"As of Sept 1 the United States had 1,790 warheads"

How many MIRV? How many missles does this equate to? If a country decides to attack the US, do you think they could intercept some or all of these retaliatory strikes? And how many of them would be destroyed in that first strike? Do I anticipate it happening? No, not really. No one is stupid enough to pull the trigger on a nuclear war. But part of the reason for that is the MAD doctrine. And what Obama is suggesting is throwing that away, while allowing others enough to destroy the US several times over. That does not make me sleep any safer at night.

Again, I disagree with 99.9% of what comes out of the man's mouth and I think he would be a dangerous president but I give him points for consistency. Neither Romney nor Gingrich can hope to touch that in a million years.

The reason I like him more then Romney, is that very point. He has stayed consistent to conservative core principals. Note, not perfect, but consistent. I myself, as a conservative, agree with most of what the man says. And while I think Romney would make a better President, we could do a lot worse then Santorum.

of course they do - simply looking for reasons to justify their upcoming strike on the country and the ongoing series of assasinations of Iranian scientists

Well, that and the evidence strongly points to Iran...

This can best be summed up in one word... Idiotic.

Lets put this in perspective shall we? When it comes down to it, the Federal Government has only 1 responsibility. That is defense. Everything else, from social security, to the nanny state food police, is extra. And according to Obamas latest budget, he wants to massively cut defense spending, while maintaining the increase and growth of government in almost all entitlement areas. In other words, his goal and vision for the US is to turn it into nothing more then another European style welfare state.

So, getting back to the primary role of the Federal Government, no other weapon serves as a greater deterrent for less cost than nuclear weapons. IE It costs less to build and maintain these systems, then it does to fund a whole heck of a lot of other things. So, where is the sense of rendering the US defenseless? Of drawing down the US arsenal so that if we are attacked, we would no longer be able to respond? If you cut sufficiently, as Obama seems determined to do, then the 'triad' they talk about above, will be undercut, and rendered too weak to be effective. At which point, we should all start bowing to China.

Heh, another Obama flop of a budget heading for the circular file.

Well, give the man some credit. Even if the budget is idiotic, and has no support from either party, at least the President is fulfilling his legal obligation to submit a budget. Contrast this with Dirty Harry, who hasn't submitted on in years...

Hopefully this will lead to planes being more effiicient (the best planes nowadays still use as much as half the fuel they used when jet planes got introduced) We are still using a 150 year old car engine design and are only now starting with all the electric and hybrid stuff just because gasoline was too cheap too long.

Yes, Gas is too cheap. Make sure that when you go to buy it, you get the bill, and then hand the people you bought it from, twice what they ask for ok. I'm sure that will make you happy, after all, then you'll be paying what you should have been paying all along right?

If there was slime it would have been splurged in 2008. Republicans are far more adept at smear campaigns and screching attack ads.

lol, you apparently didn't pay attention in 2008, when the media had nothing but glowing praise for Obama. Indeed, one so-called journo admitted he felt a tingle up his leg, listening to his messiah preach. There was no vetting of Obama by the media. All that mattered to them was that he was black, gave a good speech, and had a D by his name. They were in the tank for him from day 1. What Breitbart was saying, was that they will do the job the mainstream media refused to do 4 years ago.

And regarding smear campaigns, and screeching attack ads, I have to say, that while Republicans have had practice, the Dems have long since mastered the art, and lets not forget the class warfare, and racism cards in their playbook which they play at every opportunity.

Sorry, but he's a nut. A likeable nut, but still a nut. Even if I happen to agree with about 70% of what he says, that 30% is what kills his chances.

“The Diaoyu Islands and adjacent islets have always been part of Chinese territory, and China exercises its sovereignty over them,” foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in a statement.

They forgot to add. Its always been part of Chinese territory, ever since 1970 when it was discovered there might be oil and gas there,. Much the same way Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines belong to China

They have radicalized the Right, marginalized their moderates, and shafted the GOP's chances of winning back the WH.

Heh, cause nothing is more radical in Washington, then fiscal sanity. Yep, those crazy Tea Party folks. Insisting that we should balance the budget... So funny.

It's very odd how conservatives hold Gingrich up as one of their own when they guy was having an affair with a staffer while lambasting Clinton for doing the same. Gingrich isn't a conservative, he's an opportunist. But people are too ignorant to figure that out....

I agree. Which is why I have long since realized that I cannot support Newt. I cannot support Romney, and Paul is a nutcase on foreign policy. Meaning theres only Santorum left, and he gives me the willies. But he's the only one left. Meaning I'll be voting for him when my primary rolls around.

you can call it whatever you want. they're mormons. they won't cut your head off or blow up your car if you make light of their beliefs. at worst they would probably send you a streudel.

Heh, ok that made me laugh.

hadn't thought of that. but the hypocrites of the left obviosuly have. will they ever be able to admit it to themselves? so much for all the hype and hoopla about diversity with these people.

Lets be honest here. Theres more then enough hypocrisy to go around, on both the left and right.

Care to let us know who these folks are? Or are they just imaginary folk in your head??

Find a thread on immigration here in Japan. Surely you can remember some of them. Maybe the Iranian girl who along with her family wanted to stay in Japan. If I remember the story, the family was deported back to Iran, but they decided to let the girl stay and finish High School. Not sure how far back these threads are archived, but I remember some really vicious posts in that and other threads, and by some of the usual suspects here on this board.

In my view, Mitt's massive wealth makes him a less compelling character than many of his forebears, though he's not entirely at fault having inherited so much from his dad.

He actually earned just about everything he's made. It wasn't given to him. Yes he came from a wealthy and politically connected family, but he also worked hard to get where he is. He didn't just become CEO of Bain Capital one day. He had to work his way up.

Yes, I condemn conservatives for wanting illegals out of the US, and I have no problem condemning conservatives who want illegals out of Japan -- the exact same thing. What's your point?

Smith, my comment wasn't directed specifically at you, but rather at some others of your type. You probably know who I'm talking about. They agree with you politically. They think its horrible that conservatives want to deport illegals in the US, however when it comes to threads on illegal immigration in Japan, its amazing how many of these same people strongly speak out against it. Saying they should be deported etc.

So when they baptize someone, they change their religions without asking?

Actually, my understanding, is that it is being done for those who have passed on. They though can choose whether to accept it or not. So, no one is changing religions without their consent. Besides since they're dead, does it really matter to anyone except their families?

Molenir, once again wrong on fact. Biden is not a millionaire. Easy to verify that.

Heh, yeah Zurc, it is easy. Do a bit of research first next time eh?

Mittens made nothing while amassing a huge fortune. He produced nothing. He made money by moving money around. Of course he loves capitalism because he is a parasite on it. Venture capital is one thing but LBOs, where Bain made its big money, is quite another.

So, in addition to exposing your unwillingness to do any research, you expose your bias against capitalism. Apparently, being a CEO means you're doing nothing. And he didn't start as CEO, he worked his way up. He has been very successful, but hell even yabits admits he has had to work hard to get where he is. Do a bit of research Zurc, you may prefer Obama, but at least have the decency to find out who the opponent is, before just denouncing him.

O.K. I have to call bullsh*t on this. To call the OccupyWallstreet movement people rapists and murders is pretty low, even for you. And of course you have ZERO verifiable facts to back up your claim! When do you ever?

Hmm, ok I actually agree with you on this. Calliing the OWS movement rapists and murderers is about like calling the Tea Party Racists. That there are murderers and rapists involved there, is a matter of record, but the vast majority of them, those primarily involved, are definitely not.

America is becoming less free all the time. More and more permits are needed for everything. More and more inspections and reports needed before things can get done. Costs go up, the size of government goes up, and every day more freedom is chipped away. Its all being done in the name of security.

Only conservatives could hatch something so embedded in fantasy.

And only loons could believe something that has been proven to work, is a fantasy. I find it interesting, that some of the same people who condemn conservatives for wanting the illegals out of the US, have no problem saying the exact same thing when it comes to people here in Japan illegally. You know who you are.

Newt needs to look at what happened in AZ when they passed (or tried to pass) their illegal immigration laws that allowed the police to question if they were in the country illegally. About 100,000 illegal immigrants left Arizona after the state passed a law in 2007 that enhanced penalties on businesses that hired them, according to the Department of Homeland Security. (From a USA Today article), and some were doing the same with the recent law that was enacted in 2010. Same thing happened in Alabama when they enacted tougher laws.

I'm from Arizona, it works. If the Federal Government got tough on illegals. If they made it more economically viable for them to go back to their home country, then to stay in the US, then yes, this plan would work. No, not all of them would leave. But many of them would. If additionally, benefits were given to those who chose to come to the US through established channels, and further punishments tacked on to those here illegally, there would be even more incentive to leave, and come back legitimately.

Overall though, as far as I'm concerned, this is just another strike against Gingrich. It makes me like him even less. After his comments attacking capitalism, I wasn't seriously considering him as a candidate, but with this, he is sounding less like a conservative, and more like Bush 3. Romney is already too far left as it is, but given a choice between the 2 of them, Romney is sounding better and better.

I wonder, if people's attitudes were the same back at the end of WW2, as they are today, whether there would be anyone living, even today in either Nagasaki or Hiroshima. This constant fear-mongering to get out of Fukushima simply does not help. When it comes down to it, you could live right next door to the former nuclear plant, and would still be far more likely to die from a heart attack, old age, disease, or a car accident then you would be to die from radiation caused cancer.

I really don't understand this. Every single one of the candidates running for President are multi millionaires. From Romney and Gingrich, to Obama and Biden, none of them, not one of them is poor. And most of them never really had to struggle to achieve either.

You can try selling that crap somewhere else. TransCanada already acknowledges the pipeline will raise gas prices in much of the area covered by PADD II.

It really does amaze me how some people seem to have flunked economics. Go back and re-read the section on supply and demand please. Things will make more sense, and you won't feel the need to raise idiotic ideas, with no basis in reality. Seriously, increasing supply does not cause an increase in price.

I'm glad that she and her husband took the time they needed to decide that despite the desire to continue in public service the stress and the strain would have hinder her time to work on her recovery and would more than likely hinder it.

Honestly I wonder if she will ever fully recover from being shot in the head as she was. While I would have been happy to see her lose an election, to have anyone, but especially a outstanding lady such as Gabby Giffords, be forced to retire because of an attempted assassination is truly a tragedy, regardless of your political affiliation.
