I could be mistaken but I think I saw this on the news yesterday. The boy was apparently on his skateboard when the accident happened. So they were saying they didn't know if the boy was in the driver's view or not so will be doing a thorough investigation.
Regardless, it's a tragic loss and a terrible ordeal for the family and the driver to go through.

Bad kids DO NOT always equal bad parents. Kids are kids. All is takes is one bad friend for a good kid to go off track. As Stephen and Jack said, parents shouldn't be responsible to pay for damages. Make the kids do community service or whatever and make them pay for it themselves.

There are too many bases in Okinawa so returning some would make sense. But moving too many personnel will mean a significant decrease in their local economy. I guess they will have to find other ways to make profit.

How about "smart"? Instead of it meaning intellectual, they use the word to say how someone (usually a woman) is slim.

I can see why Nagashima got the recognition and wonder why he's only receiving it now.
Matsui? Sure, he was a good player but does he deserve the HOF? I don't think so. Nomo was the first Japanese player to go Major and had a good career. Doesn't he deserve the recognition before Matsui?

@ cracaphat - one of my son's teacher said that it's not good to teach two languages from birth because it causes confusion. That kids need to master one language before picking up another. I was like, "What?!" Japanese seem to be comfortable in learning and only knowing their own language...

Agree FizzBit. It should be taught at the same time from birth.

Yes. If two people love each other, why not?
Even the dictionary has updated to include it. Merriam-Webster defines marriage as:
a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage
Inter-racial marriage was once condemned but is normal now. Hopefully same-sex marriage will be the same and people will leave them alone!

@ irishosaru - yes, they are US $.
I'm surprised that people still want to smoke even with outrageous prices! I'm an ex-smoker (stopped 9 years ago) and am glad I did. I guess price isn't a deterrence... Like Maria said, I think Bloomberg is trying to prevent people from picking up the bad habit. There's nothing wrong with that.
As for Japan, they need to ban smoking at all times in restaurants. That's a start.

When I started reading the article, I was thinking this guy is stupid for wanting to remain there. But as I kept reading and learning that he tried to go elsewhere, I can see why he chose to stay at home. I agree Okinawamike, how sad to be turned away by your own father. I wish Mr. Matsumura and his pets well!

So sad :( This story reminds me of the pregnant lady a couple of years ago who was turned away by a bunch of hospitals and ended up dying. Emergency patients should never be denied care. I mean, there should not only be ER doctors but there are inpatients - which means there are doctors in each ward. Why can't they provide care?
But this is Japan - where drunks call the ambulance when they had too much to drink and get taken to the ER. No ambulance cuz the drunks are using them as taxi and no beds at hospitals cuz drunks are using them. Being drunk is not an emergency! These fools who take up ambulances and hospital beds cuz of alcohol should be fined. I know this is a whole differenct issue but it might free up bed spaces!

As much of a pain it may be, I think the cityhall should require to bring their kids when registering/re-registering for child care allowance. Too many people abuse the system!

There should be adults walking with the kids. For example, the SAHM who aren't doing anything other than chatting with the other SAHM after their kids go to school should walk their kids to school. Or any volunteers would help too.
