yet all of these countries - Tunisia, Morocco, Yemen, and now Egypt and Lybia are being rewarded with less democracy and fewer freedoms

The new government hasn't even taken power, so it's premature to compare next year's democracy to last year's.

Sex selection combined with China’s population control rules has led to a gender imbalance in the country, with 118.1 boys currently born for every 100 girls against a natural ratio of 105 boys for every 100 girls, according to U.N. figures

As if that's the only reaons?

While not my favourite, I had to vote the Beatles. I think they were, especially at the beginning, far too campy

    Not like Queen, eh?

One million civilian dead in Iraq

Unless you're using crackpot estimates, the figure is in the several hundreds of thousands, which is horrible enough.

"Amnesty International recognizes the value of raising awareness about cervical and breast cancer in Africa, the stated aim of the visit

That's the stated aim, but we all know the truth: He's going there to waterboard cancer victims. Oh noes!

I'd be more sympathetic to Amnesty International with the bloated rhetoric and subtle insinuations.

Definitely not. The radiation in Tsuchiura and immediate surroundings is really very low despite the fallout. He might have fallen on an extreme hotspot and died from radiation before the accident might have finished him - but that's ruled out by Occam's razor. Furthermore, Japanese doctors should be capable of diagnosing physical trauma.

Who said anything about radiation? I was referring to the weather in Ibaraki. If you're hit in this season and you survice but can't move, you have a very good chance of dying by exposure (to the elements, i.e., the cold).

    @willi / jackinoff (uh oh!)

It is not about him pontificating in his fabled speeches. It is about him putting diplomatic and financial pressure on Mubarak to step down and open the door to the islamists.

So you think Mubarak was salvagable and the US should have expended political capital trying to salvage him? Go freedom!

Now, he is putting pressure on the military to give up all of their influence and this will very possibly open the doors to the Muslim Brotherhood getting into power.

You don't think that's inevitable? And would you prefer a military government?

BTW, since when did the Muslim Brotherhood become a 'moderate group'.

I never called them that, so I'd have to say: durned if I know.

    @ Mr. Jackinoff

They are a huge block and Obama really has been ignoring the potential for true disaster in the region.

What would you have him do? If he comes out against the Islamists, it only strengthens them.

    Greatest rock band to date

Well then Queen's out, considering what happened to poor Freddie.

The drinking age should be raised to 65, and it should be made a maximum.

He said he had been ousted because he had voiced concerns over high-priced acquisition deals in recent years and alleged serious flaws in corporate governance.

Wonder if he has ammo for a libel suit.

Getting BETTER than a Grisham book!

The Olympus Proxy, now in hardcover. Profits to go to charity, minus a modest 35% commission to an anonymous account in the Caymans.

The Koran, much like the Bible, is full of internal inconsitancies and, in practice, open interpretation and cherry-picking. And many of the more unplesant practices often assosciated with Islamic law often turn out to be tribal practices that have no basis in the Koran.

    Like spousal abuse?

Ibaraki in November? Could well have died of exposure.

The movie is good, with great interviews with Erik Idle, Eric Clapton, etc. It tends to gloss over his dark side, though. It's a Scorsese biopic, but I guess it's not easy to do warts-and-all given all the post-post-ex-retro-Beatlemania.

What I find disheartening is that some of these women seem to be serial filers of harrassment suits and thus less credible but that the weight of evidence shows that Cain has harrassed women, seen them paid off and lied about it. No heroes here.
