Have the Europeans all lost their cojones? Don't they realize that this position is exactly what the pirates want to able to continue their activities? No freaking wonder they couldn't do anyhthing about Bosnia by themselves.

Equality at 12:07 PM JST - 21st January Guess you missed "The 40 Year-old Virgin', "Knocked Up", and "Superbad", >three very funny movies. :-)

Yes I did. Saw a lot of movies but didn't see any of those.

Zenpun at 02:38 PM JST - 21st January The original green hornet series were made in black and white. Actually Kato who is kicking chauffeur in the series is a Japanese according the >script. Hollywood asked late Bruce Lee to act as Japanese in the series.

The orginal B&W series goes back to like 1939. Starred Keye Luke as Kato. But your right, Kato was "katou" a young Japanese but the anti-Japanese sentiment and build up to WWII called for blurring that point it seems. The 1966 series that had Bruce Lee was of course in color and that's the one that many of us remember. BTW I just saw this Rogen/Chou Green Hornet (in 3D no less) and it was pretty funny. Silly but funny.

I live in the United States, watch a fair amount of movies. I have no idea who this Rogen is.

Still wondering if I should go see it. Grew up watching Bruce Lee playing Kato so not sure if I'm willing to tarnish my memories.

Shrkb8 at 01:35 PM JST - 20th January Go Sting! Expose the truth and let the Japanese public weigh in.

So you agree with Sting who says; "the best way is by starting a debate, not by forcing foreign opinion." And therefore disagree with the approach taken by O'Barry and Psyhoyos?

AuntyAmerican at 10:11 PM JST - 19th January Constantly playing the 'China is dangerous' card is becoming >embarrassing. China is doing nothing that the USA hasn't already been >involved in for years and continues to do to this day.

No it's not. Chinese military and territorial expansion is a real threat and concern to all of our Asian allies.

China is in danger of becoming the next 'official' enemy of the USA >because it challenges the current American hegemony and vision of US-led >world order.

Wrong. China has been the unspoken enemy of the USA since the communists kicked the KMT off he mainland, right through the Korean War when Chinese troops killed US and other UN troops, and are now bent on military and territorial expansion in Asia. All of China's neighboring Asian countries are turning to he United States to counter balance China's advances.

Wow you really don't have a clue do you? We don't have a crucial relationship that could dictate war or peace with our allies. Nor do we have as many complaints and issues, both economic and strategic about any of our allies as we do with the Communist Chinese Dictatorship.

stevecpfc at 02:28 PM JST - 17th January WhiteHawk; I think you miss teh flaws in your argument. 1; You do not >know you would have been killed.. 2; With stricter gun laws you would not have been in danger in teh first plache

The fundamental flaw in your thinking is that "stricter gun laws" would prevent criminals from procuring and using guns. Criminals don't abide by "gun laws" they buy them from criminals who sell them because their whole intent is for criominal purposes. With "stricter gun laws" as you suggest the victim could have been unarmed, but the criminal would be armed.

MeanRingo at 03:40 AM JST - 17th January Really though, I am sure the Norks are evil, but I still can't blame >them for putting up a stink when it comes to the war games the South and >the US play on their doorstep. It is like me and a buddy holding a sign >out in front of my neighbour's house which reads "We're going to kick >your ass and bang your wife, you wussy!" while simultaneously making >Ride'em Cowboy gestures. I wonder how well people on this board would >take that kind of treatment if it were done to them.

Yes I would probably make similar gestures back at them. But I would't go grab my shotgun and kill them. If NKorea doesn't like the US and SKorea conducting excercises near their border no one is stopping them from doing the same near SKorea's border. It doesn't justify firing artillary on a known inhabited island and killing people, does it?

smithinjapan at 03:18 PM JST - 16th January One mention of the abductees as part of talks while standing beside Lee >and the 'unified face' will be blown apart.

Totally disagree. The North Koreans have abducted an estimated 400 plus South Korean civilians, far far more than any Japanese, and you can bet their survivors aren't going to remain quiet or ignored under the current anti-NKorea mood in South Korea.

Some people feel that NKorea was successful in pulling off their attacks on SKorea as they had correctly calculated that China would not only defend them from any UN actions but any actions by SKOrea and the United States would be seen by China as a threat to themselves. However, only of NKorea's goals has always been to keep SKorea and Japan at odds and in this regard they appear to have completely miscalculated. And more signficantly they seem to have miscalculated to what extent SKOrea would keep putting up with NKorea's continuous provocations.

lovejapan21 at 01:24 PM JST - 13th January If we help the North prosper, it could persuade the people to turn on >its government (for the people of the N would now have something to >lose) Perhaps the north knows this and therefore purposely starves its >people...hmmm

A pleasant thought for sure but ironically it is NKorea's benefactor China that has made it very clear to the world that bringing up the living standards and economy of a dictatorship doesn't bring it any closer to democracy, as the dictatoprship simply tightens it's grip on the people and now with the improved economy becomes an even bigger threat to it;s neighbors. No, I'd say the Kim regime needs to be ousted first before we can help the people of NKorea.

Its not a question of if folks, only when!"

Switch "China" with "America" and your rantings would still be plausible.

No it's quite plausible and "China" is correct. The United States has it's own problems but the above describes China's.

I agree with many posters in that almost all 40 year olds I know would've taken down most of these brats. But of course the victim could have been drunk, especially at that hour, and taken completely off guard. On the other hand maybe incidentrs like this will put an end to the ridiculous habit of Japanese businessmen passed out drunk all over the place including train station stairs at night.

Seiharinokaze at 06:51 PM JST - 11th January OssanAmerica, Which clause of the peace treaty specifies the jurisdiction over the >islands when a problem arises? Which means I presume that China never >accepted any clause that denies China's claim over the islands either.

An unwritten practice has been for decades that Chinese fishing boats enter the waters and they are told by the JCG to get out. Which they do, often ciomming bak after the JCG boat leaves. This "unofficial" relationship has worked without any major problems until this particular Chines capt who was apparently drunk decided to ram the JCG boats.

Violation of territorial waters and trespass onto the islands happened >many times in the past. But never before were those cases put to the >jurisdiction of Japan.

    Exactly.

Ramming the Japanese Maritime Agency's patrol boats may justify >arresting the Chinese captain, but applying the domestic law and indict >him disrupted the customary rules.

What other law are they going to apply? He would have been charged, fined and deported. End of story.

If the district public prosecutors had to decide somewhere along the >line to drop the case and release the captain out of diplomatic >consideration, the government should have settled it through diplomatic >channels from the beginning.

The district presecutors dropped the case obviously because of pressure from the government. Japan folishly expected China to behave in a mature and non-belligerent manner, perhaps requesting Chinese police authorites the right to question the drunk captain and atttend the proceedings. They didn't expect China would act like a hostile two year old.

When the Futenma base issue has been stalemated and the cause to deepen >the alliance is somewhat wavering,

THe US-Japan alliance was never wavering, it isn't based on one USMC air station. IOt was and stioll is an issue, but a far cry from what you make it out to be.

it's as if Maehara pulled strings (or himself is pulled strings) to let >the Maritime Agency's patrol boats provoke the boozy skipper to go >hellbent on a narrow way so that bilateral relations would be brought to >the lowest level in years. I mean he better step aside and mull rather >than dance to the strings between the devil and the lion.

Intersting speculation, but that's all it is; speculation. The biggest problem with that is that there no way the JCG col make a Chinbese fishing boat captain, drunk or otherwise, chase JCG boats from behind and ram them twice. The videos clearly show the Chinese boat could have gone in any direction but chose to target the JCG ships. This idea of "provoking" the chinese fishing boat is sheer nonsense.

It boggles the mind to think that there's even a demand for turtles here in the U.S. that they have to smuggle them in. I'd x-ray all those turtles for hidden drugs.
