up to?

Catchy, eye-grabbing stuff - always catches my 4 yr olds attention. Perhaps even more than most pop music, her "music" is like eating cotton candy. Not a lot there afterwards and once you eat it, you won`t be getting more too soon.

Gee, can you say Ponzi? If something sounds too good to be true, then...stay away. As the Romans put it so aptly, "caveat emptor".

Certainly expertly produced, I do enjoy it to some extent, occasionally find it a bit depressing. JT should be a sponsor. Never have so many smoked so constantly, making dinner, eating meals, meetings, every waking moment....

What matters is her ability to quickly get the President`s ear, the State Dept has professionals in the embassy who actually run everything. The Japanese will appreciate the name recognition and her access.
Posted in: I thought it was an April Fool’s joke when I first heard about it. Our economic and national security are based on goodwill toward Japan. I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy becoming ambassador to, say, Barbados. But Japan is too important for somebody with no experience.

How about "viking" / bikingu for buffet? I guess smorgasbord would get mangled in katakana. I was invited to a Rotary Int
l party many years ago and informed that it would be "viking-style". Since I was a JET in the countryside whod recently arrived, the mental images this conjured up were incompatible with what Id seen so far but I went with the flow. I dressed casually and wore a Swedish t-shirt (blue & yellow) that I happened to own. After a 30 minute drive into the hills, we pulled up to a swanky country club and walked inside to see ice sculptures and a fancy spread of food. "Whats viking-esqe about this?", I thought. Later I was asked to make a speech about internationalisation with no prior warning - but that`s another story.Posted in: 20 words of English origin that Japanese people often mistake for real thing

Interesting, uniquely unique Japan...ad nauseam. My father traveled globally for work for 2 decades and always brought us back something from those places, sometimes candy or food, sometimes other gift / souvenir thingys. When younger, we loved the chocolate from Belgium or Switzerland the most. What is clearly different here in Japan is that there is a sense of obligation to bring things to your office and co-workers, besides family. It can get ridiculous and cause stress at the end of a trip.
