    @sailwind

This whole thing would have been a big nothing if he had just responded "No I have not but there was an allegation of it on my part during my time as head of the NRA back in 1997 that was resolved years ago."

Are you suggesting the media was out of line for wanting to know how it was "resolved" (with payoffs) years ago? Or should they just take Cain's word for it?

In the Anglophone world the rise of cable caused network TV to up its game. This never seemed to have happened in Japan.

And when people tried to complain, Ishihara just told them to "shut up" (黙れ)

Must be from his new book: The Japan That Can Say "Shut Up."

PS to Sailwind - I see now that the quotes were from Taka. They were not posted as you quoting him, so it looked like you were saying them. I want to acknowledge this here out of respect to you, while adding that you can see how it looks like you were making those statements.

I mean really a compliant filed against a boss by a female in a corporate office that was duly handled by their procedures and their HR department 12 years ago is the best our main stream media can do to bring down a politician or public figure they don't like?

There are three women involved. Two of whom were paid off. Certainly smoke, if not fire (yet).

Now our main stream media has sunk to the level of tabloids in publishing stories with anonymous sources that has even puts rags like the National Enquirer to shame.

Do you think the AP is making it up?

Did they attack the woman when John Edwards had his scandal? NO. You are making stuff up. Did the media attack the woman when Gary Hart had his scandal? NO.

Why would they attack the women? They were not working for the politicians at the time of the affairs. Sex is not automatically harrassment.

Your comparison is a non sequitur, Sailwind.

Just today I was standing outside waiting for the morning train (in just jeans and a short sleeve polo shirt). All around me were Japanese ladies with full length jackets and scarves (some with gloves too). And they look at me like I am mad.

BTW, just because Clinton lied under oath about sex. I don't think that makes him dishonest about everything else. Did you?

Clinton also suborned perjury, and he concealed evidence. These are pretty serious wrongdoings.

There is no evidence so far that Cain has done either.

The guy came out with 2 completely different answers. Had he and his team been behind this leak, there would have only been 1.

    A good point, Sushi.

Good stuff from you, too, Sailwind.

The issue seems marginal enough that it won't really change my opinion of Cain either way, not that it was particularly high to begin with. It's a he said/ she said situation, and unfortunately false charges of harrassment are common enough that I would give the benefit of the doubt to Cain unless there were more concrete details against him. His tax policy seems whacky, he does not seem to have a grasp of international affairs, and he has made bigoted comments, so all he really has going for him in my opinion is his affability and straightforward-seeming demeanor.

But his intellect, verbal dexterity and competence appears to be too threatening for mainstream conservatives to cope with.

I saw him asked how he would deal with the nuclear Iran situation. His solution was to "reduce energy dependence", which is an utter cop-out.

The only real surprise here, is that it took this long for a story like this to break.

It's not impossible the Cain camp leaked it themselves while Cain is on an upswing in order to dimish its impact later. (Of course, this has no bearing on whether the allegations of harrassment have any foundation. The fact of a payoff is enough to want to get this out of the way..)

It is absurd to expect that law, or the new ordinances that have just gone into effect, will eradicate the yakuza. While I don’t have the actual figures, I am certain the organized crime sections in the police have increased their manpower. I would say the maintaining of such numbers are the police’s subtle way of indicating they still want the boryokudan to stick around.

    Huh?
