    @movieguy

After 15 years of an 800,000 Yen limit on the MC and a 1,000,000 Yen limit on the Visa Gold they suddenly told me that actually the limit was 800,000 Yen combined. It took them 15 years to realized that??? So now I'm over my 800,000 Yen limit by 35,000 Yen.

I upvoted you for this information, but really...can we file this under "F" for "first-world problems"? ;)

It seems you have a fanciful understanding of legal jurisdiction. Look at Olympus. The company is headquartered in Tokyo, but the FBI is investigating Olympus for fraud.

Thank you Nessie. I'll make sure to buy half-a-dozen to my husband. I'm not much of a beer drinker. Too used to the wine I guess.

Sure. Beer Advocate was not impressed, but I like it.

They also don't like Yebisu Cremy Top, which I think is Japan's best porter, so what do they know!

I'm more of a wine drinker too, and for red I recommend the Costco Baron de Lay 2004 Rioja. The best wine I ever had for 1100 yen, and better than wines twice the price. The Costco price is absurdly low -- less than half the price of online retailers.

I wonder what sort of families those five punks come from. Why are they even out and about at 5 a.m.?

The dark choco Kit Kats were great.

The problem with beer is that I no longer trust the seasonal versions. Seasonal beers are just the same beer in a different can. The exception is Yebisu Kohaku, a wonderful amber ale in a red can. For once, it's not just the can that's different. Highly recommended.

My parents who come to Japan a couple times a year are different. My father’s a bargain hunter. I do my shopping at Belc. He goes to Costco. God forbid I should spend 3,000 yen on fruit and vegetables after he’s stuffed the freezer with bags of cheap frozen stuff for a fraction of the price

What a wonderfult, colorful. wrongheaded example.

Costco sells romaine lettuce, which is superior to the Japanese iceberg and sunny lettuce. They also carry superb bell peppers for one-third what you would pay in a supermarket for the inferior Japanese product. Zuccini, button mushrooms, raspberries, blueberries, string beans -- all excellent, all cheap, all fresh and not frozen.

There's probably not a whole lot the Chinese government can do in terms of stopping individual boat owners from crossing certain lines. At best they could just make it clear they won't do much to help them

    Check out this photo

    http://photoblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/17/8853222-south-korean-coastguard-clashes-with-armada-of-chinese-fishing-boats

When you have illegal boats rounded up by the dozens, you can't dismiss it as some rogue individual. Notice that all the boats look similar. I wonder if it's a single owner.

It should be very easy to put the screws to the boat owners, if the will is there, given China's cavilier attitude to law. China grants licenses, I assume. All they have to do it require a large deposit that's forfeited if the boat is caught with it's hand in the cookie jar.

About the heroic liberation of this downtrodden Himalayan region of China from the inveterate capitalist-roader, Tenzin Gyatso (a.k.a., the Dalai Lama)?

all these people expecting japan to make an official apology against their war crimes... let me ask, how many of you are americans? show me a handful of decent american war films where american soldiers ARENT portrayed as the divinely-sanctioned saviours of the universe and then maybe i will take you seriously.

Platoon, Thin Red Line, Born on the 4th of July, Apocalypse Now, Casualties of War, Catch 22, Dr. Strangelove, Fail Safe, Heaven and Earth, MASH...

I don't know if they still do it but HIS had a policy of charging foreigners more money for airline tickets than Japanese

The MInistry of Tourism read them the riot act, becuase it was ILLEGAL. HIS = ILLEGAL.

It's all about the crust. Should be crisp on the bottom, but still chewy. Not too thin; not too thick. In Sapporo, Bison and Nano Mano are only places that do really good pies, although both places could go slightly thicker in the crust.

Vigilantism, ie; taking the law into your own hands without authority or jursdiction, is illegal in all 50 states of the United States. That is exactly what Watson and SSCI are doing.

Ossan, you're really got to the crux of things with this. It's hard to find a court in any of the 50 United States that looks favorably upon vigilantiism. I will bet a whale steak to anyone's tofuburger that Sea Shepherd will lose. And I write this as someone who thinks Japan should not be whaling -- but that Japan is in the right with respect to its case against the eco-terrorists.
