While I agree that shoring up AIG is needed, its a very slippery slope the government is dealing with. This could very easily go the wrong way. And quick.

A lot of people seem to be misunderstanding both the problems as well as thinking the best solution to the crisis is government intervention. People think that more regulation is the solution. To put it simply, the managers and CEOs at these huge companies didn't see what was coming. At least not until it was too late to shift their positions. Do you really think some bureaucrat would be smarter, and more visionary then these people are? You really want to give a bunch of power to those kinds of people? I certainly don't.
China can't pull what its invested worldwide. When you say that, you make it obvious you don't understand what Global economy means. As well as showing you don't know where the Chinese and other countries are invested. Banks all over the world, including those in China, are looking to help shore up these firms, for the simple reason that if they collapse, the the entire world economy could very well slip into a depression. And if that happens... You think its bad now, you ain't seen nothin yet!

Like others, this crime could have been prevented with education, and a lot more of those "horrible" baby hatches that everyone hates. All I can say is, its tragic that one mother decided it would be better to kill her child, then to give it a chance at life.

This is just a joke. He's arrested, and so he's banned. God help him if he'd actually done something serious. What would they have done then? Killed him?

Not double jeopardy at all. Only if it was in the same jurisdiction, and the same charges would double jeopardy come into play. Its not, so its not. Simple as that.

Isn't beating a confession out of suspects the "norm" though? I would have thought they'd have already gotten that information. Maybe they're afraid to do it because these guys are military, and in for beating up someone else.

Umm, no theres no almost here. It definitely deserves capital punishment. And every news article should refer to him as the coward he is. Not because he failed to end his life, but because he would rather murder his family, then deal with his problems like a man. What a coward!

True, American Prisons are not nice. Besides, when you look at comparable crimes, say if a foreign girl had been killed by a Japanese guy, you'll see that this is much more severe a punishment then you'd have gotten in Japan.
Overall, I agree, the life without the possibility of parole would have been better, but this is a good and reasonable sentence.

I don't know about this. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I think Japan would ever try to retake them by force, but if you read that territory as belonging to Japan, and then assert that it has been illegally occupied by South Korea, then technically, Japan would merely be repelling invaders from their territory. As such, I don't see it as being against the Constitution. Don't think it would ever happen like I said, just not illegal.

Shame? For preferring to give the child a chance at life rather then just flushing them down the toilet? Myself I think this is a great thing. And like Rjd said, finally a step in the right direction.

Let me think, the ICC which is part of the most corrupt organization in the world being allowed to charge leaders with crimes... Hmm, well perhaps if everyone involved with it was first gotten rid of, the system completely overhauled to make it transparent, and actual laws were set in place to regulate what people can and cannot be charged with. Then, even still probably not. I don't think its possible to justify charging democratically elected leaders, who are held accountable by their own governments with crimes. Particularly not someone like Bush who has despite what the lunatics like to claim, committed no crimes.
All this talk about George Bush, and "illegal war" though is really just semantics. No war is really legal, not the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, nor the Chinese invasion of Tibet, but the Iraq war comes about as close as its possible to make it.

As you say, my mother was a working mother. Her working as she did was always a source of pride to my my brothers and my sister. It impressed me that she was able to balance both working and family together.
On the other hand, my sister-in-law is a stay at home mom. She and my brother decided this a long time ago. Now that her kids are getting older, she is looking to get back into the workforce. Taking classes just like they're talking about in order to have the education and skills needed for the job she wants. To me, both are impressive.

You have to understand, people here equate talking with people as torture. I know, I do empathize. Talking with some people for me is like torture. Still, its not like he was put on the rack, or given the thumbscrews. Now if he underwent what McCain did, and so many others, at the Hanoi Hilton, then, you guys might have room to make an argument.
But here is the fundamental problem. When does is murder, murder. At what age, do we have to accept responsibility for our own actions, even if we're influenced by poor role models? He chose to be there, and he chose to throw the grenade. Thats what it really comes down to here.
