Yeah, like others have said, this is either a tragic accident or a murder. The murder/suicide thing just doesn't hold up.

Speeding, then choosing to run for it. Hey, sorry the idiot died. But it was his choice to make, no one forced him to do it. No one made the choice for him. Regarding the police giving chase, and how he wouldn't have died if they hadn't... Sorry, thats just stupid. They needed to get him off the streets.

I like the man, but I think its important to remember, based on history, >that the Americans never leave. Not saying that's good or bad, I'm just >saying that's the way it is.

What history are you talking about? The Philippines maybe? Yeah the US is never going to leave there right. How about Panama. Not a chance that the US is ever going to return the Canal to Panama right. And of course you have the ongoing never ending Vietnam war to consider right...

Seriously though, that statement is so naive its hard to know where to begin. I don't think that anyone, apart from a few Neocon nuts want to keep the US in Iraq. We might maintain a small force there, to help out if needed, that might happen, but a large number of troops being based there permanently, simply isn't going to happen.

Yeah, agreed. JR really needs to beef up security on its trains, and at the very least require female staff to not work alone. That really is inexcusable on their part.

Molenir - "Just because pulling out would ultimately create thousands of >more terrorists"

Staying in there has already done that.

More then would result in a civil war, whose blame would ultimately laid, correctly at the feet of the US? I don't think so. Try selling something else.

SushiSake3 - The "Dreaded reality" that we're blocking out, what is that exactly? That pulling out now would cause Iraq to implode? That hundreds of thousands would die in the resulting bloodbath? Which reality are you talking about? It doesn't matter that we are finally making headway in Iraq, in helping stabilize the country. What's more important is for the US to get out, right?

I really wonder about people like you, who seem to wear a blindfold to hide from reality. Its got to fit your preconceived ideas, or its bad! Despite what you want, the world is grey. People support the war for a lot more reasons than you can conceive.

Why would people poison themselves with this you ask? Maybe because some people like the taste.

Obama committed to ending the war? Thats a joke right? What he's really in favor of, is running away, and letting Iraq implode. Yeah, lets end the war at any cost! We shouldn't worry about stabilizing the country. Just because pulling out would ultimately create thousands of more terrorists shouldn't stop us from running away right?

Why worry about the hundreds of thousands that would die in the resulting civil war that America is responsible for. No, we should worry about the 3k troops that have been killed in the years that the US has been in Iraq. And the 2k or more that could possibly be killed in the next few years as well.

Whats even more idiotic about this, is that the surge is working. Iraq is actually starting to stabilize, despite everything Iran and Syria have done to prevent it. With a stable Iraq, drawing down troop levels is very achievable. But ihttp://www.gravatar.com/f this loser gets elected, he'll of course take credit for everything. Well, that is unless he pulls all the troops out immediately. In which case he'll claim that the resulting disaster is all Bush's fault.

What it means, is with that population level, people are nuts for calling it endangered. Compare that to the previously mentioned Blue Whale, or even more so the Right whale which are legitimately threatened with only a few thousand animals currently.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not in favor of just outright lifting the ban on whaling, nor for indiscriminate slaughter. However neither am I in favor of listing animals on the endangered list when there are other species that really are in danger and which need a great deal more attention.

Let's also not forget that this is an endangered species.

Er, no it isn't. Thats what a lot of people fail to understand. Most whales are not endangered, particularly the smaller ones. There are species of whales that are endangered. The Blue whale is a good example, but the Fin is by no means threatened.

Thats why I don't mind whaling. From my perspective, as long as they're not actually endangering the species, then I see no difference between eating whales or cows.

And Farmboy, that list you shared is a very poor one. Not only are the most recent counts way off, but they're listing smaller whales as endangered, despite there being populations in excess of 50000. Some of the animals they list are definitely not endangered, while others that are, seem to be missing.

Thing is, look at the recent attacks in Akihabara. Still think guns are necessary to kill lots of people? I don't Guns may be easier, but other weapons are just as dangerous.

I personally like the supreme court decision. Its the right one. It didn't say people can own whatever guns they want. It didn't say governments couldn't regulate who could own guns, or require them to be registered. It just said the DC gun ban was extreme, and it was. It basically said that no one could have a gun. Not even in their own home, and if you did, you couldn't load it, and had to have a lock on the trigger.

What so many people always fail to understand, is that criminals can always get weapons. Laws only work for those who obey the law. In other words, these laws only serve to keep guns out of the hands of people who would use them to hunt, or for self defense. Criminals will get them anyway, and use them to hurt/kill regardless.

This issue, as well as the oil issue could easily sink Obama campaign for President.

Talk about a sick bastard. Kill your friends mom, and then still hang out with your friend, acting like nothings wrong. This guy deserves the noose, won't get it of course what with him being 18 and still a "minor". Probably be lucky to get 7 years for this monstrous behavior.

If I remember right, that act prevents or prevented trade from nations like Vietnam, Libya, Iran, North Korea, Cuba as well as others. Not many of those countries are still on there. Like Sarge said, I think its just Cuba and Iran on there now. Though there might be others. Couple of the African countries like Uganda might be effected as well, though I doubt it.

My own opinion of this is that its stupid. Why shouldn't the death penalty be an option for juries to impose? If the crime is heinous enough, then yes, the perp should be put to death, even if he is not guilty of actual murder. Saying that victims would be less likely to report abuse, or that childrens testimony is unreliable are just excuses for doing nothing.

And, apparently, in these types of cases the benefit of the doubt is >always with the U.S. military member (or American). Again, very sad and >quite disturbing to see in these cases doubts are always raised about the >Japanese female's side.

Actually, kinda goes the other way. Benefit of the doubt is always on the females side. Actually, male of female, the side of the Japanese person. Only way you could have missed this is if you've had your head in the ground for the past few months. Hell, at this point, if a serviceman spits on the ground these days, its national news. They crucified these guys publicly, then the prosecutors realized they didn't have a case. The marines though hold their guys to a little higher standard, and therein lies the difference.

Wait, you're alarmed by Pingas saying that a child can't provoke people into sexually abusing them? Why is that? What is it you're really saying? That you think its understandable and natural that pedophiles are going after young girls? If it is, then what I find much more alarming is your posts.

For gods sake, the girl was 11! Are you defending the guy who raped her, or the society that somehow things its understandable?

Boo hoo. A psychotic murderer was executed, only 3 years after he committed his murder. We didn't even have time to finish treating him for insanity yet. Seriously, who gives a damn. A monster is gone, society is now better off. The article, as well as the first post in response are just so idiotic I can hardly bear to reply. Regarding executing murderers as an Eye for an Eye.

It really does come down to what society deems is just. What the vast majority of society have decided, is that if you commit a murder, then you automatically remove yourself from society, and forfeit any right to continue living as well. I don't really see any need for debate about this.

In cases of insanity, perhaps there are mitigating circumstances, but when it comes right down to it, it doesn't change the facts. If you committed the crime, even if you weren't really aware of it, it doesn't excuse your crime, and you should have to pay for it. Admittedly much of this is my own personal view, as I see no reason to let people off simply because they claim to be mentally deficient. By my reasoning, anyone who murders another is mentally deficient.

Getting back to the article though. Having been convicted of the crime, and being sentenced to death. I think 3 years is a reasonable amount of time before sentence is carried out. It allows time for a few appeals in case of a faulty trial/lawyer etc. It allows a bit of time for the killers family to come to terms with what has been done and to say good bye. Often more then what the victims families had. Overall, I'd say its fair for everyone. Its certainly much better then the 8 to 20 years previously.

These are the kinds of crimes that are unforgivable in civilized society. Regardless of how you spin it, the girl is not to blame. As someone else said, she's 11, she can't seduce anyone. A man can take it that way, but he would be wrong, and be proving himself a pedophile.

I sincerely hope he gets a long sentence for committing this rape.
