Wonderful idea welcomed my all. The details will be a bit harder. Would the Japanese open their markets to others?

Mutual bows would have been fine. The question is misleading. One sided bow is a problem for a head of state. I stated my views before, and will just write it off as an awkward American. If there is any meaning of being subservient to the emperor in it, it may have been an impeachable offense. But give the man a break and let the Japanese have some fun. The bases stay though:-)peace.

Knews - Good post - something I would do as well. But as a representative of a people I might just not indulge my individual instinct. However, you make a very great point and I hope this is stated in his defense in the American press. Your point really does show the awkward, yet caring American mentality. We really do care and try. I have changed my mind on this event because of your post. Thus the benefit of dialog. My wife says it is still too low but I, as an American, can understand trying to express another cultures ways of politeness. She can as well, awkward as it is. Certainly surprised a few people. I am out of here, enough for this thread. Learned something from 'knews' and will continue my awkward American existence.

DXXJP you have been here too long. Anyway, most all times when a foreign person with political power meets with Emperor Akihito it is with a handshake. All photos I have seen are this way. I cannot find one photo of a bow, certainly not like this one. I think Obama put Emperor Akihito in an awkward position because he for one does not want dignitaries giving tribute to him. Oh well Americans are known to make bloopers. BTW my wife who is Japanese does not feel that any head of state should be bowing to another. Just disrespectful to the people they represent. One thing certain is that Obama will have the favor of the Japanese for some time. This can only be a good thing. I will bet the base issue is hushed up. I hope Obama makes the proper decisions for the betterment of his people and the world, together with others. Enough of this bowing stuff. If he does this with the Chinese fella, I will begin to wonder...

Does anyone know if this is true? "Well bowing to the emperor in Japan is a privilege. It is a tradition which goes back thousands of years. As Westerners, we are excluded from that relationship, unless there is a genuine relationship which has to do with the wider implications of Universal Monarchy, the idea of Chakravartin, or the general idea that the emperor is a direct connection between heaven and earth, as is the intrinsic belief of all Japanese in the Shinto tradition. Some foreignors have that reationship , but they are very few. Its engrained in every Japanese , more or less. It is more than presumptuous of Obama to demonstrate that he has that relationship , with a false wannabe bow. It is in fact insulting to Japan, and to the United States."

Does anyone know if this is true? I guess we just have to wright it off as " he is a Gaijin-san and is trying his best." This is truly what it is and his advisors should be fired.

Hands at side. Straight back. 15 degree angle. Together. I think this is the proper bow for equals. Those who say they are knowledgeable about Japan, what does Obama's bow signify to the Japanese?

"I lived in Japan for 14 years and know a little bit about this subject. Bowing is used as a way of greeting, however how deep of a bow that's used has a lot of meaning. And in this case Obama sent the signal that the Emperor is his superior whether he knows it or not and by extension that Japan is the superior to the U.S. Anyway I think Obama was one confused puppy when he got that handshake instead of the bow he more than likely expected." http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2386153/posts?q=1&;page=51

Obama may have been set up. It is unfortunate because he is a good man. But heads of state in official capacity should not be bowing in this manner to another. It is very disrespectful to that head of state, in this case my poor President. Maybe I am wrong because many other posters kind of like it. Certainly would not have gone well the other way around (Emperor bowing to Obama). Let us wait a bit and maybe Akihito will allow Obama to save face. We shall see.

Obama went in the capacity of the President of the United States of America representing the people of America. Mutual bows would have been most appropriate and even more polite. Manners is not one sided.

There should be another picture of the Akihito bowing to Obama. For me, as an American, this is not what any head of government does. I do not want Hatoyama bowing to Obama. I like Obama but I do not like this. Brings shame on US and especially on those who died in WWII.

Why have this discussion? Think! Who are we? What capabilities do we have? Repect them. Male and Female are meant for each other and children are born. What a wonderful gift in understanding humanity to the fullest, another is born. Quite wonderful. Man needs woman and woman needs man to understand themselves. We are meant for the other. And a child is born. Marvelous.

Can democracy be imposed on another people? It worked in Japan probably because of the honorable nature of the people. But where there are bribes? The highest bidder gets my solders? I do not know, but why stay. I think the point has been made that if you attack the USA those in power will lose it. timorborder - Why are you against leaving Afghanistan? Easy to project power from there in that region? For the Afghans? Opium? Why?

After reading the article I can only think of each human being has a right to the fruits of the Earth. Distribution is an issue. Paying farmers not to grow food is another. People starving and people out of work. Should be a way to help each other for after all is not food production production and therefore could be represented in money to pay the workers? War and injustice could be handled via a strengthen world court with teeth protecting the rights of all. Food is a basic right.

There are also conservative Democrats. The Democrats courted some conservative members of their party to run against Republicans in conservative districts. The result was that more Democrats got seats, but they have some conservative views which support the right to life and the traditional family. The Bishops would have gotten nowhere without them and others of like persuasion. I would also like to add that Obama also does not want Federal dollars supporting abortion birth control. It is my understanding that this has been outlawed for the past 10 years. Gives me hope for the USA.

Sounds healthy to me. Hopefully everyone helps each other out and it does not become a cat house or hen house with people at each others throats. Smart girls who started this and they are doing a real service for society and making money at the same time.
