ReaganLegend: I hate to break old news to you, but the armed forces have a well-known pernicious core of religious zealots who revel in persecuting "heretics".

Calling the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq "an act of war by his Christian Army" is quite a fair call.

But I think you do the US military a disservice by calling them "the bad guys", since they aren't all bad. Many of them were forced into service, and are not happy about murdering innocents.

If only Republicans had a shred of honor and integrity, perhaps they'd understand that they can't be Christians while espousing war.

Bush was quoted before the Olympics criticizing those who "tried to politicize the Olympics", and here he is (as everyone with a jot of sense expected) politicizing the Olympics.

And trying to religionize them, to boot.

I'd say "shame on you, Bush", but I hate chastising the ethically deaf.

Get your religion out of office, Shrubbie. Nobody needs your particular form of oppression.

There are some good suggestions here, but we need to be clear. There are TWO factors here, not one.

    1) Total weight

    2) Cabin space used

Both factors need to be considered with regard to obese people. The first factor should - to be perfectly fair - be applied to everyone.

Some average weight allowance should be determined, and those who fall below would get a discount.

A fat person who purchases two seats should also have more total weight allowance (== 2 x WA), which means they would automatically qualify for a discount unless they also packed too much luggage (a spare meal, for example).

USA!Patriot: no, you don't see that. Or, rather, you didn't see that while the comment was visible.

What you saw was me being unable to decide if you were serious or trolling. What your brain may have changed that into is something else, but the facts were quite clear.

A troll would post comments like yours that ignore valid points in order to incite a flamewar. The problem is, so do rabid rightwingers.

Darfur will not be dealt with until the Administration finds a natural resource they want to exploit. History tells us this is so.

A true patriot would not worship the man who is raping his own country just because that man is of the same political party.

A true US patriot would be one who understands the strengths of the Constitution and works to defend that. Anyone who supports Bush, by that definition, is NOT a US patriot. Bush would happily wipe his butt with the Constitution if he could figure out how to get it out of the case.

Japan is a protectorate of US because it is in the US' best interests to have it so. We aren't doing it to fight evil. To make that claim, when there is so much worse evil in the world that the US is terrified of touching, is the sign of a very blind man indeed. Patriots are not blind men, and you are not a Patriot.

USANutter: they are not. They are allegedly Socialist states, just like Russia was, but in reality they are just totalitarian states.

That you confuse Communism with Socialism is not surprising, given that you confuse crushing debt with growing economy.

I want to give you points for something, but you can't even spell US without screwing up the capitalization.

The US is protecting its own interests, we are not protecting anyone from "evil". That's not our job, or else we'd be in Darfur right now.

As an aside, anyone who has to put "Patriot" in their name is most likely not. You are a fine example.

People who worry about "communism" are lunatics. Since there is no such government in existence today (nor for the last few millenia), it's a non-issue.

It's far more relevant to worry about totalitarian powers that would invade Japan at the first chance (or, in the case of NK, try to destroy it).

The US forces act as a significant reminder that there will be consequences.

The other thing to consider is that Japan is officially not a free country. The terms of the surrender are the reason they do not keep a military force other than for domestic defense. This certainly has given them a leg up on spending money for other things.

Just think how powerful (and good) the US would be if BushCo hadn't blown several generations of national finances to line his own pockets.

VOR: you're a Libertarian now? I could swear I saw you claiming to be a Hillary supporter on another forum talking about how bad Obama was.

And a Ron Paul supporter on yet another forum saying how you supported Obama.

And... Well, it's like you are the most flexible of supporters, so long as you are never involved in honest criticism of McCain. Odd, that.

NB: It should read "presumed innocent until proven guilty".

The word "presumed" is extremely important there, and so many people mistakenly omit it.

Zybster, I live on planet Earth, in the 21st century. Maybe you could join us sometime?

Somehow managing to not commit rape and not commit armed robbery is hardly what any sane and rational person would call "ideal". It's what we call "duh, of course". Maybe your world is a lot more horrible. Do you happen to live in Bush's Iraq?

Anyway, if the military cannot police its members better, then they need to GTFO of Japan. There is no excuse for this level of crime.

ON BASE there is little to no crime. Why is it so hard for you to expect that OFF BASE the crime rate should not explode? (Again, if you live in Darfur then I understand why your views are so backwards.)

The military institution handles these crimes very badly, preventing any attempt at justice by yanking the criminals back home before actual law enforcement can deal with them.

This earns them a most well-deserved black eye.

I know they do it because they don't want to "lose face" by having soldiers convicted. They think that would be terribly embarrassing to the nation, tsk tsk. So they hustle them back home under the false pretense of administering military justice.

But in the real world (albeit not quite as "real" as the Dachau you must live in) this is viewed as running away from responsibility.

    NagoyaGaijin:

Being somewhat lower is not good enough. These are trained (allegedly) soldiers. They should have an extremely low rate of crime off-base. You should be able to count the percent on one hand, even if you have a couple fingers stuck up your butt.

What is the crime rate of foreigners here who are NOT soldiers? That should be a lot higher than what the soldiers get up to.

screw working habits, take damn work out of the equation!

You try that, Einstein. The only reason DST is used is because of businesses. Farmers don't need it. Just try to reset a cow's internal clock.

The level of arrogant ignorance in this forum is breathtaking. I suppose I should explain that, since you people are truly ignorant: despite the easy availability of information via Google or Wikipedia, you yahoos don't know jack about the purpose of DST, the reasons it was implemented, or the reasons it is a crock of gobsh1te; and thus armed with that impenetrable ignorance, you arrogantly assert that it is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It's unbelievable how you idiots manage to tie your velcro shoes in the morning.

DST has nothing to do with you enjoying daylight. It has everything to do with complicating interstate and international communications. It flat out does not work at all in some areas of the globe. And it has been shown to fail even at the purported attempt to regulate business hours.

But you idiots will keep on voting for it because they marketed it so well for you.

what's rocket surgery ? a cross between rocket science and brain surgery ? i think i found a candidate

He's staring at you from your mirror.

Methinks you are unfamiliar with Bushisms, and thus are a likely supporter of DST in all its glory. (BTW, might want to look up the word "sarcasm" as well.)

The original thought behind DST was that average people are morons and the only way to get them to implement adjusted working hours would be to pretend time itself had changed.

    They were right.

If anything, they were far too generous.

DST is not only a failure at curbing working habits, it adds many more hours of useless work, not to mention completely unnecessary confusion in the global environment.

If some of you DST supporters could de-rectify your heads for a moment, you might even realize that DST doesn't work in many areas of the globe. Literally does not work. Good luck with that.

Anyone who likes Daylight Saving Time is an idiot.

Those countries that use it need to get their butts kicked, continuously, until they stop.

If you want to get up earlier or later, hey, get up earlier or later. It's not rocket surgery, people.

    @USAkuma, et al, re: PEDOPHILES

There's a Western cultural issue that I'd like to point out to the English speaking folks here (and back in their respective home countries), who are probably unaware of their own history.

Pedophilia is the sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children. Ephebophilia is the sexual attraction to minors who are post-pubescent.

Culturally, the hyper-reactive disgust some feel for the latter group is historically recent. There are many people alive today who were born in a time when such a reaction did not even exist, let alone get used to ruin a person's entire life. Most of those people have adapted to this change in social conditioning, although they may not entirely agree with it.

For those who are angry at people like this teacher (is alleged to be), know that it is social-conditioning before you start throwing stones at them. You are free to think what you want, but try a little harder to justify your actions.

"Innocent until proved guilty" is a fundamental principle of law I believe

Nope. Never has been, hopefully never will be.

The American legal system is required to presume innocence until guilt is proven. There is a world of difference there.

As a result, if the prosecutors fail to prove guilt, they do not declare the suspect innocent, but rather "not guilty". That distinction is a bit more subtle.

I saw some excellent comments already. I would just like to add one thing:

IF any names are released, it should not be done before they are tried and found guilty.

Perhaps that is my cultural bias showing. I come from the land of "presumed innocent until proven guilty". Although, honestly, my country has been pretty bad about adhering to that ideal.
