Imagine if it had been found thousands of years from now by some archaeologists looking back on the ancient culture of 21st century Japan. They would have assigned as the statue of the Lawgiver of Life, the Colonel of Sanders, a figure revered throughout the nation, and none of these statues would be ever be found in the former continental United States of America.

Ultraman the TV program from the 1960s was extremely violent for a kid's show. The poor monsters get pounded and smacked and are sometimes sliced up into pieces by Ultraman. In some episodes the monsters are crying. Seeing this as a kid, you can't help feeling "kawaisou" for the offed monsters but this was perhaps the intention of the producers. Why has the show been popular for so many years? Because Ultraman kicks butt and gets away with it, unlike some politicians in Japan.

Is that an oyaji joke? "Kabukistar"? The original Andrew Lloyd Webber musical (and the movie) had some terrific songs: this one was a show-stopper:

It's not so much what he said but the way he said that resounded with Congress. I hate it say it, but he came off like a rock star still on his honeymoon. But it was the tone that needed to be set. After the somber Inauguration speech, this one showed Barack Obama in his vintage stump-speech form. My favorite line: "Nobody messes with Joe."

Cool. Looks like the Alien. But it's true, the dinosaurs were on this planet a lot longer than homo sapiens will ever be, because in 10 million years (which is a sliver of time in the Age of the Dinosaurs) we will be evolved into the Borg or something. All of human history is just a flash in the great scheme of nature.

"Departures" is a good translation for the original title. "The People who Send the Dead Off" somehow wouldn't have worked in the international market.

I just read that Japan's "Departures" just won for best foreign film. With the lovely Ryoko Hirosue. It means box office gold for that film now.

It takes a big man to admit he made a mistake. Obama said flat out, "I think I screwed up." At least he was honest. He didn't want to send a message to the American people that there are two sets of standards, one for the rich and powerful and one for everyone else. Good help is hard to find these days.
