I realize this. But in this case, the reporter should write that they were prounced dead. The way its written, it sounds as if the reporter knew they were alive and knew that death occurred later. If we don't know that, then we should write that they were pronounced dead. That's not what the reporter wrote. The reporter is writing as if he or she has some sixth sense that knows for a fact when death occurs.

Would we stop with these absurdities? They were PRONOUNCED DEAD a short time later. It is implausible that they were under snow for two hours, were found with no pulse and then LATER died.

This is a problem, NetNinja. Also when they tell the specials only to my GF. I ask them to repeat them to me and they get flustered. It's a lose-lose situation, since you only end up looking bad for calling them on it. I've privately spoken to the manager after the meal on more than one occasion. Only at fancy places, though, because when I'm paying 20,000 yen for dinner, I expect 20,000-yen service. It's particularly galling to be the one paying for the whole meal, and end up the one who gets stiffed on service.
The other complaint is when the waitress brings the dishes and asks who ordered what. At a table for two, I don't think it's too much to expect to remember who ordered the zaru soba and who ordered the kitsune soba. It ain't rocket science.
Compare this to a high-end sushi place I went to recently. The sushi chef noticed within 15 min that I was a lefty, and he but the sushi down the opposite way to accomodate me, so it was easy to pick up. I never said a thing. He never said a thing. That's good service.
Overall, the service is polite and reasonably attentive, but only marginally competent.

What, they banned it outdoors before they banned it in restaurants? That sounds backwards.

This will effectively be a regressive tax. Some increase is necessary, but there are already hidden structural taxes, which are the cost of living or doing business in Japan, such as inefficient distribution and lifetime employment of unproductive deadwood.
Other steps that need to be taken:
raise the retirement age
lower pension payments
increase health insurance deductibles
increase health insurance costs of free-riding elderly
