"...but denied being under the influence of alcohol during the news conference despite having had some drinks, saying he had taken too much cold medicine."

Its possible to drink alcohol, take cold medicine, and then have the medicine magnify the effect of the alcohol. However while it is possible, if he knew, or even suspected it might be a problem, then he had no business being there. And he certainly had no business drinking. How stupid can you get, becoming effectively drunk at a international conference like this. The man is an embarrassment. He should resign.

Japan's opposition to the ship's presence should come as no surprise when one considers the amount of collisions between military and commercial ships in the harbors around Japan.

Huge Metal ship, guarded by countless other smaller ships. You would have to ram it with a supertanker to do any kind of damage to it. And the tanker would be blown up long before it got close.

Moderator: What is the problem? She was still alive when the ambulance brought her to the hospital and she died sometime after arrival.

Should read, "where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival."

It's about time the USA decommissioned it's aging fleet of nuclear powered ships and designed more environmentally friendly powered carriers/ships using Green energy like bio-fuels, or a fuel that does not pose a danger to cities within it's proximity.

This has to be one of the dumbest, most idiotic posts I've ever read here on JT. No really. Nuclear power as the previous poster said, is both safe and green. Everything is self contained. Everything is monitored. Those so-called leaks in Japan were so tiny and insignificant that it didn't even need to be reported. Seriously, stupid idea.

If you think about it, the child is better off. What kind of life would it have had, with a mother like that?

This is quite simply, a despicable statement. Life, having a chance at life, is always better then death. Always! Who knows how things would have turned out. But a chance at life, is always better then being killed and abandoned as garbage.

Hard to believe or imagine a 10 year old girl killing herself. Can only ask why. Assuming this was suicide... why did she feel the need to do it. What was she so afraid of, or could she not face, that she would take this step?

I wonder if the republicans intend to fight the will of the people all the way through the first of Obama's terms? < :-)

Yes yes, I hear you loud and clear. Republicans aren't people their will doesn't count. Thats really what you're saying right?

Wait a sec... you were on here earlier today bragging about how only a tenth of the stimulus is going to be spent this year and how it's not a 'stimulus', but now suddenly it's the 'most massive spending ever undertaken'? well... aside from the Iraq war, which Sushi pointed out, and the MASSIVE amount of lies that bush needed to undertake it.

How much was spent on the Iraq war? Hmm about the same amount? Yeah, I remember Bush going to congress to ask for another 70 billion to fund the war. You guys remember that too? Oh wait, the spending bill this time around is 700 billion. Guess they added an extra zero. Iraq war 6 years 700 Billion = Pork Barrel Spending Bill 700 Billion. Yep, I think we can compare em.

Folks used to do it all the time without batting an eye until relatively recently and in some countries, they still do. Will you be imposing your cultural timeset morality on them too?

Folks used to commit murder all the time too. Still do in some parts of the world and justify it in the name of religion. Going by your logic, I guess thats ok too then right? I shouldn't push my cultural timeset morality on them right?

I call you puritanical for your indignant self-righteous tone and your argument which hinges more on emotion than logic

Of course there are emotions involved. This is an emotional topic. You'll note though, that despite the obvious emotion in my responses, I'm using logic throughout.

But it's not sick in the same sense of someone who lusts after a prepubescent youth which is far more abnormal as I mentioned before both psychologically and biologically.

It is sick, its just not sick in the sense you mean. I'll grant that someone who lusts after prepubescent children is far more danger to society. However individuals who prey upon young children and teens are likewise sick. And in that respect we are going to disagree. I find people who target young girls, even if physically they are sexually mature, to be deviants at best. You apparently want to excuse them and say, that while its not acceptable in todays society, at one time it was, so that makes it somehow alright. I'm afraid I just can't go along with that argument.

After wrecking the U.S. economy, it now seems the best the Republicans can do is - get this - BLOCK any serious attempts to address the massive problems they themselves caused.

Nope, Republicans made a serious attempt to address the problems. They offered a myriad of alternatives, ones that would have worked. Instead the Democrats chose to pass something that will hurt the economy rather then help it. Something that will end up costing jobs in the long term rather then creating them. Ah but as you say, at least they're protecting Pelosi's pet mouse!

I'll say it again, Dems had a chance to pass a real stimulus. They chose not to. Instead they chose to pass a pork filled spending bill that does very little to stimulate the economy, and more to pad the accounts of Dems favorite programs.

Now these backward people are denying that the mess we're in is their fault.

Zirc, from today onwards, Obama owns this recession. His stimulus, or should I say "porkulus" bill is going to have the effect of prolonging the recession. And with the additional costs coming next year, just as a recovery should be happening, well all I can say is, don't expect a recovery any time soon. Obama's own people admit it would be better to have done nothing then to pass this egg. The Obama depression starts today!

What a positively self-righteous unprovable statement. You got nothing to back that up but appearances.

Oh? Why not walk around the place you work, show your co-workers the story, and ask them what they think about a 27 year old man having sex with 14 year old girl. Find out how many of them men and women think its ok. Think that going after a girl you know to be underage is acceptable. Try that and tell me its the norm. Do I find a young pretty girl attractive? I'll grant the point. Of course, I do, I'm a normal guy. Heres the thing though. I also have an internal censor in me that the vast majority of men have. It looks at an available girl and says... too young. The reason young girls are so attractive, apart from the obvious, is that the younger they are, the easier they are. Thats part of the reason society has decided they need to be protected. Because for the most part, they fall for the easy lines. The older girls have heard them before. They know when they're being played and used. Or can be expected to know. But a young girl has a harder time dealing with that.

By trying to excuse those who don't have this censor, who don't use it, you are the one doing these girls a real disservice. Who are you really trying to help? What are you really trying to say? That its ok for a 27 year old man to hook up with a 14 year old girl? Is that what the point of your argument has been? Because if so, then I'll say it again, the one who is sick here, is you.

No, they've had no bid contracts going back a lot further then that. But then, Haliburton only had no-bid contracts in Iraq briefly. For the most part after that, they had to bid on them just like other companies did. However the other companies had to qualify. To demonstrate that they were capable of fulfilling the tasks needed. While I don't know of any current no-bid contracts they still hold, if they do its because they have no competitors in the field capable of meeting all the needs.

Haliburton is a unique company that employs a lot of people, with a wide range of skills. In addition they have a history of subcontracting other companies as needed. To put it another way, they're a damn good company that meets the needs of those who employ them. People who have maligned them, have done so more out of ignorance and hatred of Bush then for any real cause.

Oh, it occurred to me to give a bit better of an idea why no-bid contracts are awarded.

To put it simply, no bid contracts are almost always of short duration. They are used when something is needed to be done quickly, when there is only one company that can complete the contract immediately. What typically happens afterwards, is the standard bidding procedure, where all the companies in the field bid on the contract. Lowest bidder, best bid gets the contract. Then assuming they weren't the original holder of the no-bid contract, take over from the former contractor so that the service being provided is in no way interrupted.

The exact same thing happens frequently in businesses as well. A company needs something done immediately. The people running the company, reach out to someone they know in order to get it done. They go that way for a time, then planning ahead ask for bids from various contractors. My own company did this when we moved into a new facility a few years ago. A local cleaning company was hired sight unseen. 6 months later, after looking at a bunch of other cleaning companies, my company invited several cleaning companies to bid on the contract. The cleaning company we used then changed as the company we had been using, had a slightly higher bid. Thats not the only example I could cite either. As I said, it happens frequently. Just not very often in government.

I like the way you like to type while you're dreaming. Please come up with one reason why Obama would go for a single no-bid contract.

Hmm, maybe because they're standard operating practice in certain circumstances. Clinton gave no bid contracts, Bush did, and as I'm sure we'll see, Obama will as well.

They use to marry girls off at 14 in the past in just about every society on the planet and thought nothing unnatural about.

Lets consider this shall we? You'll note the term used to. What times do we live in? What society in age do we live in? In todays society is it ok to do something merely because at one time it was acceptable? The answer to that should be obvious to anyone. Trying to excuse behavior on the basis of the past is idiotic. In the past you could do kill someone for any reason, so long as you were of the right social class. Is that ok? In the past, in various place, you could carry a weapon, and have a gunfight. And no one would think twice. The only law was that of the strong. Still ok?

Society has changed, laws have changed. In todays society, a grown man deliberately going after a 14 year old girl is considered sick. People who somehow want to excuse the man are, forgive me for being blunt here, likewise sick. And if my saying it offends you, then you need to be offended. Calling me puritanical for simply expressing the view held by most of society is nonsense.

A pedophile is someone who is exclusively interested in prepubescents. That is the definition.

A pedophile is someone who targets children. In todays society, anyone under a certain age is considered a child. Thus anyone who targets them, is a pedophile. Simple logic, not hard to understand.

You're trying to change it so those who go after prepubescents and those who go after older children are different. I'm saying, that both under the law, and societies standards, there isn't. You seem to be trying to excuse those who go after these older children and teens, by suggesting that its "just" against the law. I can only assume by your stance, that you have no children of your own. If you did, if you were a parent I think you would feel very differently about the subject.

Your not naïve so please don’t treat others here as though we are. What are they going to be teaching classes in, carpentry, car mechanics or how to be a mercenary? What do you imagine “aviation support” might mean in this big bad dangerous world we live in? Advising on the length of airhostesses’ skirts, what pretty colours to paint the aircraft?

Heh, this is true. I suspect they will be teaching classes in everything from infiltration to laser targeting. As far as av support, I really don't know what this is going to entail, but I can imagine it being everything from close air support to simply hauling equipment and supplies wherever they need to go. It really depends on what they're needed for. These people are pretty much all former military who want to keep doing the missions, while actually getting paid for it.

And further to that, its only certain societies where some people are accepting this definition, and, it seems to me, not on its merits but because it is being crammed down their throats.

Ah, so its being crammed down the throat of society. I guess that makes it not valid right? Or just not accurate. Pushed onto society or no, if the society accepts the definition, and Japan obviously has, then thats just the way it goes, regardless of how it was in the past. It's todays definition that matters, not tomorrows, or yesterdays. By todays standards, by his actions, the man has earned the pedophile moniker.

You have no evidence he was targeting her for any specific reason whatsoever, except your imagination willfully going that direction.

How about his own statement? Guess that doesn't count though. Probably beat it out of him right?

Part of the problem is that even if you try to be like the Japanese, they will often tell you that you should act as a foreigner.

So funny, and yet so true. Has everyone else had that exact experience as well?

    They won't be forgotten. < :-)

They don't want to be forgotten. If they're forgotten, they don't get business. Don't get business, don't get money. Don't get money, can't feed your family. Pretty simple. By rebranding though, they obviously saw that the name Blackwater had acquired a pretty severe negative spin. And that doing business with Blackwater wasn't really politically correct. Thus rebranding, makes it easier to get business again.

Almost surprised Halliburton hasn't done this yet, with all the negativism toward them over the last 6 years.

You say the no-bid contract thing like its a talisman. Be prepared very soon for Obama to start awarding "no-bid" contracts of own.
