"Spidapig24Nov. 01, 2011 - 12:02PM JST And while we are at it as the international community as a whole (there are a couple of exceptions) dont recognise Japans claim to Senkaku's, China is free to sail in this area too."

That's typical chinese nonsense, The entire world recognizes Japan's sovereignty (not claim, like China's) over the Senkakus and they are included in the sphere of U.S., protection. The PLA Navy don't appear to think it;s worth testing the 7th fleet over this.

At least we don't have thousands of people dying every time something happens.

The article points out what the Japanese themselves call "atarimae". Obviously English proficiency alone without any other business skills is useless., and it's equally obvious that for the 90% of Japanese bliving and working in Japan the ability to speak English is unnecessary. But if Japanese business' intend to grow and expand at best, and continue to exist and be competitive in the global markets at worst, they'd better think a little harder than calling this shift towards English "idiotic". That's as shortsighted a view as I've heard lately, while their Asian businerss competitors move forward.

And in whose waters are they whaling ? Hint: It's not Austrealoias.Or New Zealands.

Why did the Japanese take those books.? They cannot read English let alone Korean

Well it;s unlikely anything from the Joeson Dynasty was written in English. Considering that the dynbasty started in gthe late 1300s it's highly probably that m,osyt of it is written in all Kanji before Hangul. Ancient Japanese texts are also similar so I doubt the scholars would have any difficulty reading them at all.

South Korea is just as guilty of "re-writing" history as Japan. Japanese textbooks talk of how much Japan modernized Korea, which happens to be true. But they leave out the harsh colonial conditions imposed on the populace. South Koreans are always crying about the "comfort womenm" most of whom were Korean,. But they never mention the fact that over 240,000 Koreans served in the Imperial Japanese military and made use of those very same comfort women. Japan says the South Korean governmenht setttled everything in 1965, which is true as no one even Skorea denies that a treaty was concluded,. But South Korea never addresses why the comfort women issue wasn't included baqk then. In fact If I recall there was even an issue within South Korea that the government never passed on many money to the people. My point is that this isn't the simple "Japan is all evil" issue that some people seem think it is.

smithinjapanOct. 16, 2011 - 07:17PM JST Japanese 'alike' are complaining about delays when people are finger printed and it doesn't work well? Sorry, but >that doesn't wash. If you're Japanese you enter the 'pure' line-up automatically while your spouse has to choose >between visitor or foreigner with a registration card.

That's total nonsense smith. My wife with a Japanese passport and I, with a U.S, passport can stand in the same line. And what is this "pure" business? Are you confusing Passport with race?

Can't wait for all the comments criticizing Japan for sending 300 engineering troops overseas when there's so much reconstruction work still needed in Japan after the tsunami. Of course, if Japan had refused the UN request, the same people would be criticizing Japan for not doing enough for other countries,

I don't think this is on the same level as the issue of FGM. Sure she could have found other ways to extract revenge, But no matter how much you discuss it there are going to be very few if any people who will disagree that the guy deserved it,

tmarieOct. 16, 2011 - 08:43AM JST I preferred the old style - no fingerprints and those of us with a visa could join the Japanese line. Was it longer than >now? Sure but I didn't get a mug shot taken nor my fingerprints taken which annoys the hell out of me as they >certainly have them on record. Unlike the folks in Tokyo, we also can't preregister these.

Absolutely agree with you., But I hope you are aware that Japanese and other foreign passport holders go through the exact same photgraph and fingerprinting process when entering the United States.

kurisupisuOct. 16, 2011 - 08:23AM JST @OssanAmerica-the Japanese profile everyone by nationality. Customs require your passport to be shown.

kurisupisu, that's not "profiling" that's inspecting a passort and it's done in every airport in every country on this planet. And that's certainly not what steve was talking about.

    OssanAmerica

I really don't see how you were profiled or harassed steve. Nor do I see what that has to do with this proposed system which appears to be designed to expedite the immigration entry process for both Japanese and non-Japanese passport holders alike, While profiling by authorities in U.S. airports is a known issue, particularly for those who appear middle eastern or muslim, I'm at a slight loss as to how one must appear as to be profiled in an airport in Japan. I also find that ensuring that one changes their underwear on a routine daily basis usually keeps the dogs from sniffing you.

The US government under the clinton administration bought the big fallacy that opening China up econiomically and engaging in trade would raise the living standards of the average Chinese and thereby lead the CCP government to move away from authoritarian control and disregard for human rights as exemplified by the Tianemen Square massacre. Buit nothing could have been further from the truth as China while telling the world that it was a "peaceful rise" has used it's econimic power to increase it's secretive military, declared it's intent to replace the United States as the dominant military power in the region, implement an agenda of expanding it's territorial claims and control over it's neighbor's islands with an aim to control allf Asia. It's about time the world stopped letting China play them for fools.

"Japan should have nothing to do with them and I mean NOTHING!"

Well I'm glad the people running the country are more realistic than you and take national security and defense more seriously. In the last few years JASDF has acquired in air refueling capability for their F-15s. They practiced over Alaskan airspace with the USAF. Can you guess what possible potential targets would require such a capability?

"Not sure why Japan even wants to be in the talks."

Japan wants to be in the talks because it's right next door and a credible securoty concern. All the other 6-party talks mermbers want Japan to be in it because if the ultimate goal of Korean penninsula unification is ever reached it's going to require Japan's economic assistance, probably on a massive scale.
