He decided that his life was over. He knew they'd find him guilty, and he'd have to serve out the remainder of his life behind bars. Obviously he couldn't take paying for his crimes, and took the cowards way out. Still, at least his cowardice saves the tax payers money. And finally provides a small measure of justice for his wife, whom he arranged to have murdered, so many years ago.

    TokyoVP,

Not going to happen. If it did, the global economy really would collapse. In fact there would be nothing left!

Consent... You do understand this concept right? Sex is what happens between two consenting adults. Rape is what happens when only 1 of the 2 consent. If a child is involved, then they cannot by definition consent. This is Rape!

I suspect its more likely, they held him for a few days, and let him go, considering that punishment enough for having sex with a 12 year old. Then he reoffends with a 14 year old, and they're like... Whoops. They never punish these rapists appropriately.

Sad as it is, its very true. You're better off dealing with the situation yourself, then involving the J-cops.

I agree, its still his responsibility. If she won't let go, you can't endanger her just because of her stupidity. And driving a truck, he can perfectly see what happens. It does sound like an accident, but hes lucky hes not being charged with more.

Ya know, I'm kind of wondering if the woman has a boyfriend. If the guy feels that the girl is interfering between them, wouldn't be the first time I've heard of something like that happening... Not that that is the case, just a thought. I'm sure the cops have already checked that out though.

Too bad he can't be tried as the adult he is. Or be punished with the noose as he so desperately deserves.

I'd be surprised to see them do more then a few months in jail. I mean, thats normally what happens with these crimes, sad as that is. That 18 year sentence a few days back was a pleasant anomaly, that we ought to see a lot more of.

I don't see a problem at all. First its only a very small segment of the population that would even consider downloading them, or would know how to do so, or know where to find them for download. Add in the extremely poor quality and the whole problem of people watching pirated versions seems silly. Now when you talk DVD quality rips, the same holds true. Most people don't know how to download them, how to play them once they have them. And its simply less trouble then its worth to just go out and buy a movie you enjoyed, then to download it onto your computer.

I just don't see it having a significant impact. Now people ripping DVDs, burning them, and selling them, that could greatly impact sales. Otherwise, its simply not economical to go after people for this issue.

No, this isn't capitalism. And there are people who are screaming socialism. What gets me, is all these people who love capitalism, until they do something stupid, then they're all, I hate capitalism. Save me with socialism from my stupidity.

Yes the laws need to be strengthened. But so do the punishments. The typical apology and slap on the wrist is simply unacceptable. Recently a guy got 8 years in jail for repeatedly molesting his 2 daughters, and beating his 2 sons. 8 Years. What a joke! 20 Years, that would have been a reasonable sentence. But 8? And the typical, apologize and pay a fine for molesting a woman...

What needs to be done, is actually requiring penalties. Real jail time for these types of crimes. Mandatory Minimum Sentences are a good way to go.

Markets are up, on very bad news. Another government bailout, this one costing trillions. Do people never learn. Wasn't the S&L failure and the Resolution Trust bailout enough of a lesson?!

He made an unfounded claim, you challenged it based on nothing, demanding statistics from him. If you have something concrete, then challenge him on that. Otherwise... Just state your opinion about this horrible crime, and move on. Right?

All I can say about it myself, is I'm glad these guys were arrested. I'm only sad that they won't be punished. They deserve 10 years in jail, they'll be lucky to get more then 30.

I think its the cowards way out. It means you are running from responsibility, not taking responsibility for it. If you do something shameful, you should live to apologize, to atone for your actions if that is possible. And if it isn't, you should live to do what you can.

Suicide is nothing more then the ultimate means of running away from your problems, and evading responsibility.

In theory, this would be a good idea. However, almost 74% of AIG's shares are owned by financial institutions and mutual funds. Many of their shares, in turn, are owned by pension plans. That's why the government decided it couldn't allow AIG to fail.

Thats not why AIG wasn't allowed to fail. AIG insures more banks worldwide then anyone else. It has more arms, then you can imagine, and shares of businesses all over the place. It has nothing to do with shares of stock. In fact, the value of that stock just dropped to nearly nothing. The US Government in saving AIG essentially forced it to issue it 80% of the company. Meaning the current stockholders had their stock diluted immensely.

    TonyUS,

You are being a bit hysterical in your reaction. Things are not nearly as bad as you're suggesting. And the US system works, still. The biggest problem was the subprime mortages, which no matter how you look at it, were a mistake. And giving them out to everyone...

    Farmboy,

I agree, that saving AIG was necessary. Its collapse, with the ties it has to banks worldwide, could have triggered a global recession. Ok, I don't see that necessarily happening, but its one of the possibilities, and stepping in to prevent its collapse was the best of a bunch of bad choices.

there is too much greed in the US market - which caused this.

Its not greed, but rather a lack of foresight. Many of us saw the housing downturn, and acted, shifting portfolios away from companies that had fueled the housing boom via their lending practices. I for one however didn't anticipate the ripple effect it would cause. I expected Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. I expected Bear Stearns. However the lack of movement by Lehman Bro's CEO, when he had many opportunities to save the company, that surprised me.

Again, more regulation is not the answer. The people who would be regulating the economy would be just as bad and probably worse then the people who created the mess we're in.

Posted in: What do you think of the recent financial upheavals in the U.S. that have seen Lehman Brothers file for bankruptcy, Bank of America buy Merrill Lynch, the collapse of Bear Stearns and the U.S. government take over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?

How many of us do any job out of choice? Most prostitution is far from this I think, especially where it is legal and regulated. But if you have some statistics to back up your claim, let us hear it.

You have statistics showing its not?
