Actually you are generally pretty safe alone there. They have a lot of traffic. Last time I was there, it seemed like there was always someone going by in one direction or another. Tourism is pretty much the tribes main source of income. Stuff like this really kills them. Not only in tourism revenue, but this is a really small tribe. Everyone knows everyone else. So finding out that one of them is a killer...

My reading of this, is this was some sick individual. I really don't think its a matter of traveling alone, but rather a matter of him finding a victim who happened to be alone at the moment, and taking advantage of it. Could have happened to anyone, this gal was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and trusted that the tribal guy, would be, like all the other tribal guys, friendly to the tourists. Unfortunately for her, he wasn't.

This man was very sick, mentally sick. A state that kills sick people is >sick.

Actually, thats something I've never understood. Why should it matter if the guy is nuts or not? If he does the crime, then crazy or not, he should pay for it. Its not about punishment, but rather about justice. Not only for the victims, but for those left behind, and society as well.

As you can probably tell, I'm strongly in favor of the death penalty. The minuscule possibility that someone may be wrongfully sentenced to death is heavily outweighed by the needs of Justice. And between killing a person by hanging, or killing a person by having them rot in a cell for 50 years, I prefer the rope. Its a lot cheaper, and provides better closure for the family and friends. And gives no chance that they'll ever get out and kill someone else.

Just so you know, the Havasupai Indian reservation is not how you normally think of the Grand Canyon. Its actually an offshoot of it, with several really pretty waterfalls and a small river that eventually drains into the Colorado. The initial hike is a series of torturous switchbacks, that last for about a mile. Followed by about a 9 mile hike to a tiny town/trading post. Once you get past the initial 1 mile climb down into the actual canyon, the trail in is mostly level with no real cliffs. While Mooney Falls is a bit of a climb, its probably the only real cliff in the area, though there are some fun places to climb.

Going by the guys name, he was probably a member of the local Supai Indian tribe. If you've ever been there, you see them working on the trail all the time. Having one offer to show you a waterfall not on the main path isn't that much of a stretch, particularly if you aren't familiar with the area. Regardless, is a really sad story. He deserves death, but at least he'll rot in Jail hopefully for the rest of his life.

Very fortunate she wasn't injured. And yeah, I think self defense classes would be a good thing too.

I think the only criteria should be the crime. Rapists and Killers should always have their names and faces published for everyone to know. Whether they're 10 or 100. People ought to be able to know who they're living next to.

Mind you six Japanese were also cought in the same breaking of the Japanese laws.

Yeah, but unless they were someone really big, they don't matter. I mean come on, foreigners arrested here. Who cares if a few Japanese got caught too.

Were any of the others arrested high profile people from high profile firms, or is it just the one foreigner?

Sure hope the prosecutor asks for a lot more than 17 years.

Yeah, its the mentality that its the womans fault that she was raped that bothers me the most about this.

I'm personally of the opinion that all cops and health care workers should have to undergo mandatory training on how to deal with rape victims. It should be standard training in order to become a cop or a caregiver. No more second rapes!

What was the cause of death? Bleeding from the mouth covered by a futon? That doesn't say anything.

My opinion is, that anime, manga etc should definitely be exempt. If sick bastards get off on this stuff, as long as no one is being hurt then who cares. On the other hand, pictures of real people being sexually abused, this should not be tolerated in the slightest.
