Utopian ideals have been tried in history with horrible results. Communism, Fascism, unbridled Capitalism are just a few examples. Cuba's central planning does not seem to deliver on the Utopian ideals. Capping an executives pay for no reason except that they make a lot of money serves noone. We need wealth to create wealth as long as the wealth is created honestly. Regulated Capitalism seems to be the best system. Putting the wealth of a country into the hands of a few is a mistake as in the case of Chavez. Food shortages are common because Chavez's government has capped food prices. What do people think will happen if government starts controlling CEO's wages? A shortage of jobs? People need to work to make wealth. Education is extremely important as is freedom to start enterprises that produce wealth. Wealth that is not taken by the government for handouts. Everyone feels better working for a living and there is so much to do. All should contribute to the well being of the human community through work and those that have the ideas to create wealth. More power to them.

It seems as though landowner rights are quite strong in Japan. I just drove my wife to the Eki and I have to stop for telephone poles where there is two way traffic. Some places only had one lane on a two way street. One has to stop because of someone's land buts into the road to allow traffic from the other direction to pass. Eminent domain would have solved the problem in many countries. It is very sad for the pedestrians and bicycles. Maybe before the car the people traveled by foot and carried cargo in the populated areas. Only Samurai had horses? On a positive note, I do see wider roads in new developments. It is evolving. Also some of the architecture is outstanding.

The main highways in Japan are on par with the rest of the world. Many of the country roads certainly could use some engineering, but if one takes their time it is a pleasure to travel in Japan. Beauty of a place is something that grows on you.

WillB "If there is racism, you end it by ending it -- not by turning the tables." Quite right. Once it is seen. When there is money and power it is sometimes difficult. For me, a Latino is someone who speaks Spanish and is from South of the border. Living in a foreign country myself, I have much empathy for them. Ms. Sotomayor has Latino heritage but is an American having been born and raised there.

Teleprompter : Good statement even though it may not apply to Ms. Sotomayor. It may and I hope you are wrong.

DJJapan - Yes, if the ruler is just, all is OK. Money and power go hand in hand. The rule of law is needed to try to make everyone get a fair piece of the pie. The free market is OK as long as it is not like "tiny Tim" in scrooge. Unions came about as a result of the greed of the master. I agree hard work should be rewarded and not robbed by the government. It sounds like you are building a find business and may the wind be always behind you.

There certainly are injustices rationalized by the majority ethic group in any country to maintain there privileged position. (anyone have complaints about the Japanese interaction with other ethnic groups in Japan?) It really is racist with rewards. Perpetuating racism does not make it right even if there are rewards. From what I understand, white Americans need to live in Hawaii for a bit to understand what being a minority is like in USA. They would then understand and perhaps have empathy for something they themselves have experienced. I have to agree with her on this for sometimes we (I am white) do not even see our own cruelty to those who are of different ethnic origins. It is a shame but a true statement that gets her in trouble for even pointing it out.

"65-year-old man arrested after stabbing rampage in Saitama" outhouse... Poor translation but funny the way it was written. When a Japanese becomes agitated and shaking you know something is going to happen. Poor folks. As for thr outhouse, it is like a servant quarters or garden house, my wife says.

"Truth is what you want to believe & a lie is what you don’t want to believe. Now try & prove me wrong & see where it gets you." Well said grafton

Truth is a positive and a lie negative. Works for true things. Like 1+1=2. "It is not true!" This negative statement is a lie by definition making 1+1=2 true... which is true and follows your definitions. Now a lie. 1+1=5. "It is not true!" I do not want to believe it. A lie. Therefore it must be true. However, we know it is not.... see where it got me... confused but fun to think about.

Mittsu - Me - small town USA - Cannot get much safer. 0 tolerance for violence in schools. Yes, issues but addressed right away. Here the training ground is the schools and bullying. No issues but many crimes against the meek. In this situation, it just continued into adulthood. What a trail of crimes this man has which are never counted because the crimes were overlooked, just like in the schools. What price are you willing to pay for harmony? Whose harmony is it? Very superficial and my father-in-law (Japanese) would tell you that.

"See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". How much crime is there really in Japan? How safe is it really? This story is scary for the silence and resignation of the population.

One shot deal. Tension helps US and Japan defend against China using NK as an excuse. Japan and the US had better be able to defend themselves against NK.

Good post cleo. I voted no, however, I do agree with cleo. I think a just wage is a better approach and would help a lot more people. Why go to temps so a business doesn't have to pay health insurance and other benefits which the government has to pick up. The stock holders may like it because they get a greater return. But woe to the bottom of the ladder.

I like a flat percentage tax across the board with the same social benefits for all. temps should not be penalize and should contribute to the social from which they will benefit via givernment subsidies.

I know one parent who gets to take his children once a month. Court has ruled it. It is recent and the foreign parent lives in Japan. Not much but it is different from not allowed to see ones child.

I agree with kirakira25 wholeheartedly. But I wonder what the Japanese are thinking. Harmony? For the child and family that is raising the child? I do think that if the children were of a culture different from Japan (does not speak Japanese well etc) then the foreign parent would get the children. Does anyone have any comments on this situation?

USURY should be outlawed. Japan is fine only because they do not have these credit cards and the, what, 2.5 trillion USD debt that the US consumers have. The Banks receive money from the Taxpayer and then squeeze them with increasing interest rates on credit cards, even on people who pay their debts on time because the banks need money and can raise the interest rate to whatever they darn please (in contract).

I am thankful to Obama and Team for trying to stop these abuses. Should have been from today and limits set on interest rates above prime (which should reflect inflation).

I am curious Airurandojin. What is in that little box that that the trainees bow to? What does it represent? Could one do the sport without bowing to something one may not want to bow to?
