"The fishermen who try to block the film crew are presented as rough goons." I'd say the portrayal was accurate. The film crew did nothing but film the Japanese fishermen being themselves. It was not scripted, it was 100% natural so if they appear as goons maybe it's because they were!

How can police say he was unemployed? The guy was a friggin PIMP! I hope he rots in prison for the rest of his life! Hopefully he kept a little black book of clients so the police can at least get those (who aren't police of course) off the streets!

I can't wait for the next story about the cops getting busted for stealing dozens of bags of chips from the local combini!

The 'HOMO SAUSAGE' at the local Lawson is definitely something I wouldn't want in my mouth! Then there was the entertaining young lady wearing a bright red hoodie with 'F..K TOY' in big yellow letters on the back. I just laugh because I'm sure other countries screw up foreign languages in advertising too!

I'm sure the punishment had nothing whatsoever to do with the trains running on time. They're probably being kept up all night scrubbing toilets at the station with a toothbrush and they'll have their pay cut to almost nothing for a month.

Japanese is a NATIONALITY not a race! To call someone "half-Japanese" doesn't make sense. I hate to tell you this but you're the same as the Koreans and Chinese!

Teaching English or any other foreign language in Japan has outgrown it's usefulness! My wife is a junior high school English teacher and none of her students can speak a word; but they'll all pass that part of their HS and university entrance exams! If the education ministry would remove anything to do with English from any and ALL examinations just think how much money could be spent on other things! I've met many of the JETs over the 15 years I've lived here and I agree with KingSaint, they are novelty acts at the local schools (many have told me this is how they feel!) What I find really strange is that I once asked my wife if a school would be interested in having someone my age (40's - with teaching experience) volunteer (i.e. FREE!) to help with English programs. Her response was "No, we pay JETs to help us".

I love this article! I came here in 95 so I guess I fall into the old-timer catagory. My hair is light brown (with natural GRAY highlights)and I don't care on bit! I sport a beard and don't care what Japanese think of facial hair and I've never had anyone comment negatively about it. I don't have any tatoos myself, but I've been to onsens that had so many customers with full body art I thought I was at a Yakuza family reunion! Bottled water isn't cheap, tap water is (although I draw the line at drinking from rivers or lakes!) Have I encountered racism here? Yup! Has it kept me down or sent me home? Nope! Have I ever taught English? Nope! Do I have mixed race children? Yes, two and I love them very much (and their mother too!) Living in Japan is a challenge, truly entertaining, frustrating, and so many other things - but then so is living in any country. At least here I'm not worried about stray bullets!

Well obviousely her feet can reach the pedals and her arms are long enough to push the throttles forward so I'd fly with her! I don't care if the person in the cockpit is a man or woman, as long as they have the skills needed to fly the plane they belong in the job. My congratulations to her for having the fortitude to go after her dream and succeed!

I agree with Yasukuni, it is how the word is said and how it is taken. My children are Japanese-American and if somebody refers to them as half why should I be offended unless they say it in an obviously racist tone? I can't even remember the last time I heard the word, except here on this forum. Most people call my kids by their names and seem to overlook the fact that they look a little different. As for me, I'm not offended if somebody calls me a gaijin with a smile!

I'd have to go with Lady GaGa since she is for sure over the age of 20 and wouldn't land me in prison! These girls are all minors and selling them as sex symbols to old Japanese pervs (which you all know is true!) is disgusting!
