I bought the book and so far haven't come to the chapter with the odd-ball theory. It's mostly a history of the CIA's spy plane development and U.S. nuclear testing during the Cold War. It is a level-headed and well written account of what people already know, but the way she re-caps it is engrossing. Most of it is fact-based and she has done her research, which is based on recently declassified documents and interviews.

Nothing defines a national group more than its sense of humor. That's why the Canadians are so great. They gave the world Bill Murray and Mike Myers. So take off, eh?

What's done is done. So maybe there was some confusion in getting accurate information from TEPCO's on-site people. Clearly it was an problem within TEPCO, not the administration. So would the meltdowns not have happened if the water had been turned off? Probably not. But looking back, it's clear the worst-case scenario reported by Edano wasn't even close to what was actually happening at the plant. Reality had already surpassed the "worst-case scenario".
Posted in: Prime Minister Naoto Kan continues to be criticized by members of his own party and the opposition, as well as business groups for his lack of leadership during the current crisis. What more could he have done and what should he be doing? For example, should he be out of the country now, attending the G-8 summit?

Reminds me of the old John Belushi sketch "Samurai Night Fever". The unintelligible Japanese is classic. Satire as a comedic form seems absent in Japan. I may be mistaken, but there has never been a Japanese equivalent of Monty Python, not that it would even be understandable to a non-Japanese audience. Comedy, as we all know, is culture-specific. Hence, the American-British divide in terms of humor: "Huh? I don't get it."

They need to have good writers. Even the American SNL floundered about 75 percent of the time due to bad writing. The golden age of Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray is long gone. Of course, SNL owes a lot to Second City TV, which is true satire.

More plausible is that it was piloted by Amelia Earhart who escaped death and returned to the Land of the Lost via the Sleestacks' time portal. At least she knew how to fly.

Now, at last, a credible theory: NOT. Sounds like a combination of "The Boys From Brazil" and "The Outer Limits". Good imagination, though.

That does sound better than the Queen's state dinner menu featuring "Windsor lamb" whatever that is. Seriously though, the Obamas have been hitting the right notes, though the speech at Parliament rang a bit false. "Europe and the U.S. still leading the world" wouldn't go over well in East Asia, that's for damn sure. Obama tailors to the crowd.

This natural chemistry is interesting. The first meeting was broadcast to the world and we all saw how they all smiled as if it were a family reunion or something. I think the Obamas probably felt they were meeting their own mom (or mum) again.

Tired in Japan. The national pastime. People seem to go out of their way to show how sleepy and tired they are because they want to appear to be "gambaru-ing". That's why every high school student's favorite hobby is "sleeping."

I guess the mayor valued lives above money. The tsunami of 2011 proved that the words of his farewell address were right. That the system worked as it was designed is a testament to the engineers who built it.

Yes, he made the right decision and bully for him. But in Japan (and I guess most places in the world) nobody pats your back you when you do something preventative and nothing happens. But if you do nothing and then something does happen, there is never any shortage of finger pointers.
