Asking for clarification isn't 'calling the author to task'.

It often is interpreted that way, although I admit you probably have a softer touch than I do. Gotta leave the sponge at home next time.

Even so, plenty of male researchers don't take kindly to answering questions from female translators…

The US press is vastly republican and almost solidly conservative

True for the ownership but not for the reporting staff.

I felt it here in Sapporo, too. Pretty strong.

a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8

No such thing as a "preliminary magnitude," and "broke out" is most certainly not the proper collocation. At least they got magnitude and intensity right.

    USA

    Today was the most centrist

Sail, my point is that USA Today is a cartoon version of a newspaper, with very short stories and lots of color (for the educationally challenged). I wasn't saying it's not centrist. It's written for a much younger reading level than the Times and…

Note also that the NY Times didn't make a fuss of it. It's McCain who made it public. He's obviously looking to get mileage out of this in the red states, which tend to be less educationally accomplished and read great newpapers like USA Today.

    I'm with Cleo.

Of course, grandfathering-in carriers under the old rules would result in different rules for different employees, so that would be sticky.
