Who's going to trust domestic pronouncements of safety?
Even if Japan is safe, the authorities providing information committed the "3D's" of dithering, dissembling and disinforming. The TEPCO chickens are coming home to roost, and people overseas are worried they'll have an extra drumstick.

They are problems of liberal democracies. The tendency is to increase services without increasing revenue. The old bread and circuses problem.

I would rather force people to have access to contraception than be forced to support unwanted children. No-one is forcing any behavior on religious people or defiling anything sacred. If you don't want to use contraception, you don't have to.

How much does it cost to ride the commuter train to the last station and take a walk in an unfamiliar neighborhood? I agree with Cleo. The limitation is force of habit, not money and certainly not time.

@sailwind
Sailwind, which will end up with more government intrusiveness: even more illegitimate kids on the welfare/medicare teat, or including contraception in healthcare? I agree that government intrusion is a legitimate concern, but framing it as intrusion on the input end ignores the intrusion down the road on the ouput end, if you follow me.

Spoken like a true car driver. This has been proven to be untrue. In addition, you're not allowed to cycle on the sidewalk.
Pedestrians want cyclists on the street; drivers want them on the sidewalk. How 'bout y'all figure it out and provide the appropriate infrastructure. Until then, I will blame stopped cars for making the roads dangerous. For the record, I think think cyclists who ride against traffic should be heavily fined. Ditto for taxis that make sudden stops and u-turns. Same for cars stopped on trunk roads.

It's cheaper to pay for contraception than to pay medical bills and eventually prison for unwanted children. It's the lesser of two nanny state evils.

Crack down on illegal parking and the cyclists will be happy to stay on the road. But that will never happen.

They might not have been there, but it doesn't mean their family didn't own land before the base was built. If you moved there after the base was built, you have no right to complain about the neighborhood. If you live on ancestral land that has been despoiled by the presence of the base, then you have a more legitimate grievance.
