Thinking a bit more about this, I conceed one plausible possiblity for this relationship other than exclusively employee/ employer. She might have been a con-person out to blackmail him. Maybe that's what MFA is trying to get at.

there was not enough information to ascertain the nature of their relationship at the time of the incident

But he was the Ambassador, the senior executive of the Japanese Embassy in charge of her employment. He was the employer, she was the employee. The nature of their relationship is crystal clear. What's more, he has diplomatic inmmunity. Is the MFA suggesting that there can reasonably be something other than a formal employee/employer relationship in these circumstances? If the story as JT reports it is true, and the MFA recognises there is "some truth" behind the allegations, then the MFA has deliberately, using all the intellect and commonsense it has, made an official decision to go on the record as telling a lie...(nature of relationship unclear). And it's there for the whole world to see.

They will probably mix strongly contaminated rice with slightly contaminated rice. The same things happened in Europe two and a half decades ago after the Chernobyl accident

So when I do my takikomi gohan in the rice cooker there will be highly radioactive grains of rice and benign grains of rice. I don't want those highly radiaoactive grains in contact with cells in my esophagus, duodenum, small intestine and large intestine. Such contact sharply increases the risk of cancerous cells developing. Maybe I should eat in the dark in the hope of finding the radioactive grains glowing.

TPP will force the modernization and efficient operation of Japan's agriculture. Japan has a lot to offer world in agriculture, just as it has done in electronics and automotive. The current closed market is blocking rationalization and innovation, but there is now the opportunity for change.

Japan (and this especially means the Japanese MFA and Prime Minister's office) needs to think very carefully about the perceptions of the rest of the world towards some of its actions. It seems to be heeding international opinion about cleaning up its act on official visits to Yaskukuni Shrine. Why persist in losing so much international goodwill to protect a few unnecessary (and subsidized) jobs in the whaling ports?? This seems like almost a sort of national masochism.

This is going to be interesting. In Ukraine after Chernobyl they had the option of making several hundred square kilometers off limits for the next couple of hundred years. Plenty of space.
But Japan doesn't think that way. Here it is "decontamination." The current emphasis is on scraping off the top layer of soil in schoolgrounds (then where to put that?) , and washing away the other areas, which reduces local radiation readings. But the radiation has to go somewhere. Washed away it either enters waterways and reaches the sea and enters the marine ecosystem, or else it permeates more deeply into the ground. The radiation does not disappear until it decays naturally over many years. "Decontamination" means removing it from obvious places to less obvious places, but it's still there.

The headline "Return Trip" is strange. Can JT provide an explanation? These people are definitely not returning where they came from.

Thanks your comments. I was recalling the bit about the franchise fee being too high, and I might be mistaken on that point. However many articles from late 2009 make clear that the decision was made by Zensho, not by Wendy's Arby's International, and that profit considerations (return on investment and intense competiton) were the main factor.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/02/business/global/02wendys.html

This still suggests to me that Wendy's/Arby's Intrernational misread the potential of the Japanese market and were greedy in their target for the contract re-negotiation. Will Wendy's in Japan ever return to 71 stores? Time will tell.....

Zensho opted out because Wendy's/Arby's International wanted a hefty increase in the Japan franchise fee. Seems like a very bad decision on the part of Wendy's/Arby's. It will now take a while to get back to speed here. Perhaps in Japan Wendy's will now need to become more of an up-market product in choice locations only.

Interesting that it has taken 3 weeks for this news to emerge. Is there no automatic reporting of major air incidents in Japan? Was ANA trying to avoid bad publicity prior to the 787 launch, in which case they failed spectacularly.

The problem is that the bureaucrats in Beijing are unable to control what various military and quasi-military groups around the country are doing, and they know it.

What's the fuss?? This is the standard role for a politician here. Want to fill in the coastline to create new land for a factory? Need to build a golf course on the foothills of that mountain? Need a new nuclear power station? Need to put up an apartment block in a residential neighborhood? The local pollie willl fix the zoning regulations, for a price, of course. But if he gets the money then he can pay for his re-election campaign. And more re-zoning, and everyone will be happy!!

Japan can show the way by upholding its already pledged support for the Doha Development Round involving the reduction of tariffs and barriers on agricultural trade.

I think the idea tends to makes sense. If the burden of Fukushima residents can be lightened in this way I'm all for it. There must be remote and non-productive storage locations in Hokkaido, for example. However the technical hurdles of safely transporting and ultimately isolating the waste will be high and perhaps prohibitive.

Unless Noda includes Ozawa people the party will fracture and he's finished. So the best way to include Ozawa people is to choose senior incompetents.

They need someone who is capable of looking after the interests of the country as a whole, rather than this narrow-minded nonsense of rotating leaders of different political factions into the Prime Ministership. Leadership of the country is more than working to siphon off budget disbursements to help with individuals’ re-election campaigns! There is no-one strong enough to be a Shigeru Yoshida or a Kakuei Tanaka. But Maehara has the national interest in mind.

tokyokawasaki: Americans typically make claims based on assumptions, so why should Fukushima be any different.

Maybe he was making the point at the time that Japan was providing inadequate information, so that the only choice was to make worst case assumptions. 50 miles rather than 30km!
