When the school canteens are serving junk food rubbish? How do you reckon that one works, then?

Give them choices. Allow them to make those choices. If they choose to eat junk food, that their choice, if they choose not to, then thats their choice as well. This kind of crap really rubs me the wrong way.

Maybe forcing them to learn their times tables and basic grammar is also wrong? Schools do that, too.

Huge difference here. You can teach them how things work, and teach them what is and isn't healthy. This I have no problem with. Forcing them to use this, forcing them to do things, that I have a huge issue with. Nanny state food nazis. There is very little worse in my opinion.

The vast majority of progressives -- and I'm talking high 90 percent -- do not feel any "rage" whatsoever at Sarah Palin. Once again this is an obviously mentally unstable person projecting their own feelings onto others.

lol, just reading back over your posts would make any rational people question your comments. Looking over some of the posts other then yours, likewise belies your comment. The irrational hate expressed by these deranged loons, who constantly attack and belittle this woman, for no explainable or rational reason, says more then anything else precisely how successful she is.

Palin is worse than Bush. America is in big trouble if this bozo gets power.

Heh, a mentally incompetent idiot would make a better President then our current one. Palin, would be a huge step up. That said, I wouldn't vote for her either, unless she actually got the nomination.

Palin's a good fisher-woman. She gets the suckers to swallow her story hook, line and sinker.

She is an even better lightning rod. She gets all these loons to constantly strike at her. They almost frothing at the mouth in irrational rage at the success of a conservative woman. To a loon, theres nothing more evil and wrong then that.

Hows the goose stepping practice going? Ya damn food nazis.

Why is it that people seem to think they have the right to regulate what people can eat? Seriously? Why do they think they can regulate what people can wear, or think. This attitude is vile. If I want to eat healthy or unhealthy foods, its no one elses business. If parents want to feed their children unhealthy food, thats their business. Their kids will learn what is and isn't healthy in school. But forcing them to eat healthy because its 'better' for them is simply wrong. I mean hell, lets say eating Fish is 'better'. Lets ban that. Particularly in Japan! The Food Nazis here on the boards will love that, I mean as long as its Dems doing it, you'll go along right?

I'm a progressive and a veteran with a Vietnam service ribbon. I've never met another progressive who ridiculed my service.

Then you are lucky as hell. That was common about 30 years ago.

The idiot palin, who ignored all questions, deserves no answers as to why. People who defend her with "b-b-b-b-b-b-b-but arguments" cannot take out the woman's mental retardation as the main factor for their vote.

Huh, calling Palin an idiot again eh? And yet despite her supposed handicap, she is doing quite well for herself. I question the intelligence of libs who constantly attack and belittle a woman, not because of her mental stature, which despite the rants to the contrary, she obviously doesn't lack, but rather because of her beliefs. Because when you get down to it, thats the reason for all the attacks and the vitriol. The loons, on this board and elsewhere feel she has betrayed their expectations by being a successful conservative woman. To them, there is no greater crime.

Palin is not presidential material. But she may be crazy like a fox when it comes to money.

Now this I agree with completely.

Good on Germany. Before long, they might actually be able to put 'Deutschland uber alles' back into the anthem (if I've got that right) and be truly correct (while Japan simply forces people to sing and 'respect' the anthem).

Seriously? You think that groveling to the Russians, and throwing away energy independence is moving forward? That its going to put Germany first? I don't know what you're smokin smith, but I'd really like to try some of that fantasy drug. What YuriOtani and thequestion said was correct. This kneejerk reaction to nuclear power is idiotic.

Everything should move towards nuclear. Develop solar and wind sure, maybe throwing money at them will eventually make it cost effective. But coal, gas, and oil are not renewable, to say nothing of the pollution involved.

Israel is unlikely to move alone.

They did against Syria a few years ago. Guess everyone forgets that Syria was developing nuclear tech as well.

Is it possible that George W. Bush will make a comeback and run for the Republican nomination?

No, the 22nd amendment to the constitution creates a term limit for Presidents, meaning they can be elected to no more then 2 terms.

How could the Democrat-controlled Senate vote to extend the Bush-era Patriot Act?

Its passing because it makes sense.

Let the PATRIOT Act die. It's unconstitutional.

Proving you don't know what you're talking about. See, heres the thing about the Patriot act. All the stuff that people thought might have been unconstitutional, has already been taken out. The Patriot Act thats being renewed, is a much watered down version of the one that passed originally with bi-partisan support. And while people still use it to play politics, what this comes down to, is giving law enforcement the tools they need to effectively track and apprehend terrorists. And for me, I don't see this as a bad thing at all.

A 19 year old kid living with a 31 year old woman? Ok yeah, the guys scum for beating up the 5 year old, but whats up with the woman robbing the cradle? Guess I'm exposing my own prejudices here. If the genders were reversed, I'd still think it was weird, but not really wrong.

smithinjapan:"Whatever... after seeing the blind support he still has there he won't concede anything at all except for maybe scrapping one settlement plan for a year or so."

Lets consider. What have that Pals given up? As far as I can tell, nothing. They're still pushing to get East Jerusalem, all of the west Bank and they're still attacking Israel. What has Israel given up? Can you say Gaza? Israel has already given a sign of good faith, the Pals though can't be bothered. I see no reason why Israel should even consider negotiations until the Pals demonstrate an actual willingness to seek peace.

Well, now the Egypt military cracks down on anything that could destabilize its power, including teaching hate.

Not true actually. The Muslim Brotherhood is in the open now, and the Military is doing nothing. That is a huge change.

Remember, once Israel and Egypt made peace after the war, there hasn't been much issue between them. For 4 decades, it shows it can be done.

There are other factors you are not taking into account here. First, the government of Egypt wasn't in the business of teaching hate. In point of fact, they cracked down on that pretty harshly. The new government though, they seem to be allowing it. Contrast this with the Pals...

Do I think Egypt and Israel will go to war tomorrow? No, Egypt has too much to lose, and nothing to gain. This is not the case with the Pals who feel they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

The president's critics seem to think stealing land as Israel did is OK.

Heh, those in the Golan Heights seem to be glad that Israel stole their land. Particularly at the moment. Of course they've been living in a much freer society then their brothers on the other side of the border. At this point, I suspect a lot of Syrians wish Israel had kept more of their land, rather then just settling for the Golan Heights.

normally the international con approach is to sell off all public assets, make sure rich people have no new taxes while making sure all others do, reduce public spending which will be easy since there will be fewer assets that generated income, ring up massive debts in the process, then get kicked out of office.

This as opposed to the standard lib tactic of blaming all the problems on the rich, stoking the fires of envy and greed in the have nots, and taking from the rich to make them have-nots, while giving their money to the government...

you never see taxes to the rich increase to within only 100x that of the lowest employee (1970's it was 40x in USA so 100 to 200 times wouldn't be an unrealistic cut off), public institutions upheld so that people have hope, and open up the markets without subsidies?

Story is about Spain, but what the hell. Over half the people in the country don't pay taxes. That and the 'rich' pay nearly all of the taxes. So, who is really paying for the government? The evil rich. No doubt you're of the opinion that no one should make more then anyone else, and that anyone who does should simply turn over all that extra money to those who need it. (IE the government.)

Palestinians finally have to recognize Israel's right to exist and its security, like normal states treat each other.

Ah, so if you are willing to give me a lot of money and land, I'll finally have to recognize your right to exist as well? I can still kill you of course, but I recognize your right to exist...

Basically, a peace treaty. After war, warring parties usually compromise on lands and resolve issues, in return for a lasting peace - which is the ultimate goal in itself.

The naivete expressed here is staggering. A lasting peace? Do you really think, even for a moment, that there will be a lasting peace if Israel gives up all the land the Pals demand, and caves to every single demand they make? This kind of silliness really makes me wonder how some people can even manage to feed themselves.

Let me make this really simple. There can be no peace, as long as people on both sides teach their children to hate those on the other. The cause of the hate is not caused by Israel supposedly occupying their land. It is caused by those leaders who preach hatred. By the teachers who teach it in Hamas and Fatah schools, and from parents who as children were taught to hate Israel, and who pass that hate along to their own children.

I'd say with the exception of Harry S. Truman and possibly Gerald Ford, it's something every U.S. president for the past century and a half has lacked.

Shall we consider this? Bush trading on his name, worked as a front man for a sports organization, but before that, worked in the oil industry. Clinton worked as a lawyer in between stints as Governor. Just about every President has done something else, between their stints as an elected official. Some were government jobs, some worked in business. And very nearly every one of them, excepting perhaps Nixon and Bush 1, and of course Obama, had to consider and worry about payroll.

I would define Dwight Eisenhower as a moderate. Anyone endorsing most of Eisenhower's policies today would be branded as a socialist by right-wing loonies who, in their complete dishonesty and delusion, want to believe they are not on the fringe.

Wait, I thought he was one of the evvvilll republicans. Are you actually admitting that when I said the parties positions have shifted, I was correct?

Keep telling yourself that, but you won't get rational, intelligent people to believe it.

That depends on how you define rational and intelligent. For example, if you define it as people who think Moderates are actually right wing extremists, and who blindly follow their master Obama. IE Kool-aid drinkers. Then of course you are correct. No rational, intelligent people will believe it. If however you define the term to include people who are even moderately in touch with reality, with even the tiniest modicum of sense, then there isn't a single rational, intelligent person who won't. Obama has been a disaster for the country, only you kool-aid drinkers feel otherwise.

There needs to be compromise from both sides. Without compromise, both sides won't enjoy peace. Israel won't achieve the peace and stability it seeks; the Palestinians won't get their independent state. It'll be war in perpetuity. If they're satisfied with that, then they'd deserve to just live their lives as it is, with nothing solved.

Israels compromise is to give up a lot of land, and allow a potentially hostile country to be formed for a people who have been taught all their lives to hate Israel. What exactly are the Pals willing to give up? And why do they demand even more land than Israel is willing to give them?
