Nessie, couldn't he have left the US on his US passport and then reached into his other pocket when entering Japan? I have heard from one multiple passport holder that she swaps on the plane.

It would depend on what countries issues the passports, I think.

About which passport he was traveling on, I imagine it was the US one, since the US requires US citizens to enter and leave on their US passport, and Japan would be suspicious of a Japanese passport with no departure stamp.
