this blood-group-personality thing is a load of hogwash. According to all the books, Mr cleo and I are the worse possible combination in terms of both blood group and zodiac sign

I agree, but your evidence is anecdotal. You could be the happy exception that proves the rule.

Sounds like the Japanese have taken a page from the playbook of the Chinese fishermen who invade Korean and Japanese waters and fight off the respective coast guards with poles.

Yeah, those Chinese fisherman should stop harassing the Japanese and Korean coast guards. That was sarcasm.

You could claim that the US has stricter punishment for crimes compared to other countries but how is this a human rights violation? A harsh prison sentence meted out following due process is a violation of the criminals' human rights? I don't think so.

The argument is that the sentences for nonviolent crimes are laughably severe and disproportionately imposed on racial minorities. It may not be a clear-cut human rights violationk but it borders on it, and it's reckless social policy in any case.

Incidentally, I appreciate the chance to disagree with someone whose posts I appreciate and opinions I respect.

Bad:

I enter the carriage and find it's women only. I move to the next car. As I get ready to sit down, I see it's oldster-pregger priority seating. I move again. I notice I'm now in the no-cellphone zone.

Fair enough on the olderster/preggers, but for cellphone no-fly zones and women-only cars, enough coddling already.

Same with cheese: the Yen gets stronger, yet imported cheese gets more expensive. We hardly buy it any more.

I load up a huge cardboard box when I'm overseas. Usually 30,000-40,000 yen worth in a box half the size of a large suitcase. Customs is curious but gives me no grief. Sometimes it gets openeted by the airline safety people for its resemblance to semtex.

Last time I did this in Ireland, the cashier winked and said "Got mice, do ya?"

Vegetables & 'real' cheese are very expensive. On that point, has anyone seen swede (rutabaga) or parsnips in Japan?

Funny you should mention it. I was at an eccentric Japanese restaurant last night and the cook served what he called "Amerikan boufu", which turned out to be parsnip. They grow them in Eniwa and Niseko, Hokkaido.
