I liked what McCain had to say. He spoke from the heart without any cynicism and you cannot challenge the bit about outgrowing his initial arrogance to serve a greater cause than yourself. Obama's speech was great, too. Neither candidate can afford to give a bad speech at this point. And neither has. It has all been calculated for effect. It's going to be neck and neck right down to the finish line, as it was when the George Bush barely passed by Al Gore so many years ago...

Because history has shown over and over again than negative campaigning works. Karl Rove is the master. You go on the offensive and raise as much doubt as the other person as possible. Come on. What kind of question is this? What U.S. presidential campaign in history hasn't generated a lot of vitriolic comments from both sides? Did you expect a tea party?

I wonder how effective this device is. You first have to know where the kanji combination starts and ends. That in itself requires a high level of knowledge. Also, I doubt that it would cover the problem of names, which have endless variations in readings. But it could be a handy tool. I also like Halpern's Kanji Learner's Dictionary, but I find that the Internet is probably the most effective tool out there for reading text data.

Aso would be to Japan what George W. Bush was to America. Before 9/11, that is. Yuriko Koike definitely has more brains, but it aint gonna happen. Now, if only the American TV anchors will be able to pronounce the name correctly without getting phone calls from concerned parents.

I must admit I fell for the marketing, and I have my regrets. My old keitai was much easier to use, faster, lighter--and worst of all--there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Now I have all these functions I don't need and a monthly payment plan for the next 2 years.

Great achievement yes, but doesn't the comment "I was so calm that I think I could have seen each face in this venue" come across as a bit too cocky? I don't know, maybe something got lost in the translation.

Well, not much has changed, has it? That bit about "Tone" meaning "River" and "Noto" meaning "Peninsula" is interesting. So Tonegawa means "River River" and "Noto Hantou" means "Peninsula Peninsula"! Kind of redundant and saying the same things over and over again.

What's amazing about this photo is that they are alone in Tokyo doing this. Normally you'd have all of those wooden benches filled up to the max. I guess they picked their spot and planned it long ago to avoid the crowds. Smart couple.
