I kind of surprised at the popularity of Star Trek in 2009. Forty years after it flopped on network TV, it has become the Paramount franchise that refuses to die, even after half the cast and its creator have gone out into the universe. The question is, what will they call the sequel? Star Trek--The Sequel?

Norpin clearly is a Trekker (Trekkie is considered too cute), as it is clearly stated by the Procounsel Claudius in the episode "Bread and Circuses": "But on the other hand, why even bother to send your men down? From what I understand, your vessel could lay waste to the entire surface of the world. Oh, but there's that Prime Directive in the way again. Can't interfere."

Fujikawa laughed bashfully, “I think I’m about to get a nosebleed.”

You get nosebleeds from too much attention?

Hatoyama makes Aso look good by comparison. Aso at least can speak to foreign dignitaries in English and pretend to be civil. It's all puppet theater anyway. The one actually pulling the strings will be Ozawa.

Everybody knows that Bill Shatner is Canadian. The article is about the character of Captain James T. Kirk, who is as American as Rigelian apple pie. By the way, Jimmy "Scotty" Doohan, God rest his soul, was also Canadian. The 23rd century will be run by Canucks it seems.

Yeah, Kirk is out to make the galaxy safe for free "Enterprise" so that it can expands the "Federation"'s economic interests. Though supposedly an exploration vessel, the ship is armed to the hilt with enough firepower to level a planet, so like Teddy Roosevelt, Kirk speaks softly but carries a big stick. Like Bush, he is ready to fire all phaser banks at a moment's notice, and is frequently at odds with Spock (the more rational Colin Powell?), who often criticizes the "low regard Earth men have for life."

Captain James T Kirk, on a distant planet that somehow developed into a twisted parallel America, rises to recite the preamble of the U.S. Constitution in a way that only William Shatner could.

Yup, the infamous "Omega Glory" episode, with the Yangs (Yankees) and Coms (Chinese Communists). The episode showed once again that Federation Starship Captains are trained in the martial arts--maybe a parallel to today's Vladimir Putin. Starship captains always have to be ready to kick alien butt at a moment's notice.

Unique clothing. Uniqlo. Ironic, isn't it? Everyone has them.

"The Bambies". Cute name for an all-male band, though Ed Sullivan might have snorted a laugh introducing them. "And tonight we have a really great shoe..."

I actually think Samurai Japan concept was a clever idea. It rallied the team behind an unifying ideal (of course it is an idealistic romantic myth), but myths and symbols have power. Remember the movie "The Natural" with Robert Redford his "Wonder Boy" bat? When one of Roy Hobbes' home run flies is hit by a thunderbolt, the team adopts the thunderbolt symbol on their uniforms, and they start winning. OK, maybe it's just a fantasy story. But dreams have a way of inspiring people. I'm not saying they won BECAUSE they were "Samurai Japan" -- but there is no denying there is a psychological factor in victory, and the coach milked it for all its worth.

Paul Waley writes in his preface to “Tokyo: A Cultural and Literary History,” the metropolis “allows you strange freedoms. And the most fundamental of these is perhaps the freedom to read what you will into or onto the city.”

Judging by the number of comments, I'd say few of us exercise that strange freedom. But of course Tokyo is one of the few cities on earth that is open to interpretation. (sarcasm intended)

It does look like some kind of classical Chinese landscape painting. Very Asian. Good job, Mr. MacDonald. I'm lovin' it!

Half of the Korean team turned their backs on the winners??? Wow, talk about nationalism taken to the extreme. It's just a game, for crying out loud, and this was a tournament that went mostly unnoticed outside of Japan.

Yes, it's time for the Japanese public to eat those Freddy Mercury champon noodles again. Because "We are the champons, my friend. And we'll keep on fighting to the end...We are the champons...of the world..."

Yeah, you can thank Mel Brooks for "Anne Droid" (Space Balls, the movie). Terrible film with great one-liners. "I'm a Mawg, half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend."
