Actually, I'm surprised he got life in prison. These kinds of cases usually end in a relatively light sentence. I think given the high profile and international attention, the court probably gave him the stiffest penalty they were allowed under Japanese law. There was no way he was going to get the death penalty.

I think these days everybody has the ability to know a little about almost everything but there is not much depth of knowledge or intellectual curiosity due to Wikipedia and instant answers from googling things. We've lost something along the way...

The lack of a subject in Japanese makes it easy to misinterpret. In English, something needs to be done to something else for anything to make any sense. But in Japanese of course it's not always clear who's doing something to what--ironic when that issue is the most critical in a court of law. The vagueness of Japanese is interesting given the general precision of life in Japan (trains coming on time, more or less, and a general sense of anal retentiveness).

I guess my first impression after picking one up was that I wasn't able to see what's "under the hood". Mind you, I haven't really played around with it yet, so I'm just looking for information and curious if you can indeed see the system and settings, etc. as you can with a regular computer.

Instead of building bridges that go nowhere, the government should be widening the roads and making bike paths throughout the city for easy commuting and recreation. That seems like a no-brainer. The reason why Japanese cyclists are so brainless is that the infrastructure is absent. The environment gives rise to the chaos, naturally.

I have to admit I was almost suckered into buying one of those iPads. It's a poor excuse for a real computer. Where's the real functionality? And the screen display was surprisingly bad. It's all hype. Tell me that I'm missing something.

I think in terms of America's perceptions of Japan, the tide really turned way back in 2005 when "The Last Samurai" came out. It was a Hollywood film that glorified bushido, the way of the warrior. An American movie with that kind of message would have been unthinkable in even the 1980s. A tea ceremony at the Pearl Harbor Memorial is peaceful and more touchy-feely than bushido at least.

This thing about waiting 10 minutes and getting mad is something strange about Japan. People can line up for an hour and half for a bowl of ramen but waiting 10 minutes for a busy emergency relief official can't be tolerated? What's up with that?

Can't wait to take a trip in one of those 787s. Looks like a Dreamliner indeed. Boeing makes good planes. Always have.

That's a huge skeleton of a....predator? Or a scavenger? Paleontologists are divided on the question in regards to T-Rex. I guess when they say "natural postures" he's not upright like Godzilla. That was proven to be physically improbable after computer-based structural analysis.
