I'm surprised that so many people here voted for Obama. I mean, expats tend to be more liberal, but wow, he's leading by half. Obama's problem is the same as McCain's: his age. Only he's too young. But wait till the September surprise is pulled out of the bag by the McCain camp--everyone knows the media has a tendency to turn on their own creations. The liberal press made Obama, they can just as easily break him.

This photo is like one of those infinity mirrors--you know, you get in between 2 mirrors and automatically you're Bruce Lee in "Enter the Dragon." Only in this case, it's more like "Enter the Dragon Ladies."

Tokyo is a pretty good deal for the majority of expats, I'd say. You can actually save money if cut down on the alcohol. Cheap public transportation, cheap and good quality food, relatively cheap housing if you don't mind sleeping in a box, and best of all, relatively cheap broadband access. The only thing that sucks is that you have to pay 10 dollars to buy a peach.

Well, Obama going for the JFK moment in Berlin is political showmanship at its most obvious, but you've got to hand it to him: he knows how to give a damn good speech, flimsly on content though it may be. The point is well taken that he is not even the official Democratic nominee yet. He's a U.S. Senator speaking like JFK before being in JFK's position. But the fact 200,000 people showed up to hear him proves that Europe at least has already crowned him King of Camelot III (II was Bill Clinton). He's more a rock star at this point than a world leader.

For Rajakumar: Star Trek was supposed to be about a cross-cultural Earth of the 23rd century, when humankind had finally gotten over its hangups over race, and Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek's creator) intentionally wanted to push the boundaries of his time (Asian Mr. Sulu and Black Lt. Uhura were ground-breaking in the early 60s); Star Wars was always about "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" with no relation to Earth--it's not that George Lucas purposely avoided minorities in the first Star Wars film (although he responded to the criticism by bringing in Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back). Actually Lucas had thought about casting Toshiro Mifune as Obi-wan Kenobi at first (since it was the Japanese jidai-geki, from where we get the "Jedi" knights, that had inspired Lucas). And if you look closely at the prequel films, there are in fact Asian-looking Jedi knights in the background.

Star Wars without the 20th Century Fox opening fanfare? Now that the prequels have been done to death, isn't it about time to get started on the third trilogy? You know, old man Luke Skywalker in the grandfatherly Obi-Wan role (heck, Mark Hamill could reprise the role now, the way Harrison Ford did with Indy Jones). Since Lucas wants to milk it for all its worth.

There are limits to touch screen technology, as going to any ATM or automated train ticket vending machine in Japan will attest. Something about the traction. I heard that battery life is a weak point. Also, I can imagine people dropping these things easily on the train tracks. Does it come with a strap ring?

Good on you, Jackie, as the Aussies would say. What are those are wooden things they are holding?

Wow, didn't Arnold Schwarzenegger use this technique in "The Terminator"? the sign in Japanese in the background also seems tailor made for this photographic "gag."

"This is a dango. It's a kind of donut. And this is a shibori."

"Oh, a donut. I'll have one of those. The food at the summit hotel was the pits. And, yes, a shibori. Yes, George likes Chevys along with Fords."

Tencho: Lord Vader, this is an unexpected pleasure. We are honored by your presence...

Darth Vader: You may dispense with the pleasantries, Tencho. I'm here to put you back on schedule.

Tencho: I assure you, Lord Vader. My men are working as fast as they can.

Darth Vader: Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.

    Tencho: The Emperor's coming here?

Darth Vader: That is correct, Tencho. And, he is most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.

Tencho: We shall double our efforts.

Darth Vader: I hope so, Tencho, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.

Question: why do Japanese women stand by crossing one leg in front of the other? Is this comfortable?

I see a small market for this book. It represents a lost opportunity, though. Why no mention of the biggest Japanese monster attack of them all, when Godzilla destroyed Tokyo in the 1950s? Or at least the Gargantua Brothers' attack on Gunma. Seriously though, those Yokai seem to have manifested themselves in the real world, with the knife-wielding variety and family killing ones that have come out of woodwork, of late.

This is a very weird "only in Japan" photo. Families go to an event to touch ice while a woman plays the violin. Kudos to the photographer for capturing the inanity of the scene.

Does this mean Ryan O'Connell is out of a job? I rather enjoyed his double entrende "translations" from the wild and wacky tabloids. I thought WaiWai was weird to begin with and playing exclusively to the libidos of male readers out there, but now that it's gone, the site will be deadly dull.

Posted in: What do you think of the Mainichi's decision to cease publishing its WaiWai tabloid tidbits section on its English online site following complaints that it portrays Japanese society in a negative light to the world?

This kind of non-linear, stream-of-consciousness style writing is typical of Japanese essays. There is never a "point" (no pun intended)--just a bunch of random ideas which may or may not have something to do with each other. But I disagree that Akihabara in particular is becoming more "weird"--compared to what? Was it normal before Akiba and Yodobashi Camera were built? What has become weird(er) is Japan itself. Akihabara is no weirder than Nagatacho (sarcasm intended).

They should have had Spielberg and Lucas along with Karen Allen on this show. Why single out Harrison Ford? Of course, then SMAP would have had to start intellectualizing about Kurosawa's "Japanese influence" on the American directors' films. Yeah, I saw Ford being the perfect gentleman that he is. I'm glad that Kimutaku lost again. He seems to has lost a little of his gourmet punch of late, or perhaps the other SMAP chefs have honed their culinary skills.
